By Leonard E. Pearson The June graduating class of Manual Training High School elected as editor of the Senior Booster, school annual, Abraham Katz, who less than three years ago came to the United States unable to speak, read or write English. Katz moved to Indianapolis in the summer of 1024 with his parents and two sisters. His father. Rabbi S. A. Katz of the Jewish Orthodox Church, brought his family here from Eletz, in> central Russia, about 400 miles from Moscow. Abraham's three older brothers, all doctors, chose to remain in Europe, but the rest of the family longed.to come to America, as they did not find their native land a'desirable place to live after the revolution. of the English language. Until he was nine he had not attended school in Russia, and before then he could neither read nor write. He began his schooling just after the Russian revolution, and acquired a knowledge of both Hebrew and Russian languages. At. the time of removal to America none of the family had a knowledge of English, so the boy’s parents and sisters were as handicapped as lie. Abraham expressed his appreciation of the help he received from Jewish friends whom lie soon made here. They conversed with him in their racial tongue and In that way were able to teach him English. His half-year in grade school No. 6. was also of inestimable value to him, he says. Two-Tear Student In spite of his late start in school and the fact that he is attending a high school where all classes are conducted in a language relatively new to him, Katz is completing his work in two years. He has not been required to take subjects in the order customarily prescribed, but a special schedule has been worked out for him through the sympathetic assistance of his teachers. He was given examinations for some studies in Russian and credit has been allowed for that, making it possible for him to be graduated in half the normal time. That a person in his situation should become aderrt in the use of English and become an outstanding high school journalist in so short a time is extraordinary. In his second semester in Manual he became a re-

porter on the staff of the Booster, school weekly newspaper. His accomplishments in this work warranted his promotion the next term to editorial writer, and he started the present semester, his last In high school, as news editor. This position he has resigned since being elected by his classmates to edit their annual. When asked if he had found English difficult, Katz replied that his writing and reading had been easy. He admitted, but in readily understandable terms and accent, that his hardest problem had been pronunciation.
