ARE WE LIVING IN AGE OF SILK? A MOTHER THINKS SO

‘I Wish You’d Write Something of the Almost Criminal Extravagance of Young Girls Today,’ She Writes Martha Lee. By Martha Lee "My daughters spend almost every cent they earn on their clothes,” Avails a mother. I “But they’re like all the rest of their girl friends, and I Bksh you would Avrite something about the almost criminal exof the young folks of today.”

any mother must realize thwt there is a competition in the business world of today that demands that a girl look bright and snappy as well as being able to do her work well. It’s the realization of this, her desire to get ahead, perhaps far more lhan>vanity, that causes the average business girl to "dress better for everyday than I ever did for best,’’ as this mother continues. Os course the girls make unwise purchases—lots of them. But help them, mothers. Quit harping about their extravagance. Help them budget their salaries. them about materials and quality, and how to buy according to their needs, rather than in response to a fleeting foolish impulse. Too Much Silk Dear Martha Lee: T have read some of your advice which I think is often helpful but I have never seen anything’ relative to the extravagance of the young folks which seems to me is terrible. Silk. silk, silk, is all they know and my own girls who are, howe, ver, no different from the rest, dress better for every day that I ever did for best. Silk hose may not be so bad. but when it comes to having every garment of that material, it’s almost criminal I think, and no wonder the girls spend practically every

cent on tlieir clothes, trying to keep up with the vanity of the times. AN OLD-FASHIONED MOTHER. Os course you are justified In thinking somewhat as you do. but the trite saying, "Times have changed and so must the customs,’’ applies to the silk garment question. A girl can scarcely dress markedly different from others of her sex. Every pendulum of custom swings just so far. Perhaps cotton instead of silk will become fashionable some time. Then watch the girls change into it! Want Her to Wait Dear Martha Lee: I am a young man engaged to a girl IP that I have gone with for a year and a half. Her parents are not opposed to her marrying me. but want her to wait. This sems so hard to do. On "date" nights, we ueually play cards with her ;>arrnts and brother, some times we go to shows or such things as basketball games and when we get to talking about having to wait, we both get very blue. I have a good position and am saving money. Do you think we should wait. Once we planned to elope, but decided not to. WONDERING DICK. I should think you are not justified in waiting very long, as finances do not seem to stand in the way. Have you told her parents how opposed you are to waiting? Do so, and make it strong. Perhaps they will relent. His Wife Deserted Him Dear Martha Lee: 1 am coming to you with my misfortune. My wife has deserted me because I protested at her running around to shows with unmarried girls. AVe had a nice little hora and we were happy, but Imr tolks never liked me. One week after she left me. my wife filed suit for divorce. I should tell you that this was her fourth marriage. However. I dearly love her. but do you think it is any use? She is only 27. LONESOME HUSBAND. I’m afraid your wife has formed the habit of clearing out when obstacles to her will arise. Four marriages at 27 certainly indicate that she would be too hard for the ordinary man to hold. If she would leave you over such a trifling matter as you indicate, I believe you’d have the same experience over and over. Better try to forget her. She Is Lonesome I>ar Martha Lee: I am a girl. 17. I worked in Indianapolis, but have been called home to take care of my smaller brothers and sisters, as mother had to leave them on account of illness. This means I must stay by myself almost all the time, as the children go to school. I ret so lonesome. I don’t know what to do. What could you suggest? FARMERETTE. HOUSEHOLD SUGGESTIONS

CARE OF CLOTHES Clothes hangers and shoe trees increase the life of their wearers. Care in putting away is worth more than pressing. CREAMY COCOA To make smooth cocoa, add a tiny bit of cornstarch and sugar and bring to boil in water before adding hot milk. SCREEN TIME Be sure to look over your screens and get them mended and in place before the first flies appear. BEEHIVE STITCHING Yokes of wraps are sometimes trimmed with beehive stitching, giving the effect of lattice work confining the fullness. NO BRIMS Hats for the very young woman have no brim, but often sport a flared turn back set about three inches above the face. MANY YOKES Shoulder and hip yokes promise to become very popular by summer, with fullness below, to soften the silhouette. CLEAR PAINT Before washing paint, wipe the dry dust off with a clean cloth. It will prevent streaking and muddy appearance when dry.

Saint and Sinner By AMNE AUSTIN

After the luncheon recess, Churchill bombarded Mary Kearney with questions concerning Cherry’s costume. And then as a climax, he demanded: “You didn’t stop at the dresser and pick up an engagement ring there, did you?" Suddenly through the clamor of legal bickering, Mary Kearney burst into loud weeping, fumbled in her handbag, drew out something and flung it upon the floor. “There’s the old ring.” she sobbed, while Banning's face turned toward her a moment too late, froze into a mask of horror. “I —I never did have a diamond ring and —and I was engaged and I wanted my girl friends to think my boy friend had give it to me, but I didn’t dass to wear it, I didn’t dass. Oh, I wish I’d never been born!" “That’s all,” said Churchill triumphantly. Meanwhile Bob and Faith were late for the afternoon session. “I want to go to iny office to see if there is any important mail, dear." Bob said to Faitli as be swung his car away from the quiet little tearoom where they had lunched. “You've been neglecting your business shamefully, poor darling," Faith told him tenderly. ’’Here's Lincoln Park just ahead. Drive past dear. There's just a chance that our phantom cripple is out begging today and we’ll get a look at him at last.” Bob obediently followed her directions, while Faith leaned out of the car straining her eyes to catch a glimpse of the much-sought old man whose footprints so strangely matched those which Bob had found

under his uncle’s bedroom window the night of the murder. "By George! There he is!” Bob exclaimed. “At least we’ve founp a cripple and by all accounts it’s old Phil the beggar himself. I’m going to decide what to do." Faith shuddered slightly as her eager eyes studied the twisted stooping. dirty, gray-haired old cripple, who peered through smoked glasses at the crowds which streamed past his outstretched box of lead pencils. He was leaning against the lamppost at one of the four entrances to the park, his body so contorted that it was impossible even for Bob, hardened as he was to the sordid sights of the city, to repress a shiver of pity. Old Phil, if it was Phil, had evidently suffered a stroke of paralysis, which had cramped his left foot and knee grotesquely, twisted his hip and withered his left arm. which hung useless from his shoulder, his head rested against it. His long gray hair was lank with grease, his unhealthy face deeply lined under its crust of sore scales and dirt. “Poor old devil!” Bob whispered, a little shamefaced. “So that’s the ‘murderer’ we’ve been tracking! Pretty poor sleuths, aren’t we, honey? He couldn’t kill a cat, much less wield that heavy Chinese vase and crack a skull with it.” “Bob, please get out and give him something,” Faith pleaded. “I feel like we owe him something for having suspected him." She watched Bob as he obeyed her, was acutely proud of the tall, splendid young body that looked so strong and graceful as it swung up to the grotesque wreck of a man. The beggar bobbed his head with thanks as

The secret of the chic of this latest teboux creation lies in having the lat follow the hair-line in its snugness.

Hathaway dropped a large coin into the pencil box. “Why, Bob. what’s the matter?” Faith asked, when Bob was again at the wheel, his face stern and thoughtful. “It's Phil, all right. His metal license tag is hanging on a. dirt cord around his neck, and the number is the same. Faith, I’m not satisfied yet to drop this matter. AVhy should the old bird be such a mystery? Look!” Faith looked, and saw the crippled beggar beckoning to a taxi which was cruising past in search of a fare. The driver of the cab alighted, and almost lifted the horribly twisted body into the tonneau of the machine. “I’m going to follow that cab and try to solve one phase of the mystery at least.” Bob said grimly. "Odd

that a beggar should travel by taxi.” “But, dear,” Faith protested, “he’s too crippled to walk far. He has to get about somehow. But it is odd that he should leave his post at this time of day.” “I believe he recognized me as the chap who had been on his trail and decided to beat it,” Bob told her rapidly, as he shifted gears. In the maze of traffic at the corner of Main and Columbus, where Faith’s friend, Traffic Policeman Callahan, was on duty, Bob’s car was held up, while the taxicab he was pursuing had crossed the street just ahead of the signal. “Memorize the number of that cab!” Bob commanded Faith grimly. “I have,” Faith answered, the blood of excitement in her cheeks. “Oh, there’s the signal I saw him going up Main street. Let’s take a chance on finding it again.” Twice during the next few blocks Faith and Bob were sure they had caught sight of the cab. It proved a real will o' the wisp, but at last about ten blocks from the corner of Main and Columbus, a clear half block granted them a convincing view of the pursued cab, which, as they drew up close behind it, pulled up to the curb before a tall office building. They looked at each other with blank eyes, sick with disappointment when they saw that the passenger who alighted was a briskly stepping, tall, middle-aged business man. He paid his fare and passed through the storm doors of the building’s entrance. (To be Continued) Next—Bob makes an astonishing discovery when he follows the mid-dle-aged business inan. She Got Rid of Those Two Bad Mornings

Menstruation is a perfect natural process, but the painful part is NEEDLESS. Long study has absolutely conquered menstrual pain. Science now offers women reliable and complete relief—in a simple, utterly harmless tablet called midol. This newest achievement of the laboratory has nothing to do with drastic, habit-forming drugs that kill pain by benumbing the whole system! Midol acts directly on the organs affected by menstruation, and nowhere else. Yet relief and absolute comfort come in five to seven minutes! So, why have a twinge of pain—feel “low” or even uncomfortable? Or take anything to depress the heart or upset the system? All drug stores have midol tn a thin aluminum box that tucks in purse or pocket—for 50 cents. MiM Talus Pain Off the Calendar
