BOARD WARS ON RIVER POLLUIION Indiana Health Body Drives to Clean Streams. Health department plane to eliminate atream pollution In Indiana were announced today by L. S. Finch, chief engineer, upon return from conference of public health engineers of the Ohio River basin at Columbus, Ohio. A program for cleaning all streams that run Into the Ohio was outlined. Chief topic of discussion, Finch said, was elimination of Industrial wastes from by-product coke ovens, known as phenol. This waste Is of such character that a medicinal taste Is given to the water, he said. In Indiana It Is found mostly in the Calumet region. Manufacturers are cooperating with health authorities to overcome the difficulty, by operation of a quenching system for cooling coke upon a closed-system basis and thus keep streams from being phenolladen. The health board plans to Introduce this system in all Indiana refineries. In southern Indiana greatest pollution Is dairy and canners' waste and efforts are also being made to eliminate this by incineration and other methods.
