THE SEQUEL TO SONIA - By Vida Hurst *■
BEGIN HERE TODAY SONIA, the younp wife of Dr. Don Stillwater, because jealous of her husband when she Inadvertently learns ho was formerly enraged to— ELAINE WALLACE, stylish wife of Stillwater's partner, DR, ROBERT WAL--Through ESTHER LANE, stenographer in are office, Sonia also learns that Dr. Wallace is somewhat of a flirt, and attracts many of his women pa. tients. Sonia fears the Wallaces may have heard about her affair with FRANKLIN CRANE before she was married. Sonia thinks Don is ill, because he is not looking well, and calls on Dr. Wallace for advice. She receives no satisfaction from Wallace, who tries to flirt with her. She runs across Stillwater and Elaine Wallace in a restaurant later and is filed with conflicting emotions. On (Tie night of their wedding anniversary, Elaine phones, calling Don away as they are about to go out and celebrate. He returns with a gift picked out by Elaine. Later at the Wallaces, Elaine accuses Sonia of calling her husband by phone and then denying it. Sonia receives a letter from Frankline Crane, saying ho is coming to San Francisco. \ Sonia fears Don's love for her is waning and decides to leave home to live with Jinny of Jtd Thomas’ office. Sonia refuses any financial assistance from Don. Jinny tells Sonia she is in love with a married man, who proves to be Dr. Wallace. A young snlesman. Stephen Sessenger. in tho office of Jed Thomas is interested in Sonia. Sonia meet* Don while out walking with Stephen. The sight of him with the pained look about his eyes caused her to swoon. Don calls on her cud insists on her taking uest, Sonia was thinking of t'ne perfect evening spent with Stephen when lie suddenly caught her violently in his arms. Don called on Sonia in an angry mood. Ho nceused her of accepting attention from Bob Wallace. Sonia derides that she will not disappoint Don. If that Is what lie thinks of ner, she will play that kind of a game. She tries to act carefree, but admits to Stephen that she loves her husband. Stephen, no longer interests her. She calls Don on the telephone. Sonia tries to straighten things out with Don, but he refuses to listen to her, so she calls on Bob Wallace. Elaine cnoears on tho scene, and to save Sonia Bob Wallace tells her about Jinny. Elaine meets Jinny. She tell Elaine she and Bob were merely flirting. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY CHAPTER XXXII Elaine hesitated. “I suppose you’re not Just saying that?” “No reason why I should.” Jinny’s head was high. Eyes flashing. “And now will you please take

your husband home? You needn’t worry. I’ll not bother him.” Elaine said, coldly, “Is it necessary to be insulting about it? lam Bob’s wife. I have a right to know.” “Be that as it may," Jinny insisted, wearily, “you’ve gotten your information ...” Bob took his wife’s arm. “Jinny is right,” he said, smoothly, “No use hashing it over. Although I hope there won’t be any hard feelings.” Jinny looked at him scornfully. “My opinion worries you a lot, doesn’t it, Bob?” His hazel eyes were veiled with caution. “Naturally! I like you, Jinny. Always have. But when it comes to an issue between you and my home .” His hanfl slipped down Elaine’s arm. “Surely you understand? ’ - “Oh, purely,” she repeated, bitterly. . When the door had closed her voice shot up like a sky rocket. “Don’t speak to me. Don’t say one word!” “All right, old thing.” “If you DARE tell me this is what you expected I’ll 4° something desperate.”
“Don’t, threaten ME,” Sonia anserecT. “You seem to have forgotten that I’ve been involved in this almost as much us you have. And through no fault of my own.” Jinny’s expression changed. She dropped on the floor and put her head in Sonia’s lap. “I know it. I didn’t realize what I was saying. I’m so hurt, Sonia, I’m KILLED.” Sonia said nothing but tears were in her eyes. * “I suppose I do deserve it," sobbed Jinny. “I should have known I couldn’t play with another woman’s husband and not get burned. But why should I do ALL the suffering?” “You’re not.”~ “Well, I just am. What does Bob care so long as he can keep his pretty mama? Oh, I hate her! She might as well have slapped me in the face.” “Just a minute, darling! Supposing he were YOUR husband?” “I wouldn't want him if he didn’t love me.” . “But that’s it. Jinny. She doesn’t know whether he loves her or not. She'll never know. She suspects him, hut you saw how he acted when it came to a question of losing her?” “Yes, I saw. The cad —the coward!” Her face whitened. “Oh, Sonia, I loved him. I love him yet. But when I remember pow lie looked at her I think I'll go mad. Honestly, I'm afraid I'll do something terrible.” Sonia was faint with sympathy, but she replied, sensibly, “No, you won't. You’ve been a ''good sport. Don’t spoil it. Believe me, darling, you WILL get over it.” “I'll never get over it as long as I live. If I DO live . . she added darkly.
Sonia ignored her ravings. She was sorry for the “poor darling,” but she thought, everything considered, Jinny really should be a better loser. She hadeadmitted that she had gone into it with her eyes open. Realizing Bob was married . . . For one moment Sonia’had caught a glimpse of the price Elaine paid for her position as mistress of Robert Wallace's home. The doubts, the premonitions, the agonized hours she spent alone. After all. she did have her side of it. As for Bob! Sonia shrugged. Useless to try to fathom the mental processes of a male flirt! It was late when they retired. Jinny had cried so hard she caught her breath with little convulsive gasps even after she was sleeping. Fearing she would lie awake Sonia hrd persuaded her to take an aspirin tablet and try Don's prescription of bot milk. It seemed successful, for she was asleep before Sonia bad closed her eyes. What a day it had been! She had forced herself to go to Bob's office hoping to effect a reconciliation with her husband. Instead of which she had been one of the principals in a scene with Elaine. In the evening she had played a minor part in the same drama. And she was exhausted and disheartened. Apparently as for from making peace with Don as before. She wondered if Bob would explain to him. As she lay worrying and rehearsI ing the d.%y’s events, the telephone rang. Her heart was in her throat ■as she ran to answer. It could only jhe Don! Bob bad told him . . . I Her joy changed to fear as the ! operator Informed her that AshtaI Lula was calling. Vera's voice came to her, faintly. “Sonia, come home as soon as pos- , sible. Mother is awfully ill.” The connection wa3 so poor she | could scarcely’ hear, but she under* j stood that Vera asked her to bring l Don. t Sonia’s voice was choked with rear. She wondered how long Anna | had concealed her real condition. i Frantically, she replaced the reIpfuvev and took it down again to £cail ibon’s number, longing for the reltgr of sharing her worry with him. But he did not answer. She tfied the hospital. They suggested that she call the registry’, where she was informed that Dr. Stillwater had been called to Elyria

and would return tomorrow. Sonia left'her message. Ask him to come immediately to Ashtabula. It was Mrs. Stillwater calling—her mother was 111—he would understand. Even calling herself his wife over the telephone comforted her a little. But her heart was contracted wlUj fright. How soon would he be able to leave for Ashtabula? he be too late? She found she could not possibly go before morning. She packed her bag, moving carefully, so as not to awaken Jinny’, then, returning to bed, lay awake the remainder of the night. She was reluctant to leave her friend now when Jinny needed her so badly. Her overstrung nerves might lead her to do something foolish. Every day the papers recorded the suicide of some girl who had not been able to face life without love. Sonia reflected that few men committed suicide for that reason. They were more apt to break over the loss of money or threatened disgrace. Seldom was one sufficiently overwrought to die for the girl he loved unless he carried her with him . . . “But, then, love is so much more necessary,” thought Sonia, “to the female of the species.” Perhaps it had to be to carry out the propagation of the race. No man could endure the agony of childbearing. Much less enter it deliberately as many women did. These and many other thoughts floated through her mind as she waited for the dawn. Thoughts of her mother. Her unfailing patience and the devotion which burned like sacrificial fire in her unhappy eyes. She loved Sonia better than her own daughter. Only Sonia knew the truth of that strange life. Knew that the reason Anna Marsh could spend her life sewing on other women’s dresses was because she carried a flaming secret love buried In her heart. “After reading a- good many testimonials from different people who have been benefited by using Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. I may also say that I used it with benefit. I tried a good many tonics before being advised to take the ‘Golden Medical Discovery’ and I am glad to say that; I am surprised at the results. It has helped me beyond my expectations. I most heartily recommend it to others as I am absolutely certain it will do for them what it has done for me.”—Albert E. Goslin, 1623 So. Ist St., Elwood, Ind.
