'Three youths, who pleaded guilty to 'stealing $37 worth of chickens, es'caped with short sentences to the Indiana State Farm here because Circuit Judge Fred E. Hines said juries had refused to convict men !of greater crimes, j “Recently a man got $119,000 from a Noblesville bank, and as far as I I know nothing has ever been done ! with him,” the judge declared in 'open court. “Hamilton County farmers have been swindled out of nearly $1,000,000 by bank failures and other means, but as far as I know none has been to prison for these crimes. I see men In this courtroom who served on those juries which tried ■these bankers. Shall I send these boys to prison when other men who have money to employ astute lawyers go free?”

‘Off Women; Vow of Three in Jail Bu United Press CHICAGO, April 14.—Three men who robbed a jewelry store of merchandise valued at $7,000 sat in police cells today and avowed they were “off women.” They referred particularly to a pretty and “hard” brunette who accompanied them in the hold-up, did her part to perfection and left a handbag with her telephone number in it. Police traced the number and went to the house listed under it. They were met with revolver shots and summoned reinforcements. Tear gas bombs dislodged occupants and all were arrested. The girl gave her name as Helen Conklin. The men were Carl Ness, 23; Clarence Swanson, 17, and Joseph Menschinski, 37. The congregation of a Kentucky church was thrown into a panic when a large blacksnake was discovered coiled in a bookcase near the pulpit.
