Women Should Not Cheat Men If They Prefer Business Career, Says Martha Lee—She Who Plays Unfairly in Game of Matrimony Is a Poor Sport. By Martha Lee Ihe woman who does not play the game of marriage fairly is a poor sport, to say the least, “If a woman does not want to care for a home or to have children, she should not cheat a man by marrying him, but devote herself to the things she does love.” This was the conclusion reached at a discussion on the subject: “Woman’s Work Outside and in the Home.”

A little severe sounding—that conclusion, but certainly most balanced. With opportunities opening and widening for her as never before, the woman of talents and energy is tempted to feel that out-ln-tlie-world activities are of extraordinary importance. Perhaps they are, but any one who has voluntarily taken up the duties of wife and mother should neglect them for nothing else in the world and should have clear enough perspective to know that home and children won't wait. Such a few years and the four walls of home that seemed to hold such an unending round of the "same old duties” won’t need much of mother’s care any more, for grubby little Jimmy-boy will grow up and go away and Betty will marry and Jean will go away to college. The children won’t wait, but clubs and committees and all outside work will doubtless be clamoring as hard as ever. Those we have always us. Was Building Trade Dear Martha Lee: I get so out of heart sometimes X don’t know what to do. I was married just when I was getting into real success. I owned a beauty parlor and was building up a wonderful trade. I had more money to spend in a week then than I have in six months now. for I married a poor boy and I had two children in three years. Sometimes I meet some of the former operators and they have beautiful clothes and talk of wonderful times. All I do is wash or mend baby clothes and cook and wash dishes. BITTER. Don’t be deceived by the “wonderful times” the other young women have. Those affairs and their beautiful clothes aren’t the most satisfying things on earth and what or the future? If you’re a good mother, you’re laying up treasures of love in baby hearts and you’re giving inspiration to the man you call husband. That’s mighty worth-while and don’t you doubt it.

By Mrs. Walter Ferguson One of the most delicious bits of news that has ever come out of Washington Is the announcement that the essential qualification for successful candidates for positions in the newly created bureau of prohibition, Is a spotless life. There is some sense to this. The men and women who set themselves to reform the rest of us ought to be able to show that they are actually as good as they claim to be. This thing of having reformed beer hounds prying into our cellars is getting tiresome. Finger prints are to be made of all persons aspiring to labor at this great work, so that no man can hope to enter the noble calling without presenting a clean record to the world. But is this enough, merely to know that a man has never been convicted or arrested for crime or misdemeanor? Surely not. Wo know full well that the thirst for liquor is a vile and insidious thing, and that when oncs a man has indulged he is as likely as not to do so again. Suppose the temptation should overcome him after he had been entrusted with important work in the prohibition cause? How terrible to known that these spotless folk who hunt down our flasks might

Let reformers set us the proper example. Let them forego intoxicating beverages, smoking, card playing, Sunday baseball, wicked movies, all things indeed that pertain to the world, the flesh and the devil. We want no adulterers, no usurers, no winebibbers, no liars to save us. Only the best is fit for the noble work which is planned by the Anti-Saloon League. We feel therefore that the Civil Service Commission is consistent when it says that no man not worthy shall be permitted to sit in the sacred places of the Prohibition Bureau. Only one thing we fear. Where shall we go to get the proper persons for these noble tasks? The men with lilly white morals, so far as we can ascertain are all dead.
