M’ADOO PASSES OUT; DRY SOUGHT TO TACKLE SMITH Meredith Booms Baker, Who May Have Presidential Key State (Ohio). Cii United Press WASHINGTON, May 11.—The William G. McAdoo Democratic forces have abandoned work to make the son-in-law of President Wilson the party nominee fpr 1928, and are naming drys to pit against Governor A1 Smith of New York. While McAdoo has not officially withdrawn from the field, lie is convinced, according to friends, that someone else must lead the fight against Smith. Newton D. Baker, secretary of war under Wilson; Senator Thomas .1. Walsh (Dem.) Montana and E. T. Meredith, lowa, are being boomed by the McAdoo men. Baker’s name was suggested by Meredith, an unofficial spokesman for McAdoo. Baker is a dry and comes from a key State, Ohio, the electoral vote of which is necessary for a successful candidate, according to political traditions. He has long been allied with former Governor Cox of Ohio, 1920 Democratic nominee and undoubtedly could get the Ohio delegation with other support from McAdoo in the West and South. Indications are that McAdoo is out of it. The United Press poll of

“The motor industry, directly and indirectly, has been the greatest single producer of new wealth in America for a quarter of a century,” says Harper Leech. The automobile has come to be a symbol of prosperity, not only among individuals, but among the nations of the world, and it is significant that in number of automobiles the United States ranks first. The manufacture of automobiles and the manufacture of fuel to feed them are interdependent industries. Without gasoline the 23,000,000 motor cars and trucks in America would be useless machines. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) has had an important part in the growth of the motor industry and the production of new wealth in this country. By providing gasoline and lubricating oil to supply 1 the needs of the motor the Middle West, it has performed a necessary share of the work of building up the giant motor transportation system which has given jobs to millions —speeded up business —created new wealth —and raised the standards of living. Every day on all the highways of the ten states of the Middle West the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) is helping to make the wheels go round —wheels of business and wheels of pleasure. The business of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) is a fundamental factor in the progress of the Middle West, intimately related, to the lives of its thirty million people. # In carrying on its work of service, the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) is able to pay for and properly utilize a continuously improving standard of labor —providing well-paid jobs for thousands of men and women whose loyal work makes possible the success of the business. Asa result of its able and efficient management, the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) is able to produce new wealth from old, returning reasonable profits on the money invested in the Company’s stock by its 50,000 shareholders, not one of whom owns as much as 5)4% of the total. In addition to increasing the prosperity of millions of individuals in the Middle West, the Standard Oii Company (Indiana) adds much to the wealth of the government, federal, state and municipal, through the taxes it pays. The motor cars that throng the highways of the Middle West are symbols of new wealth. The torch of service and the Red Crown discs that dot those highways are signs of the new prosperity which the Standard Oil Compariy (Indiana) has helped to create.
