EARLHAM BACKS * EUROPEAN TOUR ioWege Also Sends Student ( to Japan. Bu Times Special RICHMOND, Ind., Feb. 25. —Earlham College Is sponsoring two undertakings to promote closer contacts and understanding between American and foreign students. The first of these is a European tour this summer, conducted by Prof. Arthur M. Charles, head of the modern language department. Countries visited will include England, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France, with an opportunity for study in Paris, Berlin or Madrid. The trip is open to students and alumni of Earlham, Oberlin and Vassar Colleges, Washington University and the University of Nebraska. The second enterprise is the sending of an Earlham student for a year’s study in Japan. Wilfred \. Jones, a junior from Havana, Cuba, where his parents are Friends missionaries, has been chosen. He will spend next year in a Japanese university, returning to Earlham the following year to complete his studies at the Quaker college. Jones has been invited by the United Crews, Inc., to take passage as far as Yokohama on the “floating university” next fall. “ISLAND UNIVERSES” MT. WILSON, Cal., Feb. 25.—With cameras and the giant reflecting telescopes of the observatory here, Dr. Edwin Hubble has been studying the nebular universe outside our own solar system. These “extra-galactic ’ objects, he says, are not actually gaseous nebulae, but are spiral groupings of stars. Dr. Hubble finds that within a distance of 500,000,000-, 000,000,000,000 miles, these groups j are evenly distributed, with one spir- j al for a cubic space represented by the figure seven and fifty-six ciphers.
