MOFFAT TUNNEL TO BE FINISHED AHEM TIME sass Under Continental Divide Longest in United States. .... til Times Special DENVER, Feb. 25.—After a grim battle with nature, the engineers engaged in the construction of the Moffat tunnel, the six-and-a-half-mile “hole” through the Continental Divide, are putting the finishing touches to their job in anticipation of a formal opening for railroad service on July 1 and the widespread interest aroused at the time the work was begun again is in evidence. About every known drilling difficulty including soft rock and an un-dar-rornd river was encountered at one stage or another of the work, but the latest surveys show that unless unusually hard luck pursues the proj|pt, one of the greatest engineering jobs of modern times will be completed three weeks ahead of the time limit set when the contracts were drawn up. Saves 175 Miles The object of the Moffat tunnel is to reduce the grade at which the Denver & Salt Lake railroad crossed the Rocky Mountains. The present grade is 4 per cent. The tunnel will reduce this to less than 2 per cent and at the same time save 175 miles of t.'avel by train between Denver, Salt Lake City and California. Although “Moffat Tunnel” generally is taken to mean the proposed railroad tunnel, two holes actually are being bored, one for water and the other for railroad transportation. Some idea of the magniture of the job which the engineers have faced in the past three years and more may be derived from a study of figures compiled up to the end of last year. As of Dec. 31, 1920, 700 miles of holes had been drilled and 2.500,000 pounds of powder used. Eleven million board feet of timber also were used, corresponding to 2,000 miles of plank an inch thick and twelve inches wide. Eight hundred thousand pounds of drill steel were required to loosen the 3,000,000,000 pounds of rock removed from the tunnel. Uncovers River In the railroad tunnel bore, soft rock, requires extensive and permanent timbering was encountered. At one spot a river running 3,000 gallons a minute was uncovered, necessitating considerable pumping since the bore had passed the apex before this difficulty was met.
