RDM CAPITAL [QUIETS DOWN TO TRANQUIL LEVEL Economic Pressure Curtails Dancing and DrinkingGambling Increases. Bn United Press MEXICO CITY, March 25—Economic conditions have so changed the night life of Mexico City that within the comparatively short space of two years what was a capital famed for its carefree gayety has become a city so modest in its diversions as to approach puritanic standards. Where two years ago four more or less pretentious cabarets, two or which offered American jazz, were flourishing, today only one remains open in the city. Just outside the city proper another gives week-end entertainment. What was the most popular cabaret in the city two months ago had an American orchestra. But local musicians unions had something to say about the money being paid the American boys and the result was a termination of their contract, followed almost immediately by the closing of the cabaret. American residents who enjoy dancing much prefer the more spirit--48 jazz music to the slow and appaless rhythmical tunes evolved by the native musicians. Hence, the closing of their favorite cabaret has reduced their attendance at dance halls to a minimum. Turns to Gambling .Mexico is following the traditional course in turning to gambling during the period of economic stress. Until ju?t recently three protected gambling houses were in full swing in the cit;y with roulette wheels, baccarat and poker tables, and several tables of! a Spanish card game similar to the American monte. One manager has now been given an exclusive right to operate, it is understood, seven thousand pesos gold for the privilege against the bid of five thousand by a rival. This one gambling house is in the heart of the city, only a block and a half from police headquarters. It is the first time in years that open gambling has been permitted and hundreds nightly visit the tables. Taxi drivers quarrel over the privilege of driving the patrons home at Itho end of their play. For six months of the year the game known in Mexico as fronton, which is the local name for the Spanish j’alai, is running. It has hundreds of patrohs from the Spanish colony in addition to the native contingent and the betting on this interesting and exciting game runs into thousands the three nights a week it is played. The players have just left for the season in Havana -and Spanish towns. Drinking Lessened the barrooms (cantinas) arc feeling the pinch of economic pressure and except for a few operating

in the heart of the city are making little more than enough to pay their rentals. Several of the more popular ones remain open until one o’clock in the morning, evelen o’clock being the closing hour for many with cheaper licenses. Theaters and movie houses are still fairly well attended. The Catholic boycott against the government’s religious regulations for a time tended to decrease the attendance in both theater and movie, %ut a warning spirit among the faithful has brought the attendance nearer to norhial. Opera, such as once flourised in Mexico, is no more. Restaurants and cases have also felt the change in economic conditions and the excellent cuisines that prevailed in Mexico City years ago are now only memories. Some of the smaller cases afford the better menus, with venison, quail and duck in season, and at prices amazingly low. popcorn" WORTH $2,000 Last Contribution of Luther Burbank Saved—Highly Valued By KKA Service SACRAMENTO, Cal., March 25. “Luther Burbank popcorn,” big garnet grains that pop into large snowwhite puffs, was one of the last gifts of the famous plant scientist before his death. So rare is this popcorn that a single hatful, representing all there is in the world, is valued at more than $2,000, and is kept stored in a steel safe at the scientist's home in Santa Rosa. Burbank’s popcorn was propagated from a few seeds off an ear given to him by a collector 'in South America. Take salts for a KIDNEY BACKACHE Drink Lots of Water All Day Long to Keep Kidneys Flushed Too much rich food forms acids which excite and overwork the kidneys in their efforts to filter it from the system. Flush the kidneys occasionally to relieve them like you relieve the bowels, removing acids, waste and poison, else you may feel a dull misery in the kidney region, sharp pains in the back or sick headache, dizziness, the stomach sours, tongue is coated, and when the weather is bad you have rheumatic twinges. To help neutralize these irritating acids and flush off the body’s urinous waste, begin drinking water. Also get about four ounces of Jad Salts from any pharmacy, take a tablespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys may then act fine and bladder disorders disappear. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia and has been used for years to help clean and stimulate sluggish kidneys and stop bladder irritation. Jad Salts is inexpensive and makes a delightful effervescent lithia water drink which millions of men and women take now and then to help prevent serious kidney and bladder disorders. By all means, drink lots of good water every day. —Advertisement.
