BOY RUNS INTO RATH OF AUTO; , IS BADLY HURT Suffers Broken Collar Bone and Bruises; Woman Is Caught Between Cars. Ruuning from behind a street car, into the path of nn auto, Jack Kenna, 7, of 818 E. Twenty-First St., suffered a broken collar bone and head bruises. r*ollce said the auto that struck him was driven by Theodore Akthart, R. It. G. Box 12. The accident took place at 2000 College Ave. Oille De Strain and ills brother, George, both of 125 Bright St., wore recovering at their home today from injuries received Monday when their truck overturned at Union and Moris Sts. George was knocked unconscious.
Caught Between Autos Police say Miss Marion Phelps, 31, of 523 N. Garfield Ave., was injured in an unusual accident nt Highland Ave. and E. Washington St., late Monday. She suld she stopped her auto behind a car driven by Leo G. Terry, 335 S. Dearborn St., who had stopped to allow a street car to unload passengers. When the car started, Terry backed ills auto into Miss Phelps’ auto, police were told. Then she got out of her car and walked between <he two cars to get the license number, she told police, and Terry backed the auto again and wedged her between them. Police sent her home in the c.lty ambulance, injured about the legs and body. Terry explained his action by saying he was just learning to drive the auto.
Hurt in Sidecar Spill Turning the corner of Blcking and Delnwnre Sts. too short caused a motorcycle and sidecar driven by Fred Vogt, 58, of 415 N. Hamilton Ave., to turn over. POLITICAL FACTOR IN FORD TRIAL Senator Reed, Eyeing White House, Expected to Soften ( Jewish Issue. Timm Waxhinnton Rurrau, l.lii .Vctc York Avrniin WASHINGTON. March 18. Washington politicians have focused their attention this week on Senator James A. Reed’s defense in the Henry Ford libel suit and are thinking of him, and his performance in Detroit, in terms of his prospective candidacy for President. Congress adjourned with the Missourian taking himself seriously as a candidate, nlthough he refused to discuss tho movement which Missourians launched H> his behalf. His I actions the past, few months have indicated that the presidential talk -sounds pleasant to ills ears. He has been a more cautions and careful Jim Reed than heretobefore. Reed will receive a SIOO,OOO fee for his defense of Ford, it is reI ported, but in YVasliington today ids friends' are saying had he known when lie accepted the retainer that he soon would be getting honorable mention for the presidency, lie would not have accepted the foe. Ono hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money for a poor man, ns Reed is, but it is nothing in comparison to the YY liite House for nn ambitious man, as lie is also, ills friends say. Reed, it was known before he left I YVasliington, will try to soft-pedal the Jewish issue involved In Aaron Sapiro’s suit. Defended Jew# — / Throughout his career he has been i a champion of tolerance. Ten years ' ago ho delivered a speech before the Hebrew .Sheltering Society in New Yvrk praising the Jewish people, and Missouri Jews distributed It as a pamphlet. In the Senate recently ills reply to Senator Heflin's attack on the Catholics was regarded as notable oratory. Among the Jews linked with Sapiro in Ford’s magazine wua Bernard M. Baruch, long-time intimate friend and counsellor of the late Woodrow YVilson and the most prominent Democrtuie financial angel. Reed is not going to offend either Baruch or tlie humblest of Jews, lt is believed here, nor is he going to become a champion of intolerance. Ho is, however, going to defend Mr. Ford to tho utmost of his ability. But how will he defend Ford and dodge the Jewish Issue? That Is what the politician* aro asking. ftEVUE GROUP NAMED Committee to Sponsor Indiana University Production, March 25. Committees for the Indianapolis showing of the Jordan River Revue.
