QUEER WAGE OF COLLEGIANS •LISTING ENGLISH Jargon Filled With Expressions No Dictionary Defines. Bu United Press LOS ANGELES, April I.—That anomaly of.modern civilization—the collegian—who has gained fame through his flaming sartorial afflictions is off on another tangent, this time to offer a queer jargon that is rapidly displacing campus discourse in English, Those pedagogues who have dedicated their efforts and lives to the study of lexicology frankly admit their Inability to trace or offer any reason for the trend toward “English” as “she is spoke” in some of the higher institutions of learning. However, the collegian sees nothing atrange in the tact that a "giraffe” is a "creature who spoons—one who necks.” “Campus Cant” That Roget's Thesaurus is most Incomplete is evidenced by the collection of “Campus Cant’V compiled at the University of Southern California for the benefit of less intellectual groups. If potential lenders of State and business are heard to glibly refer to a “Powder House Fluff” they do not meajj dynamite in the strict sense of word, but refer to a sorority gi fflMAkewisc a “Tong” is a frateinit^Wouse. S girl is full of life and animu tion she is a “fever frau” and a dream # girl is a “hot-house bowI wow.” Dn tlie other hand a “pop r eyed pansy” or “green eyes” refer to a young woman who lacks charm. A co-ed may be stylpd as a “butter and egg fry,” meaning that she is a social queen. On other occasions she is known as “lolleos,” “cloud,” “wows” or “tin-pans.” Some Samples To “junk” is to stop and to “recognize the sore” means to understand. “Pigskins” refers to football players. “Step-ins” is a cut down flivver. “Pussyfoot” indicates the collegian is attempting to make a date. “Hijacker” is one who steals another's girl friend. “Hanging a goober” refers to the art of osculation. “Plush” indicates one is stylish and to "pipe the flight” is to watch the parade of co-eds. The list is unending and Webster's well known catalogue of information will undoubtedly need revision if the present trend continues. CHORUS GIRLS HIT OF BRAZIL TOWN ** ,Lt!m-Americans Devise Odd Definition. Bn United Pres; RIO DE JANEIRO, April I. The great novelty and fascination for the Rio De Janeiro theatergoers i are at present “girls,” American and j English chorus girls and quite a number of Latin girls, who are doing fairly well as imitators of their American and English sisters. Things started for the box office recently whence troup of American chorus girls arrived in Rio after n stand of a few months in Buenos Aires’ vaudeville houses. The troupe was advertised locally as “As nove 'Girls' Americans.” the "girls” being left in the original English. The word “girls” was soon coined by the Brazilians to mean, as one newspaper put it, “Anything young and feminine, happy and knowing a few words In English, almost naked and almost pretty, exceptionally nice, and to be seen, heard and delighted in.”
