JAPANESE ADOPT ' SPORTING IMEg, WARD CRUSE Better Relations Between Races Exists Now in Manchuria. ,/! i/ Times Svrcial NEW YORK. Jan. 31.—A sportattitude, adopted by the Japanese residents of Manchuria toward Chinese living there, is responsible for a distinct improvement in feeling between the two peoples in that section, in the opinion of E. Carlton Baker, personal representative of Chang Tso-lin, “war lord” of Mukden and strong man of North Clilna. While the conflicting forces of bolshevism and conservatism come closer each day to open warfare in North and South China. Baker, a former American consular official in the Far East, has chosen to take a six months rest near the busy hum of New York life. Seen at his office near the Broadway theatrical district this man who has been close to Chang during many of the crises which have endangered the life of the “war lord” sought to steer the conversation away from the discussion of American; British and Japanese action to '- protect foreigners iP Harikow, South China, 110 did not care to predict the outcome of hostilities in China except to suggest that things always moved slojvfy in that section of the world in the. past, and to indicate that they might move the same way in the future. He had much to say about improvement of friendship of Chinese and Japanese in Manchuria, a section where Chinese and Japanese business men predominate and one which has often been the battleground of Russian, Chinese and Japanese armed forces. “You might even put what T say on the sporting page.” said Baker. “For it is about sport that 1 wish to talk, and in particular the sporting proolivities of the Japanese. “You might have noticed a decided change in policy in the last few years among the Japanese in official positions in Manchuria. They treat, other foreigners in a much more sporting manner. Many men familiar with conditions think it is because the civil party in Japanese politics has begun to be powerful, and has overridden old Japanese militaristic ideas.” But this adviser of Chang Tso-lin believes that the change is due purely to development of a sportsmanlike spirit by the Japanese. “There is not a day in Manchu ia when the Japanese are not engaged in some sort of athletic contest, and often foreigners are there competitors,” he said. “This lias developed a sporting spirit. In 1 winter there are ice hockey skating and in the summer ming, tennis, baseball and track events. And their rivals always look upon the Japanese as good sports.” Baker has been in the Far East ”0 years, having held consular posts in Mukden, Amoy, Antungr, Chungking. Foochow and in Nagasaki. Japan before accepting the present post with Chang. One of his most recent experiences with armed hands came when ho was on a visit to the International Banking Corporation’s branch office in Harbin. While ho was talking to the manager of the bank an under official rushed in asking for a revolver. “The Hunghutbas will attack us within an hour,” the excited bankofficial said. The Russian “red beards”, which their name means in English, did not attack when they learned that the Americans had rallied a supporting force about the bank. But, says the warlord's adviser, Americans in that section of , the world have come to regard raids civil wars and the like as very much a part of their daily life.

TEACH SELLING OF WALLPAPER Manufacturers Give ing Course. It</ United Press NEW YORK, Jan. 31.—A training course in wallpaper salesmanship has been established by a New York concern to provide a sufficient force to handle its steadily increasing trade, according to announcement of the Wallpaper Manufacturers’ Association today. Retailers of wallpaper in all important cities of the United States report the biggest fail sales in the history of the business, the association declared. A system of deferred appointments to save customers long periods of waiting has been established by the store which is training new salesmen. Wallpaper of Colonial design, many of them reproductions of patterns fbund in old New England homesteads are extremely popular now, the organization stated. - “The excessive demand for definitely patterned papers is undoubtedly based upon a public reaction against the plain and indefinite colors so popular a few seasons back,’’ the announcement said.
