Average of twenty industrials Friday was 100.18, off .69. Average of twenty rails was 127.52, up 1.28. Average of forty bonds w r aa 95.67, up .10. Bu United Press NEW YORK, March 12.—Today’s transactions were characterized by the irregularity which frequently develops in week-end sessions due to the evening up of accounts, but when bearishly inclined operators tried to extend this unsettlement into a general reaction they met with stubborn opposition from the ease of the money situation and cumulative indications of healthy expansion in various lines of business. Dun’s review called attention to the diversified character in the improvement of general trade as reflected by the steady gains being scored by barometric lines, particularly Steel. In the latter industry enlarging demand is coming from many sources, such as the railroad, building and automobile interests. Reflection of the comfortable credit condition which permitteed a 4 per cent call rate over the week-end on the threshhold of the huge March 15 turnover was found in the behavior of seasoned dividend rails like Union Pacific and Lackawanna. Industrials failed to develop a definite trend inasmuch as continuation of operations for the rise in some groups was offset by heavy technical selling in others. However, this class of stocks acted in a manner which maintained confidence regarding the fundamental soundness of the speculative structure. WAR ON ‘POWER TRUST’ Congressional Group Would Protect Muscle Shoals and Boulder Dam. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, March 12.—A campaign during the congressional recess to prevent the al'eged “power trust” from securing control of the Government’s two great power projects at Muscle Shoals and Boulder Dam was planned today by a number of western and southern members of Congress, most of whom favor Government operation. They announced today they will attempt this summer to arouse the public to the great value of these propects. They expect to present the subject by speeches and other forms of publicity.

HALF CENT LIMIT OF WHEAT RANGE Trading Dull, Prices Move in Narrow Margin. Bu United Press CHICAGO, March 12. Wheat moved within a range of only onehalf cent in a dull and lifeless market on the Chicago Board of Trade today, with closing figures showing very little variation from the previous close. The weakness in Liverpool was expected and had no effect here. The practically ideal weather conditions over the winter wheat belt and optimistic crop advices from the Southwest have already been discounted and most traders were of the disposition that prices were low enough and were not inclined to press,-the selling side. The cash market was steady and unchanged. Receipts were estimated at thirtysix cars. Corn showed more firmness than wheatand showed fairly good advances for the day. Receipts were only 102 cars and hftve declined steadily all week. The country roads are in bad condition and the movement is expected to continue small for some time. The cash market was %c higher. Oats advanced fractionally witli corn. The only stimulating news was advices from New York stating some oats had been taken for export. The cash market was unchanged. Receipts were 71 cars. Provisions closed steady. 3 DIE m GANG STRIFE Slayings First in Chicago Since Peace Pact Last Fall. Bu United Press CHICAGO, March 12.—Gang jvarfare, quiet since a peace pact was signed last fall, flared again overnight and today three men—including an underworld lieutenant—are dead. Two of the men, Frank “Lefty” Koncil—lieutenant for Joe Saltis, one time gang leader —and Charles Hrubeck, were ambushed by several gunmen at a lonely West side spot. Their motor car was riddled and bodies of the two men were found several hundred feet away. The other man, Benjamin J. Schneider, dealer in sacramental wines, was killed by a gunman who accosted him in front of the Schneider residence. Schneider left a list of known gunmen for police to question “in case anything ever happens to me.”

SEVERAL SENSATIONAL GAINS ARE RECORDED Gulf, Mobile & Northern Strikes Highest Mark in History —Credit Situation Bolsters Stock Market.
By Elmer C. Walzer Minaarr United S^rviof* NEW YORK, March 12.—Banks called large sums in loans Friday to make up their reserves at the Federal Reserve Bunk, but the money market was unchanged, the call rate holding steady at 4 per cent all -day and funds available at 3% per cent In the outside market. This ease In the credit situation bolstered up the stock market every time operators for the decline started a selling wave, and there were many attempts made. Stocks closed the day higher in most quarters, and several gains were scored, while losses held to small amounts for the most pajt in inactive issues. The day began with prices higher. In the first hour, however, an attempt was made to depress the market, and leaders declined moderately, only to recover and meet further resistance later. Railroad shares held up the remainder of the list.
