SYNOPSIS Joyce Daring: is put s on her own” when her parents separate. She gets a job <pn the telephone switchboard of a .hotel, and meets Carter Delan l, a wealthy haichelor. through Heiiry Doaoon, a college boy who is in love with hen. Their love idyll is rudely interrupted w ien they narrowly escape being run down hy a high ppwtered automobile while driving in the country. At the wheel, thety .recognize "Butch” Seltzer, a grtnsfcer, and beside him a woman whom Deacon believes is Joyce’s moth bo. Shaken by their escape, Joyce and her companion go soberly to' dinner. CHAPTER NV | Tragedy J Joy and Deke dined ‘at a road house. “Go somewhere to riancF?” Deke asked when the meal was over and he sat smoking a cigaret over his discreetly doctored ginger ale. Joy was drinking coffee, after Wrinkling her nose over a taste of DeWe’s high ball. “Oh, I don’t know,” said Joyce. "I’m pretty tired and I’ve got to be I on the board tomorrow at sewen. I> think we'd better go home. It’/ eight now. Go slowly enough a/id we can have a visit and get imeAinbed by ten o’clock.” "Sensible girl,” said Deke. A faint moon siiowed them, the road as they turned away from the inn. Deke drove silently for /a little time. Then he tightened hits arm about Joy’s shoulder. “What do you think of lovje. Joy of my heart?” he asked. "I think it’s wonderful —frorfL what I’ve read,” said Joyce demumly. "Smarty!” Deke gave her a little shake. "I think I’m going ho kiss you for that." He drew up* in the shadow of a tree. “Do you imind Joy, darling?” Joy was trembling. She wanted Deke to kiss her, and jfet she wanted to be a thousand milets away. "I won’t,” he said huskAly. “I won’t unless you want me to. Tell me, Joy.” ‘“I do want you to —* Dieke made a sudden movement to crush her to him. "Wait, wait,” she struggled in his arms, “but Deke,” he had relaxed his hold and she to** his face in her hands, "but Deke, I want It to mean something real I kiss you. And I’m not sure ncfw whether it’s you—or just being yojung antd a moon and everything that'makes'me feel this way.” She felt suddenly alone as Deke leaned to’start the car. This was what she had asked him to do, and yet there was a certain unpleasing abruptness about it. The engine began to purr. “Sure?” asked Deke, looking at her preparatory to starting the bright Harmon homeward. Then fate intervened. There was the roar of a motor. A huge low hung car stopped just ahead of them. Before they could recover from their surprise a masked figure stepped from the car holding a gun, trained on the bright Marmon. “Hands up. Out of the car, single file!” the orders were barked In a manner that made Joy’s blood run cold. “Do what he says.” Deke commanded her. "It’s the only safe thing now. Keep your head." He elevated his arms and followed Joyce, her hands held high, to the road. The bandit said nothing for a moment. Then he spoke to Joyce. "Get into the car,” he said, nodding to his machine, the motor of which was still running. "I’m going to put this guy out of business for a while, and it won’t be a pretty sight for a lady to see. Up in front Quick about it,” as Joy wavered a moment. “Do what he says,” came Deke’s command again. Shaking, Joy opened the door of the bandit car. “Joy, Joy!” At the whisper Joy almost screamed. She lo iked, at the back seat, where the soun l had come from. Whose' voice was calling her? ’ Quick, Joy. It’s Motherdear. Untie me. Hurry, before it is too late.” Joy had the sensation of a sleepwalker in the midst of a nightmare as she leaned toward the back seat and began to fumble with a rope that bound her mother’s hands.

From the road came the sound of an argument. “I am quite aware that you have no wish to add minder to your crime of kidnaping,” Deke was saying cooly enough. “I ain’t gonna kill you this time,” agreed the bandit, “but I may some day if you don’t quit chasing after my girl.” "Then I have the pleasure of addressing one Mr. Butch Seltzer. Come now, Mr. Seltzer, be a man. Put down that plaything you have in your hand and let’s fight it out as two knights listing for the hand of a fair lady'should.” “None of your lip,” muttered Butch. “'You do what I say. Got a knife?” “I haiAj never been known to be without.4i knife,” said Deke, fencing for timp. I have always considered it part of a gentleman’s equipment when Jie goes out to meet the world. In tlte future I shall add a gun and a biteglar alarm to my personal belongings—” up,” growled Butch. "Turn your back.” Deke obeyed. Butch pressed the Revolver between Deke’s shoulder blades and began to search for the knife. Finding it he held It between Ills teeth and opened, It with one hand. "Now,” he ordered. "Three steps ahead of me. One hand up, permanent. Cut those tires on that damn car of yours.” Deke obeyed, too conscious of the gun immediately behind him to try to take advantage of possession of the knife. Slash! He heard the air hiss out of one front tire. He made slow work of slashing the second front tire, in spite of Butch’s urging. He had begun the work of slashing the life tire when a movement from the car in front caught his eye. Was Joyce mad? What could she hope to do against an armed man? A second figure appeared behind the first. There couldn’t be two Joyces! Mrs. Daring! The foremost figure stopped softly, then broke into a run. “Look out!” Deke hardly knew whom lie was warning. The woman was clinging to Butch. Deke sprang forward. There was an explosion, a woman’s shrill scream. Deke saw Mrs. Daring fall to the road. Then he was on top of Butch. He buried his teeth In the bandit’s right arm. "Grab the gun!” he yelled to Joyce. He saw her stoop and pick up the re volver. A savage kick from Bu!ch knocked tlie breath from him. Dimly he felt his enemy rise. In a daze he heard Joyce saying, “Go away. Go away. I’ll shoot you if you don’t” She was brandishing the gun at Butch. Deke sat up trying to get his breath. He saw Butch grin and move back toward his automobile. "Take care of the old lady and wait for me,” he said. “Let your fancy feller take her to the hospital. I’ll he back for you. And there’ll be enough friends along with me to put the k. o. on him and the old lady too If you try to double cross me. Hear what I say? Send the other two on and nobody’ll get hurt. Try to make a getaway with them and there’ll be two dead ones. Tonight’s our night. Understand?” Still fighting for breath, Deke heard Butch drive away. Joyce knelt by her mother as the car disappeared down the road. “Joy,” he gasped. "Joy!” She turned to him. “Is my mother dead?” she, asked with a quiet despair. "We’ll see.” He rose painfully to his feet. From the bright Marmon he took a flashlight. Mrs. Daring lay in a heap, blood oozing from her side. “Help me lift her,” said Deke. Joyce took her mother’s head. There was no sound from the still figure to tell them whether she was living or not. They laid her on the back seat. "Now listen, Joyce,” he said solemnly. “We’ve got to get your mother to a hospital right away. I’ve three flat tires. That means rough riding and the faster we go the more the danger of liter bleeding to death from the jolts. But you heard what Butch said. We’ve got to get awfiy quick. Hold your mother tight to the back seat. Don’t let anything jar her to the floor. You’d better kneel and brace your feet against the seat. We’ll start in a. moment.” He went quickly to the back of the Marmon. There was a hissing of air as he let the fourth the down. "Ride evener that way,” he muttered. Then he climbed in and turned the nose of the crippled Marmon toward the main highway. "Make that and were safe,” he told himself.

A groan from the rear of the car told him that Mrs. Daring lived. The car gathered speed. Joyce braced herself and kept her mother from rolling from the seat by almost superhuman effort. In front Deke was jubilant. Five minutes more and they would be on the main road. The main road and safety. Fifty, fifty-five, sixty. He held stoutly to the steering wheel, jarred this way and that by the wild jumps of the car. The road! To one side where the dirt road joined the main road lay a deep shadow, cast by a clump of trees. Down the main road appeared a bright light. The light of a speeding motor. Deke turned the Marmon on two wheels and grated to a stop in the shadow. He switched out the lights. "Quiet,” he commanded of the back seat. The racing motor and bright headlight tore on. swung around the corner of tlie road, passed the darkened Marmon and toward the scene of the hold-up. Deke drew a long breath of relief. “Hold on Joy,” he said. “We’re safe now." , The going was easier on the main road. They were ten miles from the nearest hospital of any size. “I want to try to make Lakeside,” he called back to Joyce. "I know the resident surgeon there. He’ll help us get in without so much red tape or too many questions.” The admission clerk left them. Deke sat on the hard bench by Joyce. Neither spoke. Once Deke took Joy's hand and held it for a few moments. It lay limp in his and he released it. At the hospital tlie admission clerk hurried Mrs. Daring to the surgery. "I’ll guarantee her bill,” Deke said, giving fcis name and address. “See that she has the best in the house and send for Dr. McDonald, will you please?" The clerk turned to make the entry. Joyce stared silent and white faced. Deke put out a hand to comfort her. He felt very tired and sore, weary and faint. This was getting too much for him. That kick in the stomach —Was that tall, tall girl before him, growing bigger and bigger, a girl named Joyce Daring?

"Joy,” he spoke her name in a far away questioning tone. Then he fell toward her. Joy’s cry brought a nurse.
