MINISTERS FROWN ON NEW BOOK Clergy Here Passive on Sinclair Lewis’ ‘Elmer Gantry.’ Sinclair Lewis’ newest book, “Elmer Gantry,” will have little sale among Indianapolis ministers, It appears from' a survey today. The book singles out a minister, Gantry, who begins with small town pastorate and becomes a “go-get-ting” evangelist. Misrepresenting After experiences with a woman evangelist Gantry develops into a “beefy, lying, alcoholic libertine, in love with two things, publicity and pretty women," according to one reviewer. Characterizing the book as “grossly misrepresenting,” Rev. W. Fifer, pastor of the Central Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, said: “Sinclair Lewis has chosen a type of man who represents about one-half of one per cent of those who make up the ministry. Fiction Slander “This abnormal character makes the whole ministry bear the brunt of the attack. Well informed people Will dismiss Lewis’ picture as a bit of fiction slander.” Other Indianapolis ministers said they were not familiar with the book or that its. author ’a radical tendencies would override any merit the book might otherwise possess.
