P 1 fs DEPICTS DRIVE TO BETTER MEXICAN NATION Points to Schools and Land Distribution as Efforts for Progress. Editor’s Note: This is the third of a - series of interviews with President Calles i ' of Mexico, by William Philip Simms, fort t|n editor of the Scripps-Uoward news- -- 1- tiers. Never before has Mexico’s p? I 'llan of Iron” talked with such freedom =- for the American public The first interview dealth with Mexieo-Nicaraguan and Latin-American policy. In the second. Calles told why Mexico and the ? United States do not get along and sug--7 gested a remedy. „ . , . Below he describes Mexico s domestic difficulties and tells how he is trying to j solve them. By William Pliilip Simms r MEXICO CITY, March 4.—"Wliat flare you driving at?" I asked Presii dent Calles as we sat in the luxu's rious executive offices at the nation- ■ al palace here discussing Mexico’s troubles with the United States. “Just what is Mexico trying to do?" “Mexico is trying to find the road to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness which, I take it, after readying your truly great Constitution, is -what the people of the United States .are trying to do,” the president answered. “Only,” he went on, “our task is harder than yours. Racially, you are mostly of similar stock. Such Indians as you found in North America you quickly disposed of. r Immigration further aided in solving your problems. Half Indian Population “Mexico Is a country inhabited by many races of different tongues and .different minds. We have about fifteen million Inhabitants. Os these i eight million, or more than half, are pure Indian. Another four million are Mestizos, or mixed blood. The rest are of Spanish descent. “How can we build a unified nation of all these different elements, -often conflicting? “Exterminate the Indians? That would not be human. We cannot do • that. Assimilate them? If possible, yes. But are they assimilable? “By actual experiment, by brain HE QUITE TAKING MEDICINE AFTER HE USED KONJOLA Four Years of Stomach and Kidney Trouble Was Ended 7 Months Ago by the New Compound. “I certainly know about the merits of this new Konjola, because it completely ended the health troubles I had been suffering four years and I haven’t taken any medicine in seven months, because I am still in per-

ifect condition since I used your compound,” said Mr. Ora Brannon, well -sfcnown Indianapolis citizen, living at §829 N. Elder St., this city, while recently with The Konjola •Man at Hook’s drug store, Pennsylvania and Market Sts., Indianapolis, iwhere large crowds are calling daily po find out for themselves about this medicine. “My suffering was caused by disordered stomach and kidneys,” said ■Mr. Brannan. “The food I ate digest right, and I suffered pith gas which bloated me up and “seemed to almost cut off my breath. •My heart would flutter and jump =and every bite I ate seemed to lay in ny stomach like a piece of rock. *£ven a drink of water or glass of iJnilk would hurt me. My kidneys •were weak, and sharp, agonizing pains would catch me in the back. *7 y could feel the pains clear up my ''shoulders, and sometimes a liquid Avould rush into my mouth like a “fountain and would burn just like ypcalding water. I was very restless sat nights and always got up feeling ’-tired and achy in the mornings. "In this condition I started taking Konjola, over seven months ago. At first I noticed tny stomach was improving, and I could sleep better at Slight. As I continued with this medicine I improved so rapidly I believe. I was the happiest man in our neigh--borhood. Anyway, when I had finished a little over five bottles I decided my health was about as good as anybody’s at my age. So I waited a month or two and when none of jny old troubles came back I hardly knew what to make of it. I willingly pave full credit to Konjola, and have been praising this medicine to everybody I know. It certainly is wonderful the relief I got. My stomach is in fine condition and I am free of ’till the kidney trouble. I eat anything I want, and nothing hurts me. My sleep is restful, and I feel fine Pn the morning and finish up a good pay’s work and never get tired when Evening comes. I am mostly thankful for being free of pains in the %ack. No one would ever know’ I had a sick day in my life now. : “Yes, I want to indorse Konjola jo everyone, and would be glad to tersonally tell anybody about this ledicine.” -r The Konjola Man Is at Hook’s drug 3 ore, Pennsylvania and Market Sts., i lianapolis, where he is daily meetly : the local public and introducing 5 and explaining the merits of this rnedy. Ancient Roman Building?
A view of an ancient Roman building, the ruins of which weather the elements today in but a semblance of its once stately splendor? No, to the contrary, it is a common view on the west side of the Kentucky Ave, bridge near W. Ray St., the deteriorated and partly demolished building once occupied by the Puritan Bed Spring Company. Board of works signs “No Trespassing” admit countless bricks scattered on the grounds from fallen walls keep company with an occasional bed spring.
measurements and other scientific tests, we have found that they are assimilable, biologically speaking. Likewise, we have proved it in a practical way. “A couple of years ago we set up here in Mexico City a house of Indian students, an institute where every age boys from the Indian tribes of Mexico are . brought for training. Today, after less than two years’ work, these boys cannot be distinguished from other Mexican boys, no Indian. In their studies, at work and in sports, they are quite the equal of the other boys. Environment Binders “Environment then, not race, or lack of native intelligence, is what has been holding back the mass of Mexico’s population. “Mexico’s duty, therefore, is quite plain; she must change this environment. “How? By education. By making them intellectually and materially free. That is to say, they must be

nomically free, we are distributing land. More than half our total population, as I previously told you, are Indians. These live' almost entirely on the land. So they must have land to work. Mexico can never be what she should be, economically, until her rural population ceases to work in peonage for a handful of absentee landlords. Her country folks must have land of their own to cultivate, so they may become at least peasants instead of peons. “Now, you know why we are breaking up our huge estates, some of which are larger than some of your States. Don’t forget, however, that the Indians once owned all the land and were separated from it only too often by trickery and fraud.” “How long will it take for your program to be worked out?”I asked. “I’ve heard the criticism made that much of the trouble over the new lands arise because you are trying to do during your term in office, four years, what would be difficult to accomplish in fifty years: in other words, because you are trying to go too fast.” President Calles smiled. “I only wish I could do it in four years," he said. “It will take at least twenty years of the very hardest kind of work.
