GRAY KILLED FOB 136,000, CHARGE (Continued From Page 1) for the attorneys who sought to penetrate through her cold mask. Soon after court opened Mrs. Snyder, resuming her testimony, was turned over to Gray's attorneys for questioning. Immediately she was in the unusual position of defending herself against the attacks of a co-defendant Thought of Disgrace Gray’s attorneys lost no time in striking at the very heart of her case. They drew from her a declaration that she did not wish to have her husband killed, but at the same time she knew that Gray was plotting murder and did not warn Snyder because site "she feared disgrace.” Suddenly she was asked why it was that Gray wanted Snyder killed. "To get his insurance money,” was her answer. "And how would he get it? Tt wasn’t payable to him?” Gray’s counsel shot back, and Mrs. “Snyder seemed trapped. Cleverly Answers But with remarkable cleverness she parried: "He could have gotten the ntonby out of me just as he got other money from me.” Mrs. Snyder was composed and answered questions with a show of spirit until questioning led her to picture the scene when she said she first saw that her hdsband was dead. Then she broke down and wept. A matron stepped up with smelling salts and after a few minutes she was able to continue. Edgar A. Hazelton, counsel for Mrs. Snyder, concluded direct examination of his client shortly after opening of court. The testimony follotvs: “Now, Mrs. Brown—l mean Mrs. Snyder, when you signed your confession had you been told Gray had confessed?” "Yes," said the witness. Mrs. Snyder then repeated a conversation she had had with a neighbor relating to a man—presumably Gray—who bad been seen “prowling” around the Synder home a few nights before the murder. As though to show that Mrs. Snyder in November, bad not contemplated the breaking tip in her home. Hazleton drew front the wit ness n story of having ordered shrub bery then to be delivered in May. The lawyer skipped from point to point in his brief questioning. Mrs. Snyder said Gray had asked her to buy stock in his concern, but that she had refused. Hazleton then said: "Mr. Millard, the witness is yours." William Millard of counsel for Gray then arose. "Mrs. Snyder,” he began In portentous v -tone.', ‘‘Why did you leave a~ bottle of whisky under the pillow of your mother's room the night of the murder?” “Because he asked me to in a letter he wrote me." "Hid you know Judd Gray was giving you a sashweight when h" handed you a package early in March?" asked Millard. "No." “When you and found the sashweight, what did you do?” / Hid Sashweight
“I put it down in the cellar.” “Why?” ‘‘l wanted to hide it until I could give it back to him.” “Did you give it back to him?” “yes.” “When did you see him again?” “On the morning of March 20.” ,“Did you have any conversatio * with him then?” Mrs. Snyder then repeated liestory of having told Gray that she would not permit him to go through with the planned killing. “Did Gray tell you he was going to do away with your husband?” “Yes.” • “Did you tell your husband?” “Xo.” "Why not?” “Why, because I thought I could dissuade •fudd Gray and was afraid of disgrace.” “Still, you never warned y6ui- husband at any time through the evening. when you were at a party?” “No.” Legal Notices .1. "Did you want him (o get drunk that night?” "No.” “Did you want Judd Gray to get drunk?” “No.” “Now, Mrs. Snyder why did you leave the door open in your house, so that Judd Gray could get In?" Relied on Persuasion “Because 1 still thought that I could argue Judd Gray out of this business if I settled down to a long talk with him.” “Do you know of any reason,” Millard asked slowly, “why Judd Gray would want to kill your husband?” “Yes,*’ said thfe witness, without a moment’s hesitation, “so as to get the insurance.” "But was he the beneficiary of policies totaling $06,000'.’” * "No.” “Who was?” “I was.”
