TRIBUTES FOR A STATESMAN (Continued From Page 1) popularly as a conservative in political thought, he was in fact an ultraconservative when any proposal involved departure from fundamental principles. He believed in progress under our established forms of government. ' DR. J. AMBROSE DUNKLE, pastor Tabernacle Presbyterian Church —Mr. Beveridge was one of the greatest men America has ever produced. I consider him among the outstanding, if not the outstanding Hoosier. It is with deep regret that I hear of his death. I am a great admirer of Mr. Beveridge. DR. F. S. C. WICKS, pastor of All Souls Unitarian Church—With the shock that comes with the news of his death there passes all partisan feeling and I join with all good Americans in lamenting the untimely death of Albert J. Beveridge. I knew him as a friend and as a neighbor and admired him as a man of exceptional talent. He was responsive to progressive ideas and ardent in giving them bis championship. To his native talent he added patent industry. • His public addresses were compliments to the understanding of his hearer, for lie always gave to them careful preparation. His monument will lie his “Life of Marshall," a permanent contribution to American biography. MRS. ALLEN T. FLEMING, president Women’s Legislative Forum—Senator Albert Beveridge is the greatest statesman Indiana has ever produced. He was honest and just, patriotic and courageous. In his death the women of Indiana have suffered an irreparable loss as he was their stanch supporter in all legislation of interest to them. Men and women who have loved and honored him will carry on for their country with his memory as an inspiration. FEDERAL JUDGE ROBERT C. BALTZELL—The sudden death of Albert J. Beveridge is a shock to a host of friends and admirers throughout the entire Nation, as well as it was to those of us’ who reside In Indiana. He was an outstanding character in America, both as a public servant and author. His work, the “Life of John Marshall,” gave him an enviable place among the foiemost writers of the age. MRS. W. W. THORNTON, President Woman’s Department Club— Although I have had no personal acquaintance with Senator Albert Beveridge, 1 have always greatly admired him as a citizen of unique qualifications. Even without his great statesmanship, his historical research would have made him a nationally important figure. A distinct loss to all Indiana citizms, his death will be widely mourned. ALBERT STUMP, attorney—A very great and courageous man has been lost to the Nation. Indiana admired him not only as a statesman who was always true to his convictions but as a man of unique and splendid literary achievements. To me. he has always been an inspirinK figure. With all our citizens, I mourn his loss.
EVANS WOOLLEN, president of Fletcher Savings and Trust Company—Having known Senator Beveridge from our boyhood I testify with affectionate regard to his uncommon qualities of mind and heart. He iva.s unmistakably one of the <no few in the national life or' our generation of whom the word “statesman” could be used aceiirately. lie much enriched the life of Indiana and the nation and we shall be poorer without him. hope, indeed the expectation, that a life of Lincoln would be added to the nation's treasures aa monumental as his life of Marshall. MAYOR JOHN ,L. DUVALL—lndiana has today lost one of its greatest men. Especially was he a great literary light and oustanding thinker. The Nation suffers a tremendous loss in that his life of Lincoln was not finished. I am deeply grieved to hear of his death. WILLIAM A. PICKENS, president. Indiana State Bar Association: "I was always a great admirer of Mr. Beveridge. Soon after I came to Indianapolis I came in contact with him. 1-Ie was on the opposite side of a lawsuit, in which I was engaged. He showed such preparation and such ability in that case that I have always had the greatest respect for him as a lawyer. I have always greatly admired his ability as a writer and regard his “Life of Marshall" as the greatest biographical work that has been produced in America. Literature, high-grade politics and statesmanship in America have all suffered a serious loss in his death. M. BERT THURMAN. United State Internal Revenue collector — The sudden and unexpected death of Albert Beveridge will be mourned by every native Hoosier. He was one of Indiana’s most widely kown citizens. He was a distinguished statesman and author. MRS. ARTHUR R. ROBINSON, Wife of Senator A. R. Robinson — The death of Albert Beveridge is a shock not only to the people of our ' State but to the Nation as well, for in his passing we lose one of our most outstanding and distinguished citizens. He made a distinct place for himself, not only as a great statesman but as a figure In the literary world . In botli fields of activity his loss will be most Keenly felt. POSTMASTER GENERAL HARRY S. NEW —Indiana has lost one of her ablest citizens and one who has brought the State great distinction. He was a most unusual man, with an exceptional—even extraordinary —mind. No one will question his ability, which was equaled only by his capacity for work and the enorgy with which he undertook the things in which he was interested. FORMER SENATOR THOMAS J. TAGGART, informed at French Lick by The Times of the death of ex-Senator Beveridge said—lndiana will miss him. He was an Intellectual man. a great scholar, an outstanding statesman and citizen. I knew him well and loved him. The news of his death comes as a great shock. GOVERNOR ED JACKSON—It is a very great shock to me. The State of Indiana has lost one of its ablest citizens. It is a double calamity, because Mr. Beveridge was working upon a life of Lincoln, to which we were all looking forward with such great expectations. MRS. GRACE URBAHNS, State Treasurer—ln the passing of Mr. Beveridge our State and Nation has lost one of its most illustrious sons. Mr. Beveridge possessed a master] niind and his influence and memory shall live forever in the many literary and historical treasures that have fallen from his pen.
FORMER MAYOR SAMUEL LEW IS SHANK—I have known Senator Beveridge for more than twenty years and believe that if the Republican party had seen fit. to nominate hint for the presidency •that he would have made one of the greatest Presidents this country has ever had. T do not think that the United States has had a man better posted on international law than Mr. Beveridge. CIRCUIT JUDGE HARRY O. i HAMBFjRLIN—The three fundamental requisites underlying real statesmanship are ability, integrity and courage. These qualifications, to an outstanding degree, marked the whole public career of Albert J. Beveridge, as can be claimed for few other men In national life. And most prominent of all was his courage. Complete • fearlessness was the compelling factor that endeared him to the common people of fortyeight States of the Union. His life in office, and out of it was equally public, for in private life he was a national figure. JUDGE JAMES A. COLLINS, Criminal Court—The death of Albert J. Beveridge, so sudden and unexpected, comes as a great shock to his friends. Beveridge was admired and loved by many men who did not always ngrec with him nolitically. They admired him because of his courageous stand on public questions and the able and fearless presentation of his views of the cause that he espoused. His career in the United States Senate brought him national fame and made him easily one of the outstanding public men of America. When he retired from the United States Senate, it was freely predicted that his political career was at an end, but this proved a false prophecy, because when he went before the people in 1922, he overwhelmingly defeated Senator Harry S. New, for the nomination of the United States Senate. The remarkable achievements of that campaign were due largely to the background of national fame that came to him through his wmnderful contribution to literature in his “Life of John Marshall.” Beveridge will long be remembered after the political fights of his generation have faded away, for his contributions to literature. His sudden death is a great tragedy! His “Lincoln” is unfinished. We who knew him, looked forward to this second great contribution from his pen.
