SYNOPSIS JOYCE DARING is left homeless by the separation of her parents. She works as a telephone operator at a hotel. Her mother disappears and her father, penitent, searches for . her. Through CARTER DELAND, Joyce is introduced into society and makes an enemy of CATHERINE SHERWIN. who is jealous of Deland’s attentions. Deland proposes a life of luxury and easo to Joyce, who refuses angrily. HENRY DEACON, who is in love with Joyce, IS engaged in untangling his father s business, and his little time to give her. She is befriended by MRS. MAI.TBY, a wealthy widow for whom she did a sre at service, and upon Mrs. Maitoy s eath comes into a fortune, rms she agrees to keep secret, at the request of JUDGE PERKi'NS, the Maltby family lawyer. Joyce continues her interest in a reading circle, of which MRS. BIT.sSIMONS is patroness. CHAPTER XI. SETTING THE TRAP The same hour that Joyce and Judge Perkins were conferring in the Maltby library over Mrs. Maltby’a will, Carter Deland was being driven to his old rooms at his club. He was wearied of the sunshine and violets in the Bermudas, and the few advances he had made toward adventure with women had seemed flat and stale. He found ttie vision of Joy's youth, her slight figure, her saucy tongue had rendered all other women insipid or too bold. He was returning with one fixed purpose in his mind. “I’ll not blunder again by being too sudden or leaving any loopholes about for escape,” he promised himself. Back in his sitting-room, which welcomed him as quietly as though he had left only the day before, he sat planning, testing his scheme from every angle and finding it flawless. “Except for some act of God,” he thought rather grimly, “Joyce and I will be sailing for foreign lands in another month,” and he gave himself over to the luxury of dreaming. An hour later, Marian, listening in idly to a call she had put through to Mrs. Fitz-Simons, announced to the board, “Carter Deland’s back.” Several interested ears took note of the following conversation: “Dear Mrs. Fitz-Simons this is Carter Deland calling.” “Carter! How wonderful! When did you get back?” “This morning, and I am calling you at once, I am so impatient for news of you and Matilda and all our good friends, but particularly of you, dear Mrs. Fitz-Simons.” “Flatterer! I ought not to speak to you, after the way you deserted us in the middle of the season, leaving a trail of broken hearts behind you.” “O, surely not that. When may I see you? I found the Bermudas very dull and I am longing for some excitement. Can you lunch with me today?” "I should love to, Carter. At one?” “At one. Farewell for a few hours.” Marian grimaced at her fellow, eavesdroppers. “Os all the soft soap •lingers „ she said. “Do you suppose fat old Mrs. Mush believes all that stuff?” one of the other girls asked. Marian shrugged. “I don't know whether she believes it or not, but I’m dead sure she likes it.” What do you suppose Joy Is going to do now that Carter's back?” someone asked, for the sewing circle took a deep interest in the heart affairs of its members. “I don’t know,” said Marian. “She passed him up cold when Deke came back.” “It doesn’t look to me like she's so crazy about Deke, the way she’s chasing around with fellows from the hotel.” “I hear dhis old man nearly ran the business in the ground just before 1m had that stroke and Deke’s been es busy trying to straighten that mot tKat he hasn’t much time for Joy these days,” Marian said a little defensively. “She’s not taking his absence very hard that I can see,” went on the other. “Oh, these transient guys don’t count,’' said Marian. “Look how I go around with ’em when Jack’s away. He don’t care. He knows my heart’s in the right place.” “I'll bet he does care, but he. just don’t want you to know he’s jealous. There never was a guy that wanted his sweetie to chase around with other fellows.” “Jack’s different,” Marian began. She was greeted with laughter and there began a hot discussion on the subject of jealousy, male and female brands. The subject was still in order an hour later when Marian switched a call to Mrs. Fitz-Simons’ suite to tell her that Carter was waiting for her in the lobby. She joined another girl to peer out at the debonair Carter, who was lounging near Joy’s desk. Joy had not come in, having telephoned Miss Scanlon that she would be late today, but would work late to make it up. “Handsome as ever,” Marian remarked, noting Carter carefully. “I’ll bet he’s a real devil,” commented the other girl,, half enviously. “I hope Joy has passed him up for good,” said Marian. serious when they play around with a telephone operator.” They watched Mrs. Fitz-Simons’ gushing welcome to Carter then went back to their work. Carter and Mrs. Fitz-Simmons went into the dining room and were soon talking confidentially over their lunch. “So you really missed us all down there in the Bermudas?” Mrs. FitzSimmons was saying. “Not a single pretty woman there,” Carter answered with a sigh. “Oh, Carter! And think of all the lovely girls back here, really languishing because you'weren’t here to tea them around.” “How is Catherine?” Carter asked. “Pretty as ever. She took your going very hard for a few weeks, but she seems to be quite interested in the Robbins’ boy now.” “Five years her junior,” Carter remarked. “Age doesn’t make any difference these days.” “No? Then I am in luck, for I am beginning to feci very old.” “You'll never really grow old. Carter,” Mrs. Fitz-Simmons told him. “No, I’ll just shrivel up some day I suppose,” he said with a little shudder. “Franky Starret’s gone to England with her mother to see John Brent, that poor boy she's so determined to marry.” “I'll give them a year,” said Carter, dryly. “And how are the other girls in our reading circle?” “Meaning Joyce Darin?” Mrs. Fitz-Simons asked, shrewdly. “If you like,” said Carter, indifferently. “I still think she's a dear,” was the answer, "though Mattie Truesdale says she believes Joyce is very deep. She has always seemed very sweet to me. Mattie says she is going out a great deal' with .men from the hotel here.” “Henry Deacon lost interest?” “No, not exactly, but I hear he is so absorbed to his father’s business that he hasn't much time for anything else.” “Too bad,” said Carter, “but people who lose their money are always rather dull, don't you think?” “Indeed I do, dear Carter. Now tell me, have you any plans for amusing us all?” Carter looked at his plate musingly. “How about giving a house party at the Anvil Club for a week? Tt won’t open until June and we’ll have a week or so of lovely weather the first of the month. Cool enough for fires in the evening, warm enough for an early game of golf and for riding and hiking outdoors in the daytime.” “What a marvelous idea! Let's plan it all right now.” “You and I are both on the board. The other three members are in Californa, so we needn’t worry about getting the consent of the board to opening the first floor of the clubhouse for a week. We can send out a. caterer and his staff to

“I’ll have her within a month.” take over the cooking and housekeeping. AH we need now is a select guest list.” Mrs. Fitz-Simons took out an elaborate gold pencil. “Am I the hotess?” she asked. “By all means.” Mrs. Fitz-Simons began to write. “Matilda Truesdale,’ to help me chaperon.” she said, noting the name. “Helen Powers—she’s just managed to get Reggie Forbes to propose and will be glad to have him to herself for a while. We’ll ask them both. Catherine Sherwin, Harry Robbins. I'm sorry Franky's away, she's such good fun at a house party. Florence Watkins, Maybelle Hutchinson. I’ll have to ask them what men they want—who else?” “Aren't you going to ask a lovely lady for me?” Carter said. “I suppose, of course, you would want me to include Joyce,” said Mrs. Fitz-Simons, in surprise. “It would be a treat for her, wouldn’t it?” Cartermused. “But somehow I don't believe we would get her to come as a guest, not if she knew I was to be there, and it might be difficult for her to arrange to be away from her work that long at a time.” “Oh. I quite counted on her.” said Mrs. Fitz-Simons. “I’m sure I could ge\ Mr. Robertson here to put another girl in her place for a week.” “I doubt if she'd come, particularly as Franky, her special freind, isn’t here.” Mi’s. Fitz-S.’mons was thoughtful. Though without malice, she had promised herself an interesting time* observing Catherine when she found Carter again paying court to Joyce, for his indifference to Joy’s name

had not convinced her that his interst in the girl was dead. “I have it," she exclaimed. “I’ll ask her as a special favor to me to come out with the party and take ; charge of the switch board. There won’t be much for her to do, but it will give her an excuse for coming and I can use that in talking to Mr. Robertson, too.” “Capital,” Carter agreed. “When she isn’t busy she can play with i the rest of us.” They talked a little longer of their plans. Mrs. Fitz-Simons checked over her list and as soon as lunch was finished went to her room to telephone her invitations. Carter passed out of the lobby without seeing Joyce. He had no intention of alarming her before Mrs. Fitz-Simons’ invitation was delivered. He felt well pleased yrith j hirnself. Mrs. Fitz-Simons had fal- : len into his plans with surprising ease. “She doesn't think I'm entirely free of interest in Joyce now,” he said to himself, "but she doesn't | have any particular suspicions.” Back at his club he ordered his ' car and went for a long drive in | the country. Returning to the city i he went to his rooms and took fropi j a closet the box containing the i dress he had helped Joyce buy so many months before. Presently a messenger called for it. A little later a well dressed woman of middle age, the proprietor of an expensive specialty shop, was sitting, order pad in hand before him. “I will have everything complete,” she said, with a slight French accent, "within a week. To Monsieur's country home?” Carter repeated his directions and bowed his caller out.
