Perfect Anagram Thrills Puzzlers Bn United Press NEWARK, N. J., Feb. 23.— After discovering a perfect anagram, there was no further unfinished business before the convention of the National Puzzlers’ League, so members today were on the way to their homes. William Grossman, prominent New York attorney, provided the anagram the won hearts of his fellow puzzlers. He wrote the words "They See’’ on a blackboard and then showed what could be done about it. Using the same letters but rearranging them, Grossman formed the words ‘‘The Eyes,” which had a kindred meaning. It seems that an anagram is no good unless it says just about the same thing the original words do. Anagrams from names of prominent persons also were .shown. William Oaynor was transposed into "a willing mayor,” which he was. of New York. William Howard Taft became “a word with all, I’m fat.”
THOMPSON WINS EASILY Fortner Chicago Mayor Chosen by CL O. P. —Dever Nominated. Bu United Press CHICAGO, Feb. 23.—Two men, both of whom have held the mayoralty office of Chicago, will be among the three contestants for mayor on April 5. Ex-Mayor William Hale Thompson, Republican, was nominated yesterday in a sweeping landslide, while Mayor William E. Dever, Democratic incumbent, had little opposition In the Democratic primaries. The third contestant in April will be Dr. John Dill Robertson, Independent and Republican, who was health commissioner in the former Thompson administration. Yesterday’s election, which was accompanied by terrorism in which some 200 ballots were stolen, one man was shot and several others badly beaten, was a landslide for the big, ruddy-faced Thompson. He carried every ward In the city but one against his opponent, Edward R. Litsinger. . MINE CONFEREES LEAVE Workers Hopeful <jf Later Confer-ence-Operators Pessimistic. Bu United Press MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 23—Bituminous coal operators and miners from the central competitive field were leaving Miami today, their efjorts to reach an agreement on mine wages a failure. This forecasts a strike in the entire bituminous Industry In case no agreement can be reached before the present wage agreement —the Jacksonville agreement—expires, March 31. President John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers of America says there Is still hope of a settlement of the wage dispute. H. Hastings, leader of the Ohio operators, however, can see little hope for a peaceful settlement.
