FEVER AFFLICTS CANADIAN MOOSE, Vampire Ticks Attack Men as Well as Animals. Ril United Prrux EDMONTON, Canada, Feb. 12. Northwestern Canada’s game, notably its world-renowned moose, has suffered extensive losses this season f*om “spotted” fever, a strange malady induced by an unknown species of bloodsucking ticks. A forest ranger who spent three months on the trails of the foothill forest reserves, traversing hundreds of miles of little-known wilderness, reported moose had visibly decreased in number, presumably due to the strange “vampire" tick. Other game has been affected by the ticks, though not so extensively, the ranger reported. In addition to attacking all species of game, the ticks have frequently attached themselves to humans, according to-reports from travelers and woodsmen. They cause a serious illness commonly described as “spotted" fever. The man attacked does not become aware of it until loss of blood causes weakness, which is accompanied by fever.

TOMB IS FOUND BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 12. Buried under a heap of forest leaves and forgotten for almost a century, the tomb of John Hutchings was found near here recently. Hutchings was a friend of President Andrew Jackson, the two men seeing service in the Creek War together.
