SYNOPFI9 JOYCE DARING to loft homeless when her parents separate. She gets work as a telephone operator in a hotel. Her mother disappears mysteriously. HENRY DEACON, in, love with Joyce, returns to college and his older friend. CARTER DK LAND, rushes her and introduces her to society girls. Her roommate. GLADYS WARNER, reveals her traffic marriage to FORRESTER MALTBY, upon his death in a sanitarium. Joyce arranges for his mother to receive Gladys for the funeral, and returns to the society of the girls Deland had possible ana to her telephone board. CHAPTER XXIX Joyce Make* an Enemy Joyce found a note from Mias Scanlon on her headpiece when she reported for work the following Monday at three. "Joyce—Come In to see me a few minutes around noon tomorrow, will you please—Scanny.” Joyce wondered about it, searching her conscience for any mistakes or neglect of her work in the past few weeks. She could fine none, hut could not escape an uneasy feeling as she began to plug in calls and send them out. "Worried?” Marian asked her, noting her abstraction. ‘‘A little,” Joyce admitted. ‘‘Scanny wants me to come in to see her tomorrow at noon. Wonder what about?” "Oh, they’re going to make some changes in hours,” said Marian. "She probably wants you for one of those relief jobs.” The girls kept busily at their work of bringing the world to the fitatler and sending the Statler out o the world until the after dinner lull. Joyce left the board and went out into the lobby to meet Gladys. "Did you tell her?” she asked. “Yep. She wants me to wait other week but I told her I couldn’t. She was awfully nice about it though. So I’m leaving Sunday," Gladys answered. "I don’t want to go. but I’ve got to do something desperate to make Hop notice me.” She glanced over to a palm tree behind which lounged the hotel detective watching the theater crowds. Joyce wondered as she went back to the board what in the world Gladys saw in the no longer young heavy set Jim Hopkins. “Half of it because lie’s a detective,” she decided, “the other half because lie was kind to her when she first came here to work and doesn’t pay any attention to her any more.” At ten o’clock she tidied herself in the mirror of the rest room and walked with Marian into the lobby. She heard her name called and turned to see Carter Deland, impeccable in evening dress, coining out of the dining room. He was alone. Since the night they had dined at the Cleveland Joyce had not seen him, save to nod to. Now he came toward her with outstretched hand. “Miss Daring, Joy, how wonderful to find you like this just as you are going home. May I drive you out that way? I’m due at a dance some time before midnight, but that is two hours yet." "Thank you,” said Joy. "Yes, it is cold and I’ll he glad to ride.” They parsed from the lobby to the revolving door. Lounging just outside, his hands in his pockets, his coat collar turned up, stood Davey. He had not seen Joyce for a week and had come down tonight to drive her home in the new Ford coupe. Catching a glimpse of her companion, he stepped back a little and burrowed deeper into his coat collar. He saw the Statler doorman step forward and open the door of a silent powerful limousine that rolled up at his signal. "And I came here after her in a Ford,” he thought bitterly, looking down at his last reciter’s overcoat, and staring at his roughened hands. He started back to the boarding house, debating all the way the ad-

vlsabllity of talking the matter over with Joy’s father. He found that Carter’s face, with its handsome weariness kept coming betweeu him and his usual radiant vision of Joy. Instinctively he feared Carter. Feared him and hated him. Joyce and Carter were talking easily. He had Instructed his chauffeur to drive about for a little before taking Joyce home. "So you like this being a modern young woman with an apartment,” he said. "Pretty well,” Joyce replied. "'We might vacate it very soon, as my roommate is leaving for New York to stay Sunday and I don’t know whether l will like it alone or not.” “That worries me,” said Carter lightly. “I’m afraid you'll get so lonesome that you’ll up and get married some day when I’m not around.” "And if you were around,” Joyce challenged. "I’ll keep you from getting lonesome,” he said, laying his hand over hers for a moment. “Are. you comMrs. Fitz-Simons’ dinner this week?” “I don’t see how I can,” said Joyce. "This is my week to work late and I don’t like to ask for time off to go.” “I’m sorry, for I had counted on having you there. If you find that you can arrange it, will you let me know? I'm not going to engage myself with anyone else for that evening in the lio-ie that something will turn up to free you,” Carter answered. They talked for a little longer and then Carter dropped Joy at the apartment. . khe ran lightly up the steps taking her key from her purse as she went. Gladys was looking at a pile of clothing stacked on her bed. "Don’t believe I'll take much of this,” she said. “With that fifty thousand I can get a whole new outfit. Swell clothes help you get a stage job too, quicker'n anything else —except a good juicy scandal.” Now that she was really determined to .return to her old life, Gladys became animated and the sadness which had attracted Joy so much at first disappeared entirely, leaving in its place a pertness which would take Gladys a long way
on the road she had chosen, but gave Joyce a feeling of irritation. For Gladys had given Joyce much advice about her affairs, the most important of which was to marry Davey at once. “You see me going back to this dancing game," said Gladys. "You think it's all fun and a good time. But ten years from now I’d rather be frying potatoes and spanking the baby than worrying over the wrinkles that’s coming into my face.” The next mornjng Joyce woke with the feeling that something important hung over her head. “If it's the letter I ought to write Deke that’s waked me up I wish it had let me sleep," she thought grumpily. "No it Isn't, it's the date with Scanny.” “I do just get myself mixed up with more people. Scanny this noon. Mrs. Maltby tomorrow, Mrs. FitzSimons’ party that I can’t go to, worse luck, tomorrow night and my old ladies on Friday. I never do have any time for myself any more.” She thought about the reading to the old ladies with real pleasure. There were always several girls out there when she went out. They read to varied groups of the Inmates of the home, or at the bedsides of those who were unable to be up, and then foregathered in .the little clubroom for tea, and cigarets and gossip. Joyce did not realize then how exclusive the little circle was, nor how powerful an influence Franky's friendship for her was. Now she brought some order Into the chaos of the apartment and sat down to write to Deke. His letters came frequently and were always gay and intimate, though never long. She picked up the last one. "Joy-girl—Don’t you like that name? It must be very nice to be called a Joygirl Instead of a joykiller. That’s what I feel like tonight. I’ve got to study for the first time since coming up this year. Latin? English? Nope, some secret society rules and formula to use when we initiate some candidates m a day or so” .... and so on foi several pages. Joy nibbled the end of her pen There was no inspiration in Deke's letter. “Absence may make the heart grow fonder,” Joy thought, “but it doesn’t make it easier to write letters. I hate writing, anyhow.” But she set to work and wrote her letter. “Dear Deke: "Yes. I like being called Joy-girl. But I guess it requires your personal inspiration for me to do any very great joy-spreading. I just can’t write letteis and I wish you were coming back to stay If only to save me having to write to you. "Gladys is going to leave Sunday for New York and I find I am rather glad. She is very anxious to be gone. "Mrs. Fiez-Simons Is giving a party Thursday night and I won’t get to go because I have to work. Carter Deland asked to take me, too. "I haven’t seen my father for • nearly two weeks, but I’m going to try to this coming Sunday. Oh, yes, I’m going to read to a Mrs. Maltby, I’ll have a lot to tell you about her when you get back. I’m glad you’re coming home Christmas. Be sure to let me know exactly when. "As ever, "JOY.” She sealed this effort and took It down to mail. There was a light snow and she walked briskly to get warm. At the hotel she found Miss Scanlon too busy to talk to her for a few minutes so she wandered out in, the lobby. Leaning against a pillar was Hop, the detective. "Hello,” he said. "How do you do?” Joyce managed more cordially than she would have believed possible. "Anything new?” he asked. Joyce shook her bead. . lie closer to her. "See here, Miss Daring,” be said, “I don’t want to pry, but have you heard anything from that fellow Butch lately?” "No. I haven’t, Mr. Hopkins.” "Well, I got a tip that he’s back in this neck of the woods. If you ever get a look at him, or even think you do, you tell me. Because I think he knows where your mother went to.” And Hop shook his bead up and down to carry conviction. Joyce felt the blood rush to her

I cheeks. She had never for a mo- ! ment connected Butch and her mother. Now the idea presented all manner of possibilities. She had withdrawn her offer of a reward and was finding her thought of her mother growing more and more rernote. Hop’s words brought her resolution to find her mother once more uppermost in her mind. She assured him she would tell him of anything suspicious she observed a nd went back to the board to talk to Miss Scanlon. \ "We’ve been working out anew schedule of work here for the busy winter months, Joy,” said the supervisor. "I want to try anew relief trick for the busy afternoon hours, twelve to eight or eight-thirty, depending on how busy you are. We’re putting in another pay station in the lobby and are going to pass all the pay lonk distance calls through Miss Gibbons since she is our most experienced operator, and all the local calls through this new desk. "I’ve been wondering if you would take over the local pay station work with alternate Sundays and Saturdays off, working each day from twelve to eight or thereabouts with your off time around five. I can allow you two dollars a week more pay and there is always a good chance for tips, theater tickets and so on out there.” Joyce thought about It for a moment. It meant never being able to go out to dinner early in the evening. On the fcther hand she could sleep late every morning. Then she remembered something. "When could I start this' new program?”'she asked. "As soon as you want to. Tomorrow,” said Miss Scanlon. ‘‘Then I’ll be glad to take It,” said Joyce, beaming. To herself she added, "I can go to the concert with Carter now.” TOMORROW: Hrr flrt nppumnw in society.
