CRIMINAL COURT LOSING FAVOR OF ‘HANGERS-ON’ As Spring Zephyr’s Waft Through Window, Non-Descript a ‘Attaches’ Break Winter-Long Hibernation.

With the advent of spring •weather One of Indianapolis’ greatest “indoor sports’* is losing patronage. Criminal Court, on the second floor o| the courthouse, presided over by Judge James A. Collins, is one of trhe* favorite loafing places during thel winter months, but as soon as the first sign of no-overcoat weather appears the place gradually becomes vacant. Throughout the cold months some persons actually hibernate in the courtroom, seemingly interested in the proceedings. Warmth Draws Them Actually not many of them know what ft is all about, but come there for the warmth. After a time, when the first spell of sleepiness passes by, and the warmth begins to put a bit of vitality in the onlookers, some of them perk up and take notice. After a winter’s occupancy, some of the keener observers are able to predict the moves of the defense and prosecution. More interesting, probably, than their presence, is their appearance and actions. Every description of person is to be seen. Some look as though they once knew the pleasures of good living, others seem to be just born and bred loafers. Day by day, at various hours, they drift into

UTS UNHARMED BY EXHAUST GAS Monoxide Fumes From Auto Fail to Kill Rodents. Bv United Press OMAHA, March 25.—Monoxide gas may be dangerous for human beings, but as a rat exterminator it jis worthless, take it from Charles' ivranda, gentleman farmer. JlKranda, who operates a ten-acre farm as a sideline near here, recently caught four mammoth rats which had been bothering his chickens. Hooking around for a humane was to kill them he thought of the monoxide, gas method. Tying a sack around three sides of the trap, he hung it on the exhaust pipe of his automobile, closed his garage tightly and turned on the motor. He left the motor of his car run for half an hour. At the end of that time Kranda threw open the garage door, shut off the engine and prepared to bury the dead rats. When he approached the cage he found they were very much alive. They tried to break out of the cage to get at him and so ferocious were their actions that Kranda’s German police dog became alarmed and beat a hasty retreat.

One sees sneers and looks of disgust spread over countenances when they find the courtroom jammed by witnesses or principals in a case, leading no chairs vacant for them. Another. disappointing point In their earnest endeavor, is when the court docket is cleared for the day and no cases are set for trial. However, this daunts but a few. The others come in and dream anyway. A murder trial Is their most sought-for pleasure. -They listen to hours of testimony and evidence, commenting one to another on the actions of the attorneys in the case, the defendant and whether or not the jury is being impressed. Their Big Moment Then comes their shining period. The jury leaves the room to deliberate the case. The gentlemen of leisure immediately dash to the corridors, and many, sniping cigaret remains, lean contemplatively against the wall, discussing phases of the case and phrophesying the outcome. , When the jury returns the verdict, a pandemonium of argument breaks forth, each move in the case being battled over as though it meant life or death to the debaters. But now that spring is l*fere, the crowd moves frequently from the excessive warmth of the room and into the streets and lawn about the courthouse where problems of international interest and politics are disputed.
