808 YOUR HAIR, SAY FRIENDS; DON’T, WARNS HUSBAND ( ' \ 1 I ■ ■
This Wife Also Wears Her Dresses Long to Please Him, Wife Declares in Letter, Asking Martha Lee What to Do. Just how far do marital rights extend? How “bossy” is it right for a husband—or wife, to be?
Does the marriage ceremony give any one the authority to dictate the entirely personal matters, such as the way one wears his hair, the color and style of clothes that the married partner would don? In this age of determined reach for freedom on the part of women, it’s often a question who is “boss 1 ’ anyway. Perhaps the safe conclu sion is that neither partner should endeavor to be the dictator, but make their marriage a “give and take’’ proposition. Concretely that would mean that if the husband “gives in” about such matters as his wife bobbing her hair for instance, she would “give in” for him to smoke a pipe or do the thousand and one things the average wife fights in her husband. If the “give and take” line of activity is good strengthener of friendship why shouldn’t it be for the partnership called marriage? Wants to Bob Hair Dear Martha Lee: I have been married twenty years, and I and my husband have had no trouble until lately. I dress very old-fashioned —long dresses and long hair. Many say to me, “Why don't you have your hair bobbed and wear your dresses shorter?" My hair is 3 feet 10 inches long, and I can only do it up like a basket on my head, but my husband says, “No: while you are my wife you shall not bob your hair.” What shall I do? MARY. Dear, dear, I didn’t know this bobbing question was still agitating families. I don’t like to advise under such circumstances as this, but it seems to me that your poor head should have a rest. Do you dictate which side your husband parts his hair? But after all, only you know whether the freedom of a bobbed head would be sufficient satisfaction to nullify his displeasure. Their Religions Differ Dear Martha Lee: I have been going with a fellow for many months. We are to be married soon, but this is the trouble: He is of an opposite religious faith to mine. He doesn’t seem to want to talk about it, and says that when we are married we can be married by whomever I choose. _ . . , X feel that I can t give him up, but how can I be happy with him under the circumstances? What about our children, if we should have any? This is a “stumper questien to me. What do you say? “DIXIE.” I have left nothing by which your letter could be recognized as you see. It takes all kind of people to make a world, and some folks get terribly agitated over such a question as you' propound, but to save my life I can never see why a difference in religious beliefs should come between folks who love each other. What is religion? If it’s a force to promote peace and love, how can you expect It to cause trouble? This is refreshing. You who are pessimistic on the subject of marriage, read: ______

The Best of 250 Shampoos By Edna Wallace Hopper Here is an example of how I get the best beauty aids created. A famous laboratory sent me some shampoo. They said, “we have spent 60 years in the study of shampoos. We made up and tested over 250 formulas before we perfected this. Here is the final result. It not only leaves hair soft and clean, but it gives a sunny glint.” Well, I found they were right. My hair was like a halo after using that shampoo. I knew at once that millions of women would welcome a wash like that. So I asked those famous chemists to make it for all of us. I called it Edna Wallace Hopper’s Fruity Shampoo. All toilet counters now supply it at 60c per bottle under my guarantee. Or the coupon will bring you a trial bottle, also my Beauty Book. Try it for your own sake. You will be amazed and delighted.

Are Happily Married Dear Martha Lee: I read of so many folks who are unhappily married, and it makes me feel that some who know how wonderful marriage—a real partnership—can be. should sometimes add a word. We have been married four years. Out* married life gets sweeter as the years roll by. Why? Because we pull together. We love to go places together, and nobody else interests either of us. Do we ever have ups and downs? Yes, because we are not perfect, but we are so sorry afterward, and any unpleasantness is over fairly before it begins. 1 am glad every day that we love each other. It means everything, MRS. BLUE EYES. Thinks Young Folks Shallow Dear Martha Lee: The trouble with young people of today is that they think too much of earthly things and not enough of God. If you speak of Him in a crowd of young people of today, they look embarrassed. That's why they are never satisfied. They don’t realize that fine clothes, beautiful furniture, dancing, all worldly things, amount to nothing unless you nave the grace of God, too. I now, realize this because I am one of those who didn’t stop to think. ELLEN. “Peggy” wishes to know if it “is proper for a girl to ask a boy for a date.” No, Peggy. The nearest she can properly come to It is to give a party or some kind of an affair and invite him along with others.

impatient-looking people. She rightly guessed that they were to be called as witnesses for the defense in Cherry’s trial. Odd that all these people, rpost of whom she had never seen before in her life, knew something which Stephen Churchill would try to get into the record to help clear Cherry of the charge of murder. “I’m sorry, Miss Lane, but Mr. Churchill is frightfully busy,” the lawyer’s secretary told Faith crisply. “I’m afraid he can’t see you at all today.” “I must see him,” Faith urged. “I have information of vital importance.” She could not look at the witnesses as she waited for the secretary to return from the lawyer's private office but she was conscious that they were whispering about her. "Mr. Churchill will see you for a minute, Miss Lane,” the secretary announced. Two other lawyers—lesser legal lights, who were assisting Churchill, —rose when Faith entered the private office, but Churchill churlishly remained seated. “My dear Miss Lane,” he barked, behind the inevitable cloud of cigar

Not good policy anyway.” Faith’s mouth quivered as she answered, but she resolutely kept anger out of her voice. “I’m sorry to bother you, Mr. Churchill, but Mr. Hathaway and I have stumbled upon something which we believe is of vital importance.” Then she told her story, haltingly at first, finally with a rush of eager words. When she had finished recit ing the meager facts, she summed up: “I have a theory that the old man had been nursing a fancied grievance against Mr. Cluny for months, and that when his mind gave way, he plotted the murder. The fact that Cherry happened to be on the scene just a minute before successfully diverted suspicion from him, but he really took no particular pains to conceal his crime. There were his footprints in the snow. And as I told you, they fit almost exactly,” she reiterated desperately, in face of Churchill’s frowning impatience and frank skepticism. “You’re writing fiction, Miss Lane. It’s rot, I tell you, absolutely rot.” Churchill mouthed his cigar. “Everybody in the downtown district has seen old Phil hundreds of times; old and sick and harmless. Don’t waste any more time on him. Miss Lane. You keep busy on getting Cherry ready for the trial. And for God’s sake, see that she doesn't use any rouge or lipstick. We want her to look pale, you understand, little and pale and childish.” “Mr. Churchill," Faith pleaded. “Won’t you please put one of your investigators on the trail of the crip-

I’m Most Grateful Everv Month Here's glorious news for long-suf-fering womankind. To every woman who periodically has suffered pain. Menstruation need no longer be painful. And It is Science that is speaking. Specialists have developed a tiny tablet called inldol. It's a simple thing, utterly harmless to a girl of fourteen, but It brings relief in five to seven minutes. And is effective twelve hours or longer. Midol is NOT a narcotic. It has no effect whatever on heart or nervous system. It acts directly on those organs affected by menstruation. They function normally, as they should, but the pain is banished. Complete relief —yes, perfect comfort —follows midol. Your druggist has midol for 50 cents, in a slim aluminum box to tuck in your purse. Takes Pain Off tha Calendar

MENDING TISSUE Press mending tissue into silk to prevent buttonholes from fraying. TO MEND LACE Baste torn lace on paper. Then stitch the lines of the design as well as you can across the area missing, and tear paper away. If the lace is ecru, dip the whole in a coffee solution. OLIVE OIL Olive oil brushed on a skillet and allowed to stand for several days will correct a tendency to burn. COOL CAKE Let a cake cool before applying icing, so that the steam may escape.
