BROADWAY IS A QUIET FIGHTING 4 FRONTJOW-DAYS ‘Crime/ Melodrama, May Be One of Season’s Hits. By Dixie Hines NEW YORK, March B.—All Is quiet on the fightinsr front of Broad way. No more actresses have been incarcerated In our penal institutions and except for the barrage of | press matter that is being shot from j the several offices, we will have no definite casualties to report. “The Captive,” one of the plays voluntarily withdrawn when public condemnation was apparent, Is still jin the*storehouse although a Mr. | Liveright is getting quite upset 1 about it and threatens another pro- ’ duction. When the District Attorney in vlted him to go to it and take the chances, however, ho found it lei s attractive. Two other plays, "Sex" and “Tlio Virgin Man,” are to be arraigned this week, and the outcome of this will determine the rest of the plays under suspicion. Strange as it may seem, the best play produced last week was a lusty melodrama by Samuel Khlifl man and John B. Hymer, producer jby A. H. Woods, at the Eltingo I Theater with a vast cast and some J exceptionally* skilful stage direction. “Crime” is the saga of the local , criminal, with his gang, operatives, j feuds, jealousies and tragedies. Tho ! high spot is reached when the audi- ; once is to the stick up I of a jewelry store in Times Square. Nothing is left to the imagination. We see the trick being pulled exactly as it was laid out by the master mind in the act preceding. We seo the crowds passing, the conspirators placing their respective roles and finally we hear the shot that denotes I murder. It is quite as thrilling and far safer than any Broadway hold-up of the past several seasons. "Crime” will get you sure, especially as Sylvia the youngest member of the cast and Chester Morris is quite the most effective bad man the .stage has seen In a decade, while Claude Cooper, acting the role of an old criminal who has little in common with the new generation of ’crooks, bemoans the departure of the old days when crookdom was aij art and filled with romance. In fact, “Crime,” while no epic, Is a first rate melodrama, and for the time being it has taken precedence over the tabloids for sensationalism. “Lady In Love” “A Lady in Love," by Dorraine Davis, Is after tho Restoration comedies of Congreve and his school. Mr. Davis finds It rather difficult to hold to the language and atmosphere the sixteenth century, and we heW| frequent reference to sugar daddies and other night club expressions of the present. It is a naughty farce, but so exquisitely delightful is Peggy Wood that we refhso to believe our own 'ars, preferring to give our eyes a treat. Liana Carrerra, Rollo Lyon and Sydney aid In the merrl- ' ment, and though we may not record the event as the outstanding one of j the week, it is quite delightful for those wild like their comedy well ! seasoned. It is all about a pretty [ young wife married to a crabbed and t aged husband and how she tricks him into a compromising position | that she may herself find solace with ;v former lover. I It has beon skillfully cast and dl* j rected, and for the discriminating affords a delightful evening of farce, ; reminiscent of several of tho naughty farces of the early Eliza- | betlian period. j A merry bodge podge of this, that and what have you is “Polly of I Hollywood.” n Jamboree of music, dancing. Hkits and sketches, anti some rollicking travesty on Hollywood und Its principal inhabitants. Will Morrissy and Edmund Joseph concocted the affair nnd It is acted ' with considerable skill and cleverI ness. The story Is about the experl- ) ences of a screen struck girl from | Texas who moves to Hollywood with i all the people_we meet in the first act. There are travesties of film making, conceits of flnanco nnd In ! short the affair is an indescribatdo ' mass of song, dance nnd Midgie Miller is the bright star, there are a score of principals and half a hundred dnneing girls. A Simple Comedy “What Anne Brought Home” Is a simple comedy, produced at the WalInch Theater with a small but well selected cast. It is about a tender hearted, well meaning blunderer who falls Into a series of difficulties with his wife’s family because he wants to do a good turn to all. In this meddling ho brings happiness to all, Including marriage to all the daughters. Erman Seavy, anew name on Broadway programs, distinguishes himself for his excellent characterization. Opening late in the week was i "Babbling Brookes." a comedy In 1 which Edj-th Totten, formerly a favi orlte actress. Is returning to the stage. Miss Totten lias since then become affluent, with a theater named after herself and altogether I a conspicuous figure in local them- ' rieal affairs. . Reviews of “Babbling Brookes” I “Passions and Puppets nnd Light • You Are” nre deferred until later. DANGER FROM ICEBERGS H 'WASHINGTON, March B.—lcebergs are drifting from the Arctic regions Into tho Atlantic steam* lanes and several 'derelicts of tli* recent storms are causing renewa4 efforts of the coast guard to saf** guard shipping. The cutters Modoo and Tatr have ordered to proceed n W week to the Grand Banks, off Newfoundland, to locate icebergs, warn ships and to blow up bergr. A derelict schooner was reporte 1 In shipping lanes 375 ml' $ curt 1 Norfolk, Va., drafting i merged. A cutter was sent to sink It by gunfire. It was to be the Jesse E. Noyes, B.xston.
