RUTH STRICKEN BY FIT IN CELL (Continued From Page 1) Gray, guilty of murder in the first degree." , „ Thi jurors made it clear that all were of the same mind and none had been fo'ced to concede a point. “Jure-.*. look upon the defendants; defendants, look upon the Jurors,” droned -he court clerk. Mrs. .Snyder was tremblir.2 as she arose. Gray was erect, his face a mask. Gray_S(oical The l'oieman’s voice faltered and the last words could not be heard in the rear of the great courtroom. The indict, meaning death, was at hand. Newspaper men made a break for the rloor. „ Mrs. Snyder crumpled. Her head sank on the counsel table and she cried. Gray was stoical. And then,' upon request of Edgar Hazleton, counsel for Mrs. Snyder, the jury was polled. Mrs. Snyder hid her eyes. Gray drew from his pocket tattered copy of the gospel. He read one page and then glanced toward the ceiling. His lips moved as though at prayer. Sentence Monday Hazleton asked for time to prepare motions. Judge Scudder frowned. “The court sees no reason why the sentence should not be imposed now,” he said. But Miller Joined Hazleton in protest and the court consented to postponement until Monday. Mrs. Snyder then was brought before the railing in front of the bench to give her pedigree, which will be placed upon the warrant of death. The matron supported her as in an almost inaudible voice she made the statements the court holds necessary. Gray looked healthier and one would be tempted to say happier than when he first went to trial. It was with firm step that he left the courtroom that had been the scene of his ordeal. Mrs. Snyder’s Collapse “A fair and just verdict," said District Attorney Newcombe. "Disuppoititing. An appeal will be made," said Hazelton. “An /appeal is probable,” said Miller. Then came rumor. “Mrs. Snyder lias committed sul.cide,” someone told someone else. Soon a crowd of 1,000 persons assembled at the jail entrance. The rumor gained force when Drs. De Rose and Berwick of St. Johns Hospital arrived and made their way to the woman's cell.

NO TRACE FOUND OF FRENCH PLANE (Continued From Page 1) do their utmost to find Nungesser and Coll. Forty-two hours was the maximum the fltnrs could have remained aloft in their effort to fly from Paris to New York. Paris was a city disillusioned after a delirious afternoon of celebration yesterday when erroneous reports that Nungesser and Coll had arrived in the United States were circulated by newspapers, booming guns and airplane flares. While the city waited today for more news, Lieutenant Coudert of the French army announced ho would begin preparations for a flight to South America, Via Africa, in a piano similar to that used by Nungesser and Coli, ns soon as he received definite word of the result of their flight. Out of Gasoline The biplane White Bird, in which the aviators set out from Le Hourget air field, Paris, at 5;19 a. m. Sunday, Paris time, must have run out of gasoline yesterday afternoon, if some other contingency had not forced her to alight long before. Plans went forward all along the northern coast today to sene’, out rescue siups and airplanes *o search the Atlantic. The steamer West Apaun, nheut one thousand miles out of New York, reported today that the weather, which was bad yesterday, hud cleared up today. The West Apaun was keeping a sharp lookout for the planes ns was the Cunaul liner Cameroniu, nhich sailed from New York Saturday. Three Navy airplanes were to leave Squantum air base, Massachusetts, to seek traces of (lie plane, and two Navy trips from Boston set out cn the search. Appeal to Siiips The Independent Wireless Company broadcast to tho captains of all ships at sea with which it was in touch to be on the lookout. It was expected that by noon h I score of airplanes and as many ships j would lie actively searching for tho | missing men. ! The White Bird was built with a I watertight cabin, oajiable of floating for forty hours, and in addition Nungesser and Goli had life preservers and floating parachutes. They were equipped with concentrated food pills to last for several days, and the plane had a distilling apparatus which would keep them supplied with drinking water ns long ns the craft floated. But the Jinx that has followed Rene Fonck and Noel Davis and Richard Byrd, sieading death and injury among those who tried or planned to try the flight Isctween New York nnd Taris, has, in some fashion, worked again and that great stretch of land and water rci mains uriconquercd.
TWISTERS SNUFF , ■ OUT 200 LIS v (Continued From Page 1) high wind areas, were reported. F.eports from areas now cut off from communication were expected to increase the death toll. Estimates of? 50 injured and more than a million dollars damage was I “very conservative,” the Red Cross at Little Rock, Ark., said today. Again Heads List Flood-racked and torn hy windstorms earlier tills spring, Arkansas again heads the list of tragedyaffected States. More than a dozen small towns were affected hy tho series of windstorms yesterday. Strong and Norphelt, oil villages near Eldorado were almost destroyed when the wind struck last, night, taking a toll of seventeen lives, tearing down oil derricks, homes and business houses nnd injuring nearly 50 per cent of the residents. It was a night of horror in Poplar Bluff after the storm. Cries of injured imprisoned in the debris guided rescue workers. The community was stunned. Thirty-nine of the injured were children, caught by the collapse of a school. INDIANA STORM SHIFTS Result of Mid-West Disttirhanres; A Quiet Forecast. " Thunderstorms over Indiana Monday night and brisk winds today were results of the storms which took a heavy toll of life in the Middle West, reports J. H. Armington, United States weather-bureau head. The storm center has shifted to northern lowa, Armington said. The local storms, which brought a .81 inch ralnfall'here Monday night, and heavy rains over the State, were paused hy winds circling around the storm center. It is not likely that tornados which did heavy damage in other States, will develop in Indiana, he said. Violent winds caused heavy damage in northern Indiana, that section of the State having felt the storm more seriously than any other part. At Osceola, six miles west of Elkhart, -the windstorm caused damage estimated at above $73,000. Telephone and telegraph poles were torn down and buildings were damaged. Charles Lazeing, of Goshen, was injured and removed to Mishawaka Hospital, his skull fractured. It was the second storm that struck St. Joseph County Monday. In the Calumet district, much damage was done. Buildings were the vicinity of Hammond, while at Lowell the roof of the new $250,000 high school building was wrecked. Porter County, near Valparaiso, also suffered considerable property loss. Many trees were uprooted and wires levelled In Laporte. Attack Old Blue Law. Bu I nited Press PITTSBURGH, Pa., May 10.— Pittsburgh’s symphony society, whose Sunday night concert for members only, resulted in arrest of nine of Jts officers, will take the fight against the blue laws of 1794 to court.
