Once she tried to run away with ALBERT ETTELSON. a married traveling salesman, and was rescued by her sister •nd BO .6 HATHAWAY. Faith's fiance •nd nephew of Cluny. Cherry admits that Cluny attempted Jo force the marriage, but protests her Faith suspects Chriß Wiley thinking lie knew that Cluny had willed much money to Cherry. Charles Reilly Neff, who drew up the will, testifies that Cluny made Cherry his chief beneficiary whether or not she married him. The coroner’s jury releases Cherry, but immediately she and her husband gre arrested by DEVLIN, deputy district furious when Bob telle her ATTORNEY STEPHEN CHURCHILL, whom he employed, thinks circumstances are against Cherry and suggests a plea ox self-defence as the best chance of her freedom. Peculiar footprints and a bit of torn strap suggest that the murderer be a cripple, but this evidence Is not Dr Cherry is ihdicted for first degree murBob plays burglar in Ralph Cluny’s office and finds the threatening letter written him, which Cherry had described. Faith was so angry when she left Blumfeld’s fur shop, with the mink coat again safe in the suitcase, that she forgot her timidity and her fears. Before that saving anger had cooled down she was baclrion State St., and, ■within five minutes, demanding, haughtily, an audience with the manager of an exclusive establishment before which she had hesitated in an Rony of indecision less than an hour fore. Not even the thick-carpeted, silkdraped elegance of the shop daunted her. She held her head high as slim, haughty princesses of the world of fur coat models paraded past her, staring at her obliquely out of mascaraed, faintly contemptuous eyes. “This way please,” a suave young salesman beckoned to her. She followed him up a broad marble staircase to the offices on a balcony overlooking the display rooms. "Mr. Garner will see you, Miss.” The salesman opened a door for her and she entered a private office sedate with mahogany and Oriental rugs. Conscious that she looked out of place, in her shabby clothes, in the magnificence of her surroundings, she did not allow hereelf to resent the fact that the thin-faced, keeneyed man at that desk did not rise to greet her. She set her suitcases down close to the do*>r, then approched his desk, still buoyed up by her righteous anger. “I am Faith Lane,” she began without a tremor. “My sister. Cherry Lane Wiley, has asked me to sell her mink coat, and I have brought it to show to you.” “Cherry Lane Wiley!” To Faith’s intense surprise, the stern face of the fur shop manager relaxed into a smile that was almost, eager in its excitement. “The copper-haired mur —I beg pardon! Os course I’ve been following the case. I’b extremely interested. Have a seat, Miss Lane. Happy to meet you. Now, tell me Bhvhat will her defense be?” He Tvaned forward with boyish excitement. “I—please, Mr. Garner, I'd rather not discuss the case,” Faith stammered. “Thanks very much for your interest. ner. We are working people, or rather, we were working people, until this thing happened. Cherry worked and my father and brother. Now there is only Junior —” She caught herself up sharply, ashamed that she appeared to be appealing to his sympathies. “I am merely trying to explain why it is necessary for us to sell anything of value that my sister owns.” “I understand,” Mr. Garner nodded. “Let me see the coat. Garner’s does not buy used fur coats, but I can probably direct you to a manufacturing furrier who will give you the best price possiole.” When the beautiful coat was In his hands, the fur shop owner drew a sharp breath of admiration. “Perfect! Finest skins! Perfectly matched! You ought to get a good price for this, Miss Lane. I'll call up Frankel myself. But—just a minute. Have you any credentials with you? It’s just a form, of course. I believe you are what you say you are, but as a matter of business—” , Faith opened her handbag and drew out a folded slip of paper which carried Cherry's formal conveyance of the coat from herself to Faith. It had been Bob's foresight which had armed her with this protection. (Copyright, 1927, NBA Service, Inc.) NEXT: Faith sells Cherry’s fur coat.

HERE’S ANOTHER WHO CRITICISES FLAPPERS But He’s Answered by a Girl Who Insists Men ‘Made Us What We Are Today.’ By Martha Lee A Hood of letters has come to this column in response to “Disgusted’s” letter and the answer to him from “Miss Twen-ty-Three.”
Almost invariably, the young men stand by "Disgusted” and declare that the modern girl would please them more, if she were more “sen•sible,” while the “flappers” declare with equal vehemence that “Miss Twenty-Three” is right and that they | dress and act as the men want them ! to. Asa person "convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still” we’ll print a typical letter from each side and call it a day. The young man’s letter first. (We must give the girl the last word): Men Act as Girls Wish" Pear Martha Lee: T have been reading hot!. "Dialsiisted's" letter* and the ansver to it from "Miss Twcnt.v-Thr-e ard this is my view. I am a young man in tne middle twenties and have roa '™‘ d i ,,‘A pr nf th £ country for several years. My ideaol a "real girl’’ is one that dresses respectably ami has Rood manners. The average modern Kiri with her boyish bob and knee-high skirts, is out of it with me. I know that men treat girls as they like to be treated. If the girls want t° be treated in a respectful manner they II have to act that way. Most men of my age. feel as I do about this. H j Here’s a typical letter from a girl: Girls Act as Men Wish Dear Martha Lee: I would like to give you the viewpoint of a 16-year-oia snrj. who is a flapper in every sense of the word ; Fellows call us dappers and gold diggers and think we haven l a serious thought in the world. They are always crying for the "old-fashioned" type of girl but do they really know what they want? I think not for watch them “pass up the very tjpc th We' girls would rather be “pals’* to fellows and have good clean fun. instead of being wild. However, a girl wants to have a good time when she is young and wo “make un” and dress and act as we QO,_bec”use that is what the fellows want. .Tell them if they want to meet the oldtype of Kiri they can find her in the next '27 flapper—if they’re sincere (tho men, I mean). If my husband will promise to do right I suppose it would be mv duty to pro back to him, but wnen i think or the one I love. I am torn between love and duty. Which ohall u '^|c lDED , Your foundation for loving this man in California seems very slight. Are you sure that you really love him, or are you trying to build up a romantic little dream situation for yourself? So many women long for romance and look around to find someone to fasten it to. The tone of your letter suggests this very thing. He Hasn’t a Cent We both love each other, but he hasnt got a cent, not even a job. He says II i won't marry him though that he won t care what becomes of him and I hate to see him go to the bad. Don’t be afraid, little girl, that you will ruin his life by refusing to marry him. You might, though, if you did marry him. as he is,-and with no start in life, nothing could be sillier than for him and you to take such a step. Let nothing induce you to do so. “Wondering” wants to know if a ruby or signet ring would be a suitable birthday gift for a young man whpm she has been “keeping company” with for six months. Personally, I don’t approve of girls giving men expensive presents, such as jewelry. “Betty” complains that her young man has lately "-transferred most of his attentions to a girl who has “very pretty clothes and fur coat.” Don’t try to hold on to him, Betty. You can’t forcibly, hold affection, and any that’s affected by a girl’s pretty clothes isn’t worth much, anyway. x < LETTUCE GREENS Boil a quantity of lettuce, strain and chop. Chill on ice and marinate with a rich French dressing. Serve in a mold on a lettuce leaf with Russian dressing. This, is one of the most healthful of salads.
