YES, K SHOULD MARRY HER, LETTERS DECLARE
. Martha Lee Swamped With Answers to Question Asked by Young Man—Say Child Deserves a Name. By Martha Lee Such a flood ot' answers descended upon this desk in relation to “K,’’ a college youth, who was reluctant to marry the girl who expected him to give her coming child a name, that we reproduce another batch. t
Many of the letters being similar in content, we could not print them all. Also, many are necessarily “boiled down”. Sympathy for the girl seems to predominate, perhaps because the majority of the letters came in from women. But here is one of the most interesting from a man: Was in 'K’s’ Boots Dear Martha Lee: I have read the letters about "K” and most ot them seem to come down hard on the yountr fellow. He has a side. I know, because I was once in just hia boots. I was a little olden—24. hut I felt just as much up in the air as he doeß. X finally married the Kiri and although I can’t say if that would be "K’s” luck or not, I will say that X never have regretted that I did so. Our little child—a girl, is now 15 and (he most precious thing in my life. Her mother only lived seven years but they were really happy years as she loved me with all her heart and did everything for me. I user I to think I did not care a great deal for her, but since she has been gone. X at least have cared no more for any one else. And what wolud Ido without my little girl—especially if I had the terrible thought that she was out in the world, perhaps needy and alone? For your own peace of mind, “K,” I would say what is the hardest way now, will prove to be the easiest in/the long run. \ GIRL'S FATHER. Expects Much of Women llPar Martha Lee: Your readers who answered “'s’’ letter, seemed entirely to overlook any question other than “To ■ whom should sympathy go?” Also. I W noticed a persistent tendency (which certainly shows the modern trend of thought! to ask why the girl should suffer more than the young man in the case. Now I may be as out of date as an old grandpap, but I still think there is a reason. If the women do not have higher standards than the men: if they don t watch their step better, and feel a responsibility for keeping the men in their n'aies. isn't the moral standard going to sink clear out of sight? It's asking a whole lot of the women • to be better than we are, but we do ask it and some of us are foolish (perhaps) to believe that the majority of women won't fail us in this regard. A RESPECTER OF WOMEN. Child Should Be Considered Dear Martha Lee: In all the letters relating to "K ' I failed to see a word concerning the ehild itself. They all discussed the feelings of the girl, or ”K’’ or his parents. How about the poor little baby that, is coming? If “K'’ is reasonably sure that the child is his. doesn't he feel any responsibility towards it? What about its support afterwards—and its education and its name? Just be sure of this. “K.” if you desert this girl in her hour of need, the thought of that little child out in the world without a name will stay with you and you will repent doing this. Marry the girl. I say. Undoubtedly her great love for yo# has caused her to go astray with you: Give your little baby a name and incidentally you will keep > your own self respect. CONSTANT READER. (A Young Business Woman) Father and Mother” Inhuman? Dear Martha lee: In regard to “K." His father and mother are inhuman if they would take away his allowance and -poil his chances for an education simply because he tried to right the wrong ho did that poor girl. Why should this poor girl suffer alone? I suppose like about all men. he is ready to say. "The woman is to blame." X should like to know if “K" has any eis<rrs of his own. If so. how would he like some fellow to treat, that sister as he
I Cold-Water D Tinting II (CV>T T right 1927) "
There are lots of "prepared tints” for home tinting of your dainty lingerie, but did you ever try real dye-tinting with a real dye? You get glorious effects when you begin with the true tones that 6nly real dyes can impart no fabrics! An envelope of the actual dye powder is only 15 cents at any drugstore. Sift a bit in cold water—dip the garment—and it’s done. Only, ; you’ll have a smooth, even tone just '■exactly like materials have when bought; none of that streaky look; never weak or "washy” no matter how much you dilute or the color. Furthermore, you can "set” the tint if you want, by merely having the water boil. Every drugstore has Diamond dyes, color cards and suggestions B for exquisite tinting or regular, permanent dyeing of anything. Or, write for Color Craft—a marvelous book of ideas in full colors; free from DIAMOND DYES, Dept. N33, Burlington, Vermont. Diamond Dyes Dip to TINT—Boil to BYE

thinks of treating this one? Isn't “K'’ man enough to right this wrong? READERS OF THE TIMES Start Over Some Place Dear Martha Lee: Although a constant render of your column. I missed “K’s'' letter, but have gathered the main facts from reading the answers. What I cannot understand is that in all those answers no one seemed to think of the child itself and its future. If "K’’ wants to act like a man, he will marry that girl, even if he has to have the marriage annulled later. The child would then at least have a name. My husband and I cannot understand how. because of a little embarrassment, this "R gives no thought to this child of his own flesh and blood. Wo are sure even if he has to go some place and start over again, it will be the happiest thing for him to do. M. H. Thinks Customs Unfair . Dear Martha Lee: What terrible thing: is our civilization that makes customs that result in such conditions as are confronting' this ’K” and his young: sweetheart! How ridiculous that the weaker one of the couple—the girl, should have the hard, hard burden to boar while the young- man walks off and forgets it. Jt s easy to sayq she should have resisted temptation. So should the vouncr man. Girl* find Jt no easier to “be pood” than yountr men do. Yet we are still uncivilized enough to punish them a thousand times harder when they do overstep the conventions. JUSTICE. He Took Half of Blame Dear Martha Lee: This letter j 3 from both my husband and mo. As Wo read and were interested in "Ks" letter we were once confronted with just such a situation as he and that girl. In our case, we loved each other and wo considered this a GX obl /‘ m that belonged to us both. ' Vp . have been married for two years and I am only 10 now. I love my husband dearly and he 10-.os me. He always took even more than half the blame and is so good to me, as he says ho is trving to make up to me. Don't you think I have a wonderful husband? I do. and we will surely bp happy "ever afterwards. A LUCKY. HAPPY WIFE. LUNCHEON Asparagus short- | cake, head lettuce with Thousand Island dressing, ginger apples, milk, tea. DINNER Baked shad with raisins, scalloped potatoes, dandelion greets, bran rolls, stuffed beet salad rice custard pudding, milk, coffee. Very often when fish is served, a hearty dessert is needed to balance the meal. Raisins are' not used in the rice pudding since they appear with the fish but dates combine excellently with rice and make the pudding more interesting than if made plain. r sparagus Shortcake Two cups flour, 4 teaspoons baking powder, 1-2 teaspoon salt, 4 tablespoons butter, 2 eggs, 1-3 cup rich milk, 1 bunch asparagus, 2 cups of white sauce. Mix and sift flour, salt and baking powder. Rub in butter. Beat eggs until light and add milk to them. Cut this mixture into dry ingredients. Roll on a floured > molding board making a sheet about three-fourths of an inch thick. Spread half the surface with butter and fold the other over, making two layers. Bake in a ho- oven for twenty minutes. Split and spread with butter. Fill with asparagus cut into inch lengths steamed until tender and combined with hot sauce. Cover top of shoi/cake with creamed, asparagus and serve. If the asparagus is cooked in boiling water use the water that is drained from the vegetable in making the sauce. Soap suds that are scarcely even tepid and two rinse waters the same temperature will prevent shrinking. Pull into shape while ironing. NEW TINWARE New cake tins- should be greased slightly and warmed slowly before they are first used. Flour sprinkled over them instead of grease will prevent the cake from sticking.
