SYNOPSIS JOYCE DARING is left homeless by the separation of her parents, she 'Curbs as a telephone operator at a hotel. Her mother disappears and her father, penitent, searches for her. Through CARTER DELAND, Joyce isintrodueed into society and makes an enemy of CATHERINE SHERWIN, who is jealous of Deland’s attentions. /Delano proposes a life of luxury and ease to Joyce, who refuses angrily. HENRY DEACON, who is In love with Joyce, is eng.-iged in untangling his father's business, and his little time to give her. She is befriended by MRS. HALTBY, a wealthy widow for whom she did a sre5 re at service, and upon Mrs. Malthy’s path comes into a fortune. This she agrees to keep secret, at the request of JUDGE PERKINS, the Malth.v family lawyer. Joyce continues her interest in a reading circle, of which MRS. FITZSIMONS is patroness. Carter Deland returns from Bermuda and plans to trap Joyce at a house party for which j Mrs. Fitzsimons is hostess. Deacon goes east on business. Deland tell JIM HOPKINS, detective, he believes BUTCH SELZER, bootlegger and burglar, who had tried to capture Joyce was trailing him. Joyce accepts the invitation to the Anvil Club party, but Carter purposely drives her to the wrong place. She waits patiently for the other guests and not Until it is late and she has unpacked her clothes does he tell her they are not at the Anvil Club. CHAPTER XLIV The Rescue A group of gaily dressed girls and sport togged men stood chatting on the wide porch of the Anvil Club. Through the drawn curtains of the club lobby could be seen the glow of a log fire, which occasionally gleamed on copper kettles and other tea paraphernalia standing cosily on small tables. “Feel like a walk, Nelly?” Reggie Forbes asked Helen Powers. “In a minute, honey. I want to see Fitz first." Mrs. Fitz-Slmons came billowing out of the doorway, followed by Matilda Truesdale and Catherine Sherwln. “We’re worried about Carter and Joyce,” Mrs. Fitz-Simons said. "Carter left the hotel to get Joyce before we started. They ought to have been here first.” “Tire trouble probably,” said RegBje carelessly. "Or heart trouble,” suggested one of the girls with a giggle. “What do you bet they don’t show up at all?” asked Catherine, a note malice creeping Into her voice. The girls in the group, most of whom genuinely liked Joyce, stirred uneasily. Joyce was being silly, they felt, to delay her appearance this way, but why worry about it. After some desultQvv chatter they scattered for a walk in the new spring air before time to dress for dinner. Mrs. Fitz-Simons sent Mattie for a warm wrap, watching her young people with Indulgent eyes. She, too, was wishing Carter and Joyce would appear. Their absence made the party incomplete and Mrs. FitzSimons had a passion for perfect entertaining. She watched a long low car turn into the driveway. “Perhaps their car broke down and this is someone bringing them in,” she thought. But there was only one person in the car', a thin rakish looking young man who drove near the porch to hail her. "Is there a guy named Carter Demand here?” he called In a voice that had a certain queer huskiness in it. “No, we’re expecting him momentarily, though,” she answered. “Can I give him a message for you?” “Thanks. No. I’ll look In later,” and he roared off down the drive. Back on the main road he slowed down a little. His gas was low and he cursed his carelessness in starting on this trip without loading up. It meant driving hack some ten miles to the nearest village gas station before he could go on with his pursuit. “Took so much time to lose that Other car I’ve missed Deland entirely,” he muttered to himself. "But I know where to find him. It’s where he went one day last week. And when I get there I’ll be alone; no dicks on my trail to Interfere.” HO drove rapidly back to a filling station and bought gas and oil. Then he drove off Into the falling night, turning his car toward the country roads Joyce and Carter had bo recently traversed. On the outskirts *of Cleveland Jim Hopkins was standing looking at a directory in a corner drug store. “It’s more than twenty miles from here if he went to his country place, and nearly as far if he went to the club,” he told himself. “If Deland's at the club, he’s all right. Butch won't
Six Years of Stomach Agony Now She Eats Anything, Sleeps Soundly and Gaining Weight. If you can’t eat without suffering, if you are trying to do the day’s work while tortured by pain and indigestion, you will be glad to read how Mrs. Mike Hennis, Eortville, Ind., overcame this dreadful trouble. She writes: “I had severe stomach and bowel trouble for over six years. Had dizzy spells and at times would have fallen if I had not had something to hold to. Was awfully nervous, had gas on my stomach most all the time, severe cramps and agonizing pains. I felt like I was raw from the bottom of my stomach clear up to my throat, and I had to take soda all the time. My first and only relief came from Viuna. After the second dose I could feel it was helping me. After the second bottle all the gas, cramps, etc., disappeared for good, and now I can eat anything without one bit of fear. My appetite is good, my nervousness gone, and I sleep like a baby at night. Until I took Viuna I had never weighed over 110 pounds in my life, and now I weigh 114 pounds, and am gaining every day.” Viuna acts promptly on sluggish bowels, lazy liver and weak kidneys. It purifies the blood, clears the skin, re-, stores appetite and digestion, and brings new strength and energy to the whole body. Take a bottle on trial. Then if you re not glad you tried Viuna, your money will be refunded. $1 at druggists, or mailed por£said by Iceland Medicine Cos., Indianapolis, Ind.

try any funny stuff there, I'm sure. But if lie's out at his country place, Lord help him. I'm seven kinds of a damn fool for letting that big bum of a Butch give me the slip that way.” Sketching a map of the road he must follow from tho directions In must follow from directions in the book he was consulting, he also turned his car along the road that led between the high, bare cliffs to the quaint red gabled house. To a stranger approaching the house it presented an air of inviting comfort. Shades were drawn, soft blobs of light marked the windows, and a lazy coil of smoke rose from the great chimney. But up on the second floor in one of the luxurious bedrooms a white faced girl stared fearfully at a handsome man who seemed quite at ease. His general air Indeed was one of interested amusement. “Then we are not at the Anvil Club?” Joyce was saying. “We are at Oakland, my country home. If you care to go to the Anvil Club with me in a few days I will take you. I'm afraid your welcome would be, well, rather frosty." Joyce pushed the button to summon the maid. “No use,” said Carter. “It's disconnected. I think she's gone off to a servants’ gathering in the neighborhood. I told her we wouldn’t want her again tonight. In fact, I gave every one a holiday—in honor of your coming to Oaklands.” “Why did you bring me here?” Joyce asked. "I thought you would enjoy the country air, the fine surroundings, the house Is more than a century old and I'll be glad to point out some of its Interesting features at another time If you care to see them.” lie seated himself and smiled at Joyce.” “I hate you,” Joyce said quietly. “If you touch me or come near me, I’ll kill myself.” “With what?” Carter asked, looking about for a possible weapon with an air of interest. "I’ll bite and kick and scratch and fight and throw everything I can pick up,” Joyce said, a hysterical break In her voice. “It won't be necessary,” said/Carter with a yawn. “Violence ot any kind makes no appeal to me. ’l’ll wait until you come willingly to my arms.” “Then you’ll wait forever,” Joyce answered. “It will be worth it,” Carter observed studying her through the smoke from Ills clgaret. Joy’s face grew a shade paler at the slow words and the searching look. She slipped into a chair and sat staring straight ahead, her hands clenched in her lap. “Joyce!” Carter spoke more kindly and the girl looked at him hopefully. “I know I'm talking like a beast. It 5 only because I don’t dare to tell you how I love you. I want you to come to me gladly. I want you to come to me for protection.” Joyce made a sudden movement. “I know that seems Outlandish to you. I myself have placed you where you will need protection. It

was the only way I could bring you face to face with my determination. I swear that I will not touch you while you are here unless you want me to. In a few days I will give you your choice. You may go away. from here with me, to the ends of the world, to a life of untold love and happiness with me. Or you may go away alone, untouched, to face all the gossip and scandal that will be busy with your name. “No one will believe you did not come willingly. No one will believe you were here with me without becoming my mistress. In time you will come to believe it yourself. You will be shunned on every side. People will say I had you for a few days, took all I wanted of you, and cast you aside. “You will have no answer to this story, for it will bear all the marks of truth. You will fight it for a while and then you will yield to it and follow the only path that Is left to a girl alone in the world, smeared with the story that will be repeated again and again about you. “You can’t win, Joyce. You can only suffer alone. No one will bej lieve in your virtue, ever again. “On tho other hand, you may come to me tonight. I will leave you here alone to think of all this and I will wait for you in my room. It is across the hall. You will come to me. We will have a few days of happiness here together. Then we will snap our fingers at the busy bodies and leave for Europe, for life In Paris, for whatever scenes you will. “I love you, Joyce, and I will make you happy. In time we will ably be married. I can arrange for a divorce, and when we return in a few years the very people who have sneered at you will humble, themselves before you as Carter Deland's wife. You can be a leader of society here. You can have all the power of my wealth and position and old family name, plus all the youth and beauty that Is yours. You will be wise, experienced, beautiful, traveled. Men will worship you and women will fight for your favor. “You’ll have to choose, Joyce. There’s no way out. Either you will go with me to love and luxury. Look!” He went to a large closet and came hack with an armful of dresses which he flung on a chair before her." Lovely, sheer thing that cried to be worn. “They have all been made for you,” he told her. “You must be beautiful. You will enchant me and keep me your slave.” From the mantel he took a heavy copper jewel chest and opened it, hojding it under her gaze. She saw a jumble of jewels, diamonds, pearls, emeralds, rings, necklaces, bracelets. “Some of them have been in my family for generations,” he told her. “I took them all from the vaults for you. And I havo bought new ones. I will buy you more.” He watched her white face, so still, so quiet, almost as though she were dead. “Joyce, it seems cruel to you now for me to force this choice on you. Some day when you look hack upon

the years of love and luxury you will thank me. For I love you, Joyce. That you must believe. I know life. I am offering you the best that life gives to any of us. Wealth, position, the love of nun for woman. Does the shame and disgrace that will he yours if you go away to fight alone balance any of this?” Joyce sat silent. “If it is money you want,” he went on after a' pause, “I told you once before that I would give you a large sum outright in your own name. I repeat that offer. You need never be dependent on me, or jin anyone again.” “Suppose I tell you I love Henry Deacon,” said Jo^ce. “That need not trouble you. You will forget it. You have no love for Henry Deacon. You have let him struggle through this winter without even giving him your promise to marry him. I will confess that my one fear when I was away was that you truly loved that boy. Blit when I returned and found you still unpromised, willing to seek fun and good times with other men, I knew that there was nothing deep to that attachment.” “I’m going to leave you alone now, Joyce,” Carter said gently. “There is no way for you to escape. You must choose between the life I can offer you and a ruined reputation alone. I will be waiting. Don’t keep me waiting too long. Joyce, Joyce.” He caught her passionately in his arms and kissed her. She neither answered nor resisted him. He released her and passed from the room. Joyce stared Into the fire. Her life lay In ruins about her. She knew the truth of Carter’s words. Alone she would be tho target for all the scandal that surrounds a girl who has strayed from the one path

She thought deeply. “But I can always face myself. Always know in my own heart that my ‘price is above rubies' ’’ —she bowed her head and -wept at these old words of her father's. “I’ll go away,” she decided, “just as soon as Carter will let me, an'd my ‘price’ will always be ‘above rubies’.” She felt strengthened and comforted by her resolution. She tried to pray for help. A sense of peace enveloped her. She would not fall, her faith in herself, her father’s faith in her, the trust of her absent mother, the loyal love that Deke had always given her. She half screamed at the sound of a tapping on the window. Butch Seltzer was looking in at her. (To Be Continued) Copyright. 1027, Famous Features Syndicate, Inc.
