‘MIGHT HAVE BEEN’ IS UNHAPPINESS SOURCE In Nearly Every Case It Isn’t a Particle Better Than What We Have at Hand, Says Miss Lee. By Martha Lee Maud Muller raking hay “on a summer’s day” may have been charming enough to keep the judge who saw her then, pining the rest of his life over what “might have been.” But that’s in poetry.

In real life “what might have been’’ in 99 out of 100 cases wouldn’t be a particle better, perhaps not as good, as what we have at hand, but it’s human nature to idealize. Through the smoke clouds of illusion, we believe that the sweetheart we almost married was the one big bet for happiness; that the job or the school, or the other way ’round to our life work was the one we should have taken. This fiction of what “might have been” if dwelt upon too persistently, is likely to cause unhappiness, so “Get wise” to this argument and dismiss it. The grass in the pasture across the way is not more green than on this side either. It only looks to be. Thinks of ‘Other Man’ Pear Martha Lee: I am very unhappy ami I wish you could give me some comfort. I am 28 years and have been married three years. My husband is a fairly good man, but I am seriously beginning to feel that our marriage was a great mistake. I am very ambitious and like the best of everything and he seems to think entirely opposite. T. guess what is really the matter is that I married the wrong map. I was engaged for a time to a young man who is going ahead big in the world now. I broke the engagement because I thought I liked my husband the best, but I often think how much brighter life would be if I had held to the first one. MRS. MAMIE C. I You’re a poor sport, Mrs. Mamie, to be so reluctant to stick to your bargain. As you have no very definite fault to find with your husband, I believe the cause of your dissatisfaction is that you’re dwelling on rosy dreams that you now think would have materialized with the other man. You have no proof that they would. The other man, most '.ijeely, has faults and you wouldn’t have been any happier with him, for remembering the man who is now your present husband, if you had married the other, you would still have had a “might have been” complex. This Person Lies Dear Martha Lee: Will you please advise me? lam such a liar. I am disgusted with myself. I begin talking and the first think 1 know, I will be telling a terrible lie. The rest of my family is just as truthful as I am a liar. I never heard any of them lie. I simply don't know what to do. Please answer at onee. "You will save some lies. , UNTRUTHFUL. you’ve taken the first step out of your fault by sincerely desiring to come out of it. I think you’ve mesmerized yourself a little by telling yourself that you can’t help being a liar. Indeed, you can, and in your ability to see this, lies the way to freedom. You aren't even held by inheritance, so your problem can't be difficult. Letters Merely Friendly k Dear Martha Lee: Not long ago, I met | a fellow who treated mo with the greatr est respect always, which was more than most fellows want to. He said he loved me but as I was not sure I loved him. it discouraged him so. he left town. Now his lettei-3 arc getting just merely friendly and I get a little blue over it. What do you think? Do you think I really Jove him a little? Sometimes I think I do. W. N. I do not think you love him, but it was pleasant to possess his admiration. It is human nature to value that which seems to be getting away from us and I think that is your situation.

She Got Rid of Those Two Bad Mornings Menstruation is a perfectly natural process, but the painful part is NEEDLESS. Long study has absolutely conquered menstrual pain. Science now offers women reliable and complete relief—in a simple utterly harmless tablet called midol. This newest achievement of t-bc laboratory has nothing' to do with kdrastk'i habit-forming drugs that Mull pain by benumbing the whole system! Midol acts directly on the organs affected by menstruation, and nowhere else. Yet relief and absolute comfort come in five to seven minutes! So, why have a twinge of pain—feel "low” or even uncomfortable! Or take anything to depress the heart or upset the system? All drug stores have midol in a thin aluminum box that tucks in purse or pocket—for 50 cents. Takes Pain Off the Calendar

He’s Not True Dear Martha Lee: I have been going with a girl over a year and I think the world of her. Hut I am not truo to her. at least I oecksionally have dates with other girls. I keep telling myself that is not fair to my steady girl, as I would not stand for her having other dates. What shall I do? JOE. Well, Joe, you must be pretty weak if you can’t do what you think is right in this Instance. If you think so much of this girl, it seems that it would be very easy to pass up the others. A young man signing himself “A Faithful Times Reader” asks a question relating to legal obligations. I think the girl could proceed against you In another State, as well as this, but you’d better consult an attorney, as the age may have some bearing upon the matter. Can a Man Be True? Dear Miss Lee: I have been going with a fellow for almost a year and a half. Ho tells mo he doesn't go out with any one else, and I have never found it to be untrue. The only thing that is worrying me is this: Can a man be true to one woman? So many persons make fun of me for being true to him. They say. ‘‘Don’t think he wouldn't go With others if he had a chance. It isn't a mans nature. ' I'm beginning to be pessimistic on this matter. What would you say? OPAL L. Well, Opai, you certainly take the prize for hunting up trouble. Be glad that you have come across a young man whom you “never found to be untrue,” and quit paying attention to suspicious-minded folks. Slams Kentuckians Dear Martha Lee: I read your answers every night, and wonder if you would tell me why people throw slams at others and do not see their own faults. I am a Kentuckian. and have lived here two years, and on our -treet live -nine lolks who are always slamming Kentuckians. Now. the one who does this criticising is a rank housekeeper and her children are dressed funny and are far from clean. Now.- where I came from the people were as clean as anyone and their houses were furnished as nicely as the average anywhere. Don't you think it would be a good idea for people to occasionally look in the mirror and see what they are themselves? A TIMES READER. Undoubtedly, there could be no greater general reform put into action than for people to correct their own faults before going gunning for the faults of others. But from time immemorial, some folks have amused themselves by panning the other fellow?’so let them be above noticing such observations, which probably come from ignorance and misunderstanding. *

DINNER Tomato cream soup, chartreuse of chicken, new carrots in white sauce, fresh asapargus salad, floating island, Parker House rolls, milk, coffee. Fold in whites of eggs, beaten until stiff and dry, with vanilla. Turn into large deep pan lined with buttered paper and bake one hour in a moderate overt. Two brick-shaped bread pans can be used if a large one is not available. Bake for the same length of time. It takes about two cups of nut meats to make one poufyd.

HOUSEHOLD SUGGESTIONS

PEARL-HANDLED KNIVES Never let pearl or ivory handled knives sink into the dishpan. The blades should be wiped carefully as water loosens and discolors the handles. i KITCHEN SHELVES If you cannot afford to paint your whole kitchen this spring, one can of bright enamel will liven the cabinet shelves and add a gay note to the room. DECAYED VEGETABLES Housewives with cellars for storing vegetables should exercise scrupulous care in springtime to remove at once any vegetables unfit for use. DINNER DISH Planked liam, with stuffed tomatoes or flavorsome stuffed onions and glazed sweets is particularly appealing for a main course In spring. NEW CURTAINS Now is the time to dress up windows with new curtains. If your other rooms do not ndod them at least the kitchen should have some new checkered gingham or chintz to tell you it is spring. Don’t Squeeze Blackheads — Dissolve Them Squeezing out UlaekheacU makes large, ugly pores. The sate and sane way to get rid of these blemishes is to dissolve them. Get two ounces of Calonite powder from your drug store, sprinkle a little on a hot. wet cloth, rub over the blaekheads. and everyone, big-vpr little, will disappear at once. N
