svNorsia JOYCE DARING is lelt homeless when her parents separate. She sets work as a telephone operator in a hotel. Her mother disappears mysteriously and her father, penitent, goes in search of her. Joyeo has an opportunity to beliend MRS. EVANGELINE MALTBY. a very wealthy woman, upon her son’s death. Introduced to society, she makes a. friend of FRANKY STARRET, an enemy of CATHERINE SHERVVPN. who is Jealous of CARTER DELAND'S attentions to Joyce. Deland’s intentions re challenged by his younger friend, HENRY DEACON, who is in love with Joyce and who returns from college to take over his father's busbies* and to light for* Joyce's love. While DA\ ID TOMPKINS, childhood sweetheart, yearns for Joyce outside this charmed circle. CHAPTER XXXIII Cottage for Two If Joyce expected Deke to take advantage of her surrender to him she was doomed to disappointment. She thought of it all the next morning, and as she made ready for work. Deke had told her plainly that until she was sure of her own mind lie would not let her promise to marry him. "You’re much nearer than you were in the fall," he told her, “for now I can kij* you and if you don't answer me at least you don’t shrink from me, and I don't believe, Joyce Daring, that you’re the girl to enjoy promiscuous kissing, are you?" he had held her away and looked at her with a mocking light in his eyes. "The next time you are kissed you are going to say to yourself, ‘this isn't like Deke’ —” She had puffed away from him indignantly. He had laughed and kept the evening at a bantering temperature for the rest of his stay. "I love a fight,” he told her once more as he was leaving. “I'm going to fight this chemical business back on its feet in the daytime, and I’m going to fight for my girl at night. If I weren’t so modest I’d tell you straight that ‘I always get what I go after’—that’s what they say about my rivaj, isn't it, Joy, girl?” Joyce was not sure she liked this teasing. Underneath his lightness she knew that Deke's desire for her burned steadily. She felt that something in him had been outraged at the thought of Carter’s kissing he*. She was walking down to work, her thoughts keeping pace with her steps. "I suppose,” she continued, mentally, "that if I were in love with Deke, or were one of those big fine heroines you read about, that I’d marry him now and help him pull through this business tangle. And maybe. If he fails, be poor all my life, like mother has been." Life with Deke owning an automobile, able to give her riches, might he very different from life with Deke and having to struggle. While life with Carter would always be easy, soft, luxurious. She nodded to various acquaintances as she adjusted her headpiece. There came Matilda Truesdale following Judge Perkins out of the dining room. Joyce listened in idly more because she was not busy than because she lelt interested in Vinegar’s gossip. In a movent, however, she was listening with all her might, for the talk concelned Deke. Mattie was talking to a friend. "Yes,” she was saying, "I hear they are going to leave Everything. Mrs. Deacon is taking Mr. Deacon to Florida to get out of the way of creditors. I guess there will be plenty of unpaid bills. They always lived beyond their means, you know. She was nothing but the daughter of a small town judge and his father kept a drug store.” “What’s going to happen to the chemical plant?” asked a voice. "I hear that young Henry’s come back from school to see what he can do with it. I guess things are in a dreadful mess. And Henry’s so taken up with a girl that he won’t be good for much.” "Someone I know?” "No, just a baby-faced little thing, a telephone operator down lure at the hotel.” “Not the same girl Carter’s been going around with?” “Yes, the same one. Isn’t is disgusting? Carter’s been no use all this season bec;%ise of this doll-faced creature, and now Henry Deacon <s going to let his father’s business go to the wall on account of her.” "Are Henry’s intentions serious?” "Oh, I suppose they are. The Deacons are that kind, you know. Very bourgeois. I’ve no doubt he means to marry the girl, that is, if she’s marriageable after Carter gets through with her.” "I heard that Carter’s really lost his head over her. May marry her.” "I don’t think so for a minute. Why should he? She’s just smart enough to hold out a little longer than the others have, that’s all.” Joy’s face was burning. She directed a look at Mattie Truesdale's hack that might have slain that lady, Mattie elaborated on her theme for a few minutes then came out of the booth. “Charge that call to my room, operator,” she said as she went by. About the middle of the afternoon a messenger camo in with a small package for Joy. Wondering, she unwrapped it, to find a key lying in a bed of cotton in a used candy box. Under the key lay a note. “This is for you. I'll' explain tlje first night you’ll let me. Leave word at the boardifig house, when i can see you. Davey." The thought of Davey was like a cool breeze on Joy’s troubled mind. She was more disturbed by Mattie’s gossip than she cared to admit, so she put through a call to the boarding house at once. “Come for me tonight, a little before eight,” was the message she left. She found herself watching the clock as evening drew near. She was feeling neglected. Deke had not called her and there had been no word from Carter. Now obeying a kindlier impulse she called the Deacon home to inquire for Mr. Deacon. The maid connected her with Deke’s mother. “How nice of you to call, Joy,” came the pleasant voice. ‘.'l think my husband is better tonight. He is so glad to have Henry hack. Do you think Henry looks well?” "Yes, indeed,” Joyce answered. "And he seems to like the prospect

of getting right into the business, too." "Poor Henry,” sighed the mother. “He’s very brave about it, but I know he must want to go back to school. I tried to persuade him, but he is so sure it is best for him so begin at the plant at once. His father has such faith in him that he isn’t objecting to making the Florida trip now at all.” "That’s splendid,” said Joyce. "It will do him so much more good if his mind is at rest when he goes.” "Yes, it will. Did you want to speak to Henry?” "No,” said Joyce. "I just called to ask about Mr. Deacon.” “I’ll tell Henry you called,” Mrs. Deacon promised. "1 know it will please him. He's at the office now, going over figures and so on. He telephoned a little while ago to say he expected to be busy there until midnight.” “He mustn’t work, too hard,” said Joyce, lightly. "I’m glad Mr. Deacon is feeling better. Good-by.” "It is nice that Deke is interested in a factory and not in another girl,” Joyce thought whimsically. When Davey came into the lobby that night she waved a hand at him and told him to wait a few minutes. Davey waited, watching her sleek head as she ducked it about, making calls, answering questions, being alert and bright and courteous to even the most captious of her customers. "Did you get the key?” he as)<ed when she joined him a little later. "Yes, what is it, Davey? The key to your heart you sent me?” "Just about,” he said. "I’ll show you pretty soon.” “I’ll bet it’s a Christmas present,” she ventured. "It's only five days to Christmas. I’ve the nicest present for you, Davey, all done up in silver tissue. I picked It to match your eyes—now don’t you spoil it all by guessing.” For Dayey had started to speak. . She relaxed against the cushions of the little coupe as Davey turned westward in the traffic. "Out west?” she asked In surprise. He nodded. “Don’t ask any questions,” he told her. "This is my party. I’ll explain later. They drove out through Edgewater park, and then along streets where lights twinkled in hundreds of homes and they caught an occasional glimpse of families handing Christmas greens, or gathered in a circle reading.

At last they stopped before a small house where the drawn curtains suggested an air of cosy comfort. The lights shone above a small eolonial entrance. Davey led Joyce up on the tiny porch. “You have the key. Open the door,” he said huskily. Joyce obeyed. Followed by Davey, she stepped into anew house, still smelling of fresh paint. A log lire burned in a tiny fireplace in the living room. Behind that she could see the table and buffet of a dining room. A swinging door suggested a kitchen beyond and ahead of her steps led to the second floor. “What is it, Davey?” she asked, wonderingly. "It’s your home, if you'll have it, Joyce,” he answered. “Let's look at it all first, then I’ll tell you about it " Together they went through the dining room, and into the kitchen, where Joyce exclaimed in delight over the white sink, the immaculate built-in cupboards, the bright linoleum,' the shining pots and pans. Davey w'aited while she ran upstairs and into the bedrooms, as yet unfurnished, and into the bath room, gleaming with tile and nickel. He was sitting before the fire when she came down and she sank into a chair near him. "It’s lovely, Davey, just lovely. Are you going to live here? Is your grandmother coming back to keep house for you?"

"Will you live here with me, Joyce?” Davey asked. “Wait, let me tell you all about this before you answer. My grandmother died about two months ago.” "Died? And you didn’t tell me, Davey?” Joyce’s tone reproached herself as well as Davey. "You were pretty busy, Joyce,” he said, steadily. “And 1 was away when it happened. You know I’m not much good at writing. 1 went out there and buried her, and when I came back you were busy both times I tried to see you to tell you about it. “When your father went away last fall I made up my mind to buy a house with some money 1 had in the bank. You remember our driving around this neighborhood last fall?” Joyce nodded. "I guess you don’t remember It, but you told me on one of those drives you thought this was the prettiest house out here, so I found out about It and discovered that I had enough money to make the down payment and that I was earning enough to keep up the monthly payments. "Then when Grandmother Tompkins died I found she had left a life Insurance policy payable to me. It was enough so that when I ha'd taken care of her I could buy some furniture for this place. You can send any of it back you don’t like and exchange it for some that you do. The house is big ' enough for your father or your mother or botli of them to come to, if they wish. It’s waiting for you, Joyce. Will you take it ns your Christinas present? I want you for mine.” . Joyce felt her eyes brim over with tea rs. "Oh. Davey," she half whispered. I wish I coukl.." "Why can’t you. Joyce?” "I just can’t.” “I’ll take care of you, Joyce. I’ll give you everything that you want. I’ll he true to you and love you all my life.” “I know you will. Davey. I know you mean all that you say, hut Davey, just now I don’t love anybody, I don’t want to be married.” “I’ll always wait for you, Joyce. I’ll wait years if necessary. 1“ don’t mind waiting. I want you to be happy, and I believe I can make you happy.” Joyce shook her head and wiped her tears. “I’ll try to give you a chance to make me happy, Davey. I don’t think 1 can make up my mind to marry anyone until mother is found or 1 know she is safe. Please, Davey, don’t feel so about it,” for Davey’s Hopelessness showed plainly in hi., eyes. As they left the house Davey put the key in her hand. "Keep it. Joyce,” he said. "Keep it until you are sure you are not going to want it, ever, then send it hack to me. Until you do I shall have some hope.” They were very silent on the ride

back to Joy's apartment. She felt very tired and did not ask Davey to come up. From the mail box in the hall she took a letter and then went slowly to her apartment. "It would be nice,” she thought, wistfully, as she switched on tlje lights, "if father and mother were sitting here reading, waiting for me.” The handwriting on the letter was familiar. She opened the envelope with a beating heart." “Darling Joy, I rr/ist see you tomorrow night. The car will be waiting when you are through at your useless task to take you to Fairyland.
