FATHERS DO NOT WANT TO BE HUMAN CASH REGISTERS
Martha Lee Pays Tribute to Husbands Who Plan and Outsmart the Business World to Obtain Advan- ‘ tages for Their Children. By Martha Lee Don't take father as a matter of course. Sure it’s his “duty” to provide bread and butter and shoes and school books—
Certainly It’s up to him to see that college educations are anticipated; that pianos, autos —the thousand and one things that “mother” and the children want, are somehow brought Into concreteness, but— He’s not a human cash register and hates —no matter if he never gives anyone cause to suspect It—to be treated as the machine which merely rings “cash” when approached for that useful commodity. The children themselves rarely see this. They are ruthless young things in their demands and blithely pitiless in the sacrifices they exact. But the average father and husband is a brave soldier of life. He toils and plans and “out smarts” in the business world that the good things of life should come to his children, his home. Precious “beyond the price of rubies” to him is the wife who understands this; who doesn’t consider him just her children’s father, or array herself with them as a sort of corporation to “get things” from father. Her Money Supply Only Martha bee: I am a mother-in-and this statement may right away make you think I’m prejudiced. When I tell you that I never mention to anyone what I ara telling you. you can know I do not obtrude myself into the family life of my oldest son. He has been married 14 years, has a smart, pretty wife and three lino children —two daughters and a n. g wife has years ago forgotten that he is anything but the source of her money supply: and it is distressing to see that she has so influenced the children that when they see him. they think only of eomething they want to do or want to **Yt makes my heart ache to realize < although we never mention the subject) that hs knows this. His wife is now planning a summer trip (with the children and without him of course) that will take far more than he can afford. He, has in fact, tsked me if 1 can lend him money in une and I know what it is for. but don t :t on. What do you think of this? ONLY A MOTHER-IN-LAW. There is really nothing that you |an do, although I can imagine how hard it is to keep still. Any comments on your part would be considered in the wrong light by her, that’s practically certain. To talk with your son would make things harder for him, hurting his pride that others see and know how lightly his family regards him. About all you can do, is to make him realize that his mother’s love and admiration are always his. Even this, you'll have to do tactfully and without inciting her, but it will be of value to him, be sure of that. Friend Influencing Him Bear Martha Lee: I have been going Steadily with a fellow for two months uid X care a great deal for him. He lias told me he ioves me and lie has said that the reason is that I am different from the girls he had previously gone with. However, a friend of his, who goes with afast crowd lias recently come to town under his influence, m.v friend is getinto a fast company again. Shall I him or what? I don’t drink or smoke

am somewhat, reserved. but considered pretty. M. E. If you like him very much, don’t drop him but at the same time don’t give all your thought to him. Have engagements with others, but be your own natural self that he previously liked when you are with him. He’s more than likely to again conclude that the other kimi of persons do not hold his admiration. Threatens to Meet Him Dear Martha Lee: I have a daughter 17 who never goes with any boys. Since she went to work six months ago. she lias met someone she seems to gTeatly care for. She cries herself to sleep at night because her father will not allow this young man to call at her home. She threatens to meet him out. I went with her father when I was 17 and I hate to see her treated this way. A MOTHER IN SUSPENSE. I would certainly have a heart-to-heart talk with her father. While it is true that she is young to have company, it is a thousand times better that she do so under her own roof than if she is driven to underhand methods of eonduct. Try and help your husband to see this. Could She Forget His Past? Dear Martha Lee: Several months ago I met a man five years older than I who has wonderful ways and means to do right I think, but he was in some trouble some years ago and there is a littlo boy who bears his name, but without legal right. He savs that he was not its father. This young man wants me to marry him. I love him and feel like I could forget and forgive but then again this comes to me as something I can't forget. Please help me. SUE. If this man is not to blame for the past wrong, or if he was and has made all the restitution that he can, you could surely forgive him for a sin of his youth. However, if circumstances and apparent facts make it plain that his duty lies in the other direction, it would indeed be a shadow between you, if you married him. MacDONALD TO SPEAK Ft. WRINKLES ARE YOUR BADGE OF CHARACTER You Can’t Go to Your Grave Without Them Unless, Like Good, You Die Young, Says Mrs. Ferguson.
By Mrs. Walter Ferguson A salesman at the door. A marvelous cream guaranteed to take every wrinkle out of the facei to build up sagging neck muscles, to eliminate the double chin, to restore the bloom of youth. No doubt will sell worlds of it. Women shy at wrinkles like an old-fashioned horse once shied at the chugging motor car. And yet wrinkles are honorable things. That woman who has reached forty years and bears on her face no marks of them must be a poor dead sort of soul. She must possess

Silence. Electrolux Servel is the only automatic refrigerator that is not a machine. It has no motor, compressor, fan or other machinery. Hence there is no noise or vibration. Just a quietly burning gas flame. Life. As the refrigerating system contains no moving parts, there is no wear and tear. No replacements, no adjustments. By doing away with all machinery, Electrolux Servel can be made more economically than any other automatic refrigerator of equal capacity. And the first cost is the last, as no maintenance is required. Operating Cost. The cost of operating Electrolux Servel is remarkably low. You will be surprised for how little you can have not only the preservation of all your food but also the freezing of desserts, the chilling of cold entrees and appetizers, the cooling of beverages. If you are considering automatic refrigeration, see this remarkable new device first. It is now in operation in our showrooms. Let us explain how it works. a weak and ineffectual mind to have gone through summers and winters through sickness and sorrow and worry and care, and come out with a perfect complexion. Wrinkles of anger, that draw down the mouth into lines bespeaking a bad disposition, that creep about the eyes because we have allowed ourselves to become carping and malicious and mean, are the ones we should' strive to ri<J ourselves of. And no face cream on earth can do it without some spiritual assistance from within. But wrinkles that have been put
upon the face by happy laughter, by loving anxiety for others, by work in a worthy cause these are only our scars of battle and should not be completely scorned. For wrinkles are your badge of character. You can’t hope to go to the grave without them unless, like the good, you die young. Sometimes, too, one wonders whether many women don’t acquire more wrinkles worrying about the ones they ulready have than in any other way. For we labor, oh, so ceaselessly, to keep ourselves young and we long so ardently to remain with unlined cheeks that we grow stooped and withered by erason of the sheer hard work of it all. Why not forget wrinkles for awhile and put your thoughts on some of the noble things that often bring them? For ’tis not important that we live so easily that no lines be etched upon our faces. The years are inexorable and pass over us all
alike. Though your face he young as sixteen and your heart be freighted with th knowledge of thirty-five, think you in some subtle way the truth will not be known? Better honorable wrinkles than a lifetime spent in putting on face creams. CHURCH SESSION ENDS Disciples' of Christ Educational Board Concludes Program.
