G. 0. P. SIRED •OVER CRAVENS’ GRAFTCIRGES Reference- to Sassafras Tea Breaks Tenseness of • Senate Argument. Charging that the Marion and Lake County delegations in the Indiana Senate are interested only in “salary grabs” and legislation benefitting corporations, which borders on graft. Senator Joseph M. Cravens (Deni.), Madison, drew fire from the Republican side of the Senate chamber late Wednesday The debate arose over the attempt by Senator Sumner Clancy (Rep.), Indianapolis, to introduce an amendment to House Bill 102, which was on second reading. Permits Bridge The bill will permit county commissioners to raise bonds nad finance an approach to a bridge across the Ohio at Jeffersonville. The bridge itself is to be paid for by the State of Kentucky. Cravens contended the amendment, based on a technicality, was designed to benefit the toll bridge at New Albany, owned by a •tilroafi corporation. The amendment was defended by Senator William P. Lvans (Rep.), Indianapolis, “Why should Marion County Senators be so interested in this matter?” Senator Cravens inquired. “I’m tired of seeing Marion and Lake Counties interfering-in matters that are none of their f'oncern and supporting only their own salary grabs and grafts. Their wanting to amend this proposal sounds technical, but it really is to benefit a corporation. I see no way in which they can justify their actions.” Lieutenant Governor F. Harold Van Orman, although haling from Kvansville, was irritated at this attack. He signaled Republican Floor Leader Janies J. Nejdl, Whiting, Lake County, to fire back and also called Senate*.' William F. Hodges (Rep.), Gary, to the rostrum and told him “don’t let him get away witli that graft stuff.” Censures Veteran Xcjul took the offensive and said that the Senate should censure a member that made such charges and insinuations. Cravens leaped to his feet. He is the veteran legislator of the seventyfifth assemble and lias a record of more than a quarter of a century as a member of one house or the other. Nejdl also is a veteran and a parlimentary leader. “I’m sorry that this parlimentarian of the majority party saw fit to censure me, but if this Senate so desires let them all censure me,” Cravens replied. •L’enseness of the moment was da nby h tor Hodges who depart'd that i . vens had been irnbibtg of that famous drink "sassafrass ca." Smiles returned and to cap the ’ max Clancy withdrew his amendmat and the bill passed to engross, icnt. “0LE0” BILL IS KILLED City Senators Aided by Van Orman in Postponing Farm Measure, Moving too fast for the farmers, city Senators, aided by Lieutenant Governor F. Harold Van Orman, killed the “oleo” bill by indefinite postponement when it came up on second reading Wednesday afternoon. The bill provided that oleomargerino could be used only' by the State in penal institutions, and also that wherever used in restaurants a sign to that effect must be prominently displayed. It had passed the House. As soon as it was called down, 1 Senator Edward O’Rourke Jr. (Rep.), Ft. Wayne, moved that It be indefi-1 nltely postponed. Efforts to table this motion failed and Van Orman ruled the O’Rourke motion prevailed on a voice vote. ! Farm bloc Senators had promised 1 to amend the bill so that it would not : effect State institutions, but they ! didn’t have time.
