Winter Effects Disappearing on Most Roads of State
DRAGGING BRINGS MOST ROUTESTO NORMALSURFACES Main Highways Good for Motor Travel Northern Part Has Few Bad Spots. Dragging of the roads in various parts of the State have brought them in many places almost to normalcy, according tm reports of the Indiana State highvray commission. The northern part of the State is the only place where the recent wet weather effects are still noticeable. Result of the freezing during the ' last two months is seen in the northwest parts, where urisurfaced roads are prevalent. Bridge repairs have been completed over the White River on No. 46 and improvements have been made on the approaches to Putnamville ' overhead on No. 40. All the main routes are in good condition and maintenance is being rushed in places where breaks have I occurred in both surfaced and pavement highways.
The Tail Light By Swede Swanson
Bill Miller, proprietor of the Virginia Motor Sales, threw a chicken dinner the other night, with those tar-famed stars, Bob Taylor and Hernci>- Porter, in stellar roles. It seems that, during the ruckus, Hersey ate so fast that he turned his head suddenly and nearly wounded his ear _ with a forkful of food. Bob had finite a time getting used to drinking hot coffee out of the cup, but, all in all, he got away with it all right. Yes, all told, it was quite an eating contest. We failed to get the names of the winners. SPRING POETRY DEPT. (Or What Have You. Only two came through with spring, poems this week: Along the roads at the end of day, In our Chevrolet we wend our way. Beats the parlor, hope to say, And explains just how we get that way. —By Mr. Snyder. I visited some friends last spring. Although, the house smelled musty, The biggest, shock of all came when I found the bathtub dusty. —Written by the third mechanic at the Cverjhr.d garage. BUY FOR FUTURE, EXPERTWNG Engineer Advises Purchase of New Roadways. Bu \FA Service BUFFALO, March 16. Cities which are paying huge prices to extend and widen their ancient highway systems should profit by their experience and buy rights-of-way for future use at a comparatively low cost now, advises George C. Diehl, engineer of Erie County, New York. Recognizing that piecemeal remedies did not provide a solution to the traffic problem, the Erie county board of supervisors directed the county engineer to make a comprehensive study of traffic in all parts of the country. From this study there evolved the Greater Motorways System. The plans call for two connected series of widened and improved highways circling Buffalo from the Niagara River on the north t<s Lake Erie on the south. “Rights-of-way have been acquired on distant routes,” says Diehl, “where the work of constructing new highways or the widening of existing roads is not to be done for ten or fifteen years.” ILLINOIS PAVES ROADS Illinois now has 5,966 miles of completed hard roads in the State highway system. In addition, there are 1,947 miles of graded roads that will be raved by next year. MILLIONS FOR ROADS An estimated total of $75,000,000 will be spent during 1927 for California’s city, county and State highways, according to the engineering club of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
