Hints at Joker in Farm Relief Bill “Let's not pass a joker here now and let ourselves open to criticism when this bill begins to operate.” declared Representative J. Glenn Harris (Rep.), Lake, chairman of Judiciary A Committee of the Indiana House of Representatives, when the Lindley-Shake- Johnson farm relief bill appeared in the House Wednesday afternoon. The bill, backed by the farm bloc in both houses, seeks a reappraisement of land for tax purposes. "Farm land is assessed too high,” declared Lemuel A. Pittenger, Delaware, Republican floor leader. Debate on the question to recommit the bill to Judiciary A Committee waged for almost an hour. The bill was reported favorably by the committee on agriculture. An attempt by Representative John W. Scott to have the hill returned to a legal committee for reconsideration precipitated sharp discussion between farm bloc members and urban Representatives. An effort to delay the reappraising process until 1928 also failed. The bill passed to engrossment and is expected soon on third reading.
