FRANC RISE HITS PLEASURE TRADE STAGGERING BLOW French Resort Keepers Face to Face With Bankruptcy. Bu United Pram PARIS, May 9. —There Is gloom In Montmartre. The proprietors of the all-night resorts are aghast and are considering putting up an immense sign stretching from the rue Fontaine across the rue Pigalle and right up to the Church of the Sacred Heart with the legend: “Closed on account of bankruptcy." It’s all because of the franc. As the national currency goes up and up in value the patriotic owners of the pleasure palaces feel their hearts drooping lower and. lower. The foreign element, without which the cases couldn’t exist, is going off to other climes where a pound sterling or a dollar can still purchase what their possessors have been accustomed to for more than a year. Costly As Circus “I don’t enre whether you believe it or not, a place like mine costs as much as a circus,’’ one case owner said, “I have to have two orchestras. I’ve got to pay author's rights on the songs and music. I have higher taxes than a movie show. I pay 5,000 francs a night to a girl what gets only l,0ij)0 nt the theater where she play before mid-night. Why all that costs me more than my lights and my linen bill —without talking of the other overhead.” Drinks Come High The Americans and English who didn’t care at all when they had to pay twenty francs a drink at the bar when that meant only forty cents or two shillings think twice about it when a round of drinks costs more than a night club in New York or London. Two hundred francs for champagne two or three months ago represented an expenditure of fouit, dollars, or less than a pound. Now it represents almost double that figure. No wonder the night resorts are empty and their owners dismal. ROYAL PARTIES MORE INFORMAL Queen Mary of England Causes Change. Bu United Press • LONDON, May 9.—Queen Mary is following the lead the Prince of Wales has given by going Democratic. Wlille Wales visits slums, the queen has democratized her tea. parties. They are not exactly on! the free-and-easy plane of the church social as yet, but at least some of the formality has been removed. Heretofore, Buckingham Palace tea parties have been really royal affairs, at which the king and queen formally received their guests—the queen hatted—and at which the hundreds of guests stood stiffly about and stared at each other. But at later parties the queen intimated that the guests would ba expected merely to attend and enjoy themselves. They were surprised to see her bareheaded, and she circulated among the guests chatting to them. A buffet*tea was served. Society reporters describe the affair as “simple, homely and happy in its graceful hospitality and kindliness of welcome.”
BROOD MYSTERY SOLVED; BELIEF Dickens Intended Death of Character in Book. Bu United Press LONDON, May 9. —The myste.-y of Edwin Drood, that has perplexed Dickens lovers for years, is believed to have finally been solved with thei death of Sir Luke Fildes, disl tinguished painter. Dickens died while he was writing the book, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood." Detectives, literary men and school debating societies have tried to complete the story ever since Dickens's death in 1870. It was announced after Filde’s death that Dickens had confided to him—the illustrater of the book—that Edwin Drood was ( to be strangled, with a necktie, by the character, Jasper. Fildes, it is said, was visiting Dickens and showed him a picture of Jasper ivearing a little black necktie. Dickens insisted that it must be a large one. .Asked why, he Inquired in turn. “Can you keep a secret?" “Yes.” replied Fildes. “Well, Jasper must strangle Drood with it,’*Dickens replied.
