YACHT FOR SKY AND WATER USE DISPLAYS MERIT Product of German Firm Built Mostly of Metal— Can Rise Off Sea. By United Press BERLIN, March 18.—A flying yacht is the latest innovation to be marketed by the Rohrbach Metal Aeroplane Company. During recent test-journeys, spectators were amazed to see a schooner-like conveyance, rigged with foresails, a mainsail and removable duraluminum masts, suddenly dismantled and transformed into a flying-machine, rising from the water and soaring beyond the horizon. The new winged sailing craft is equipped With all necessary aviation instruments, altimeter, tachometer, clinometers, and compass and, in contrast to other types which are generally provided with main and reserve control, the Rohlbach flying boat supplies a fixed individual control for each of the two pilots. Besides masts and sails the sea equipment of the flying vessel consists of ground anchor, drift anchor, ropes and swimming packets. In order to avoid the big expense for large slip-ways commonly needed for airplanes, a special type of beach trolley has been designed and constructed for the Rohrbach flying yacht. This contrivance comprises a pair of floating wheels fitted to the wings of the machine. The boat is thus capable of “taxying” under its own power on land and water. Comfortably upholstered armchairs and receptacles for baggage are fitted above the seats. All passengers face forward in the direction of flight. A wide aisle between the rows of seats ensures commodious walking along the entire cabinlength. Strap-hangers are fastened to the ceiling as a convenience for passengers leaving their seats and safety straps are provided for each chair. A lavatory is adjoined to the stern of the cabin. Danger from fire on the flying yacht is reduced to a minimum through the all-metal construction. The machine can easily be flown even on 50 per cent of the engine output. Failure of both engines conjures up no serious peril on water as the sailing equipment provides a substitute motive force. Any two compartments can be flooded without causing the vessel to sink; the boat and floats are supplied with water-tight bulkheads and the doors of the bulkheads are equipped with a quick-closing device.

$5,000,000 FOR POWER Expenditure by Canada for Harnessing Water Last Year. By United Press OTTAWA. Ont., March 18.—Canada spent $5,000,000 on harnessing water power for industrial purposes in 1926, according to a report Issued by Hon. Charles Steward, minister of the interior. “Completion of new hydro-electric plants added 266,000 more horse power to Canada’s water power development last year,” said Steward’ report, “bringing the total power installation up to 4,556,000 horse power. “Quebec led in developing power with 168,000 horse power of 60 per cent of the total installation. Completion of two plants by the Gatineau Power Company at Chelsea and Farmers Rapids on the Gatineau river was the province’s principal contribution.” HUNTERS USE KITES PIERRE, S. D., March 18.—Taking a leaf from “Bed Time Tales,” hunters near here are employing kites in rabit hunting. The kites are drawn over the territory being worked, frightening the animals before them until they enter the ambush of the marksmen. The bunnies mistake the for large hawks it is believed. Anyway hunters are reaping small fortunes from the sale of hides gained in this way.

DR. W. B. CALDWELL AT THE AGE OF 8

While Dr. W. B. Caldwell of Monticello, 111., a practicing physician for 47 years, knew that constipation was the curse of advancing age, he did not believe that a “purge” or “physics” every little while was necessary. To him, it seemed cruel that so many constipated old people had to be kept constantly “stirred up” and half sick by takiing cathartic pills, tablets, salts, calomel and nasty oils. In Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup Pepsin he discovered a laxative which helps to “regulate” the bowels of bid folks. Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin not only causes a gentle, easy bowel movement but each dose helps to strengthen the bowel muscles, short-

DOGS MED BY RIDINGIN AUTOS Claim Made by Teacher in Veterinary School. Bu United Press PHILADELPHIA, March 18.— Overindulgence In “joy-riding” by dogs whose owners have automobiles, has resulted in epidemics of conjunctivitis and rhinitis, it has been revealed through experiments at the University of Pennsylvania’s Veterinary School. Conjunctivitis, Professor William Lentz, of the veterinary faculty explained, is inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eye socket, and rhinitis is inflammation of the membranes of the nasal passages. Botb diseases attack motoring canines who expose themselves to a constant rush of air for long periods. Dr. Lentz said. Boston bulls, Pekingese and spaniels, with their large, protruding eyes and flat noses, are far more susceptible to both diseases than are their long-nose brethren, such as the setter, collie, and police dog. The ordinary mongrel, without motoring friends, is virtually immune from the diseases, Dr. Lentz declared.
