mood. He accused her of accepting attention from Hob Wallace. Sonia decides that she will not disappoint Don. If that is what he thinks of her, she will play that kind of a game. She tries to act carefree, but admits to Stephen that she loves her husband. Stephen no longer interests her. She caii* Don on tile telephone. Sonia tries to straighten things out with Don, but ho refuses to listen ,to her. so she calls on Bob Wallace. Elaine appears on the scene, and to save Sonia Bob Wallace tells her about Jinny. Elaine meets Jinny. She tells Elainu she ami Boh were merely flirting. Anna Marsh is seriously ill and Sonia's sister calls her. Sonia is unable to reach Don, so makes the trip alone. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XXXIII Hours before she reached the shabby little house. Before she knelt by Anna’s bed to cry, “Oh, darling, why didn't you tel) us sooner?’’ Anna was suffering intense pain. “Where's Don?” she whispered. “He’ll be here, mother. He was out of the city, but I left word for hint.” If only he would come quickly. Ridiculous to pin her confidence to hint when Stockton doctors admitted there was so little hope. But Soniu> did. . . . Vera, pale with worry and lack of sleep, led her into the kitchen, insisting that she have a cup of tea. “You’re all in, aren't you,” Sonia asked, sympathetically. “I am,” Vera confessed, “But you aren’t looking any too well.” Sonia flushed. “Tell me about mother. When did she first take sick?” “Sonia Marsh,” asked Vera, suddenly, “Arc you keeping something from me?” "Don't be silly, Vera. I suppose I do look like a wreck.” “You can’t fool me, little sister. I’ve been through It too often.” '’a eyes flashed. "Well, just because you're always doPfig it you needn’t suspect every Other woman.” Vera poured the tea with an unsteady hand. “Sit down, honey! Want some jelly with your bread and butter? • You asked about mother. She's been feeling badly for weeks, but you know liow she is. I don’t think she was very careful about that diet Don gave her.” v Sonia’s eyes filled with tears. Vera was humoring her as she would a sick child. But she swallowed the bread and butter gratefully. She returned to sit by Anna’s bed. To hold her hand, counting the minutes, which dragged like hours. Praying that Don would come. . . . Towards evening Anna became unconscious. To Sonia, .then, life’s values shifted. Realities stood out in naked digrfity while less important things were shredded like paper dolls in a fierce wind. Love, sacrifice, courage, duty! Protection of little children. The maintenance, at whatever cost, of cheerful homes. These were essentials. She looked at Vera, kneeling, beside the bed, her hand clasped In her husband’s. Sonia had never liked Paul. She thought lie was weak and something of a bully. But tears were in his eyes, and she knew the pressure of his hand meant more to Vera than any amount of sympathy trom any outsider. Her heart ached with longing. She wanted her husband, too. She NEEDED him. . . . Would she be forced to face tho loss of her mother alone? At that moment she heard his quick tread. Someone opened the door, crying, “Oh, it’s Don.” Her eyes met his eagerly, but she felt only a professional compassion in his response. He patted her cold hand. “I came as soon as I could. How is your mother?” “Awfully bad, Don. The doctors say there is~no hope.” He set his lips grimly and went to work. Sonia would never forget that night. A hundred times she closed

her eyes .to breathe a passionate prayer of graHtude for Don’s years of training. For the thousands of dollars spent on lfls education, which once she had begrudged him. For her own lonely hours, while he was away. . . . For anything which had contributed even slightly to his knowledge and skill. For he saved her mother's life. The others said it was a miracle, but Sonia knew it was Don. Her eyes were circled with weariness, swollen with tears. But for once in her life she had no thought of her appearance. She found him in the kitchen, drinking his seventh cup of strong black coffee. “Oh,” she cried, "you’re wonderful. ...” She had forgotten their trouble in the joy of Aer mother’s recovery. Slie was surprised when he drew her, hungrily, Into his arms. “Sonia, can you ever forgive me?” Unable to answer she flung her arms tightly about his neck. CBob told me before I wont to Elyria,” he continued. “My dear, I offer no defense. ‘Mine was jealousy in love.’ But that is no excuse 1 should have trusted you.” “I couldn’t understand, Don. If you had only explained as I asked you to.” “I couldn't explain, honey. I had the Idea that you might lie to me. And if you did I was afraid I might do something I’d regret.” Sonia wondered if this could really be the self-controlled Dr. Stillwater. He lifted her white face ana looked deeply into her eyes. “I hope you’ll believe me when I say I did not suspect you of anything more serious than flirting. But in the face of love like ours even flirting was too much. I could not love you, the way I must love you, when I thought you were playing ever so lightly with another man.” He paused and added, huskily, “From the bottom of my heart I ask your pardon.” Her lips quivered, but she snuggled closer beneath his chin. “Drallng, I though I’d die without you.” Vera entered the kitchen. “Don, you don't know how grateful we all are ...” The exquisite joy of falling asleep" in her own narrow, little bed, knowing that her mother would live, and that tomorrow she would return to San Francisco with her husband. Back to her adorable flat, to the white-tiled kitchen, the meals in tib breakfast room, the evenings before the fire. Alone? Why not? Those long hours, had no terror for her now. When she awoke Anna was asking for her. Sonia did not wait to dress. “Darling, you’re better . . .” “Sonia,” Anna whispered, earnestly, "I want to see Don.” When he come she asked to speak .to him, privately. But in only a moment he came out and led Sonia back into her mother’s room. There were tears in Anna’s dark eyes. “Your mother wants to be sure everything is all right.”

“I worried about It, Sonia. I was afraid I’d dlo before I got to tell him.” “Tell him what, Mother?” “Tell him to make you go back to him,” Anna said firmly. “He’s the only person I ever knew who could make you mind.” Before they returned to San Francisco they went to see Don’s mother. She received them, doubtfully. Uncertain what new shock they were to bring, she felt she had really had more than her share surprises. Being Sonia’s mother-in-law was not the most desirable existence for an old lady, who loved routine and the placidity of an ordered life. But she was loyal. After Don had explained that it was all his fault, that he had been unjustly suspicious, and Sonia was not in the least to blame, she said, “Well, I told Sonia she should have stuck it out. I knew you loved her. Young wives are so apt to fly off the handle. Especially . . .’•’ The flash in Sonia’s eyes stopped her. . “Come here and kiss me, honey,” she cried. “But don’t you dare leave my boy again no matter what happens.” (To De Continued) TO STOP NAIISEA IN THE MORNING Or Goneness in the Stomach At any Time Try a little diapepsin.
