HOWTO OVERCOME ► TEMPTATION IS TOLD IN BIBLE Dr. Gilroy Declares That Temptation Is Real Enough. The International Uniform Sunday School Lesson for Jan. 30. “How to overcome Temptation.” Luke 4:113; 1 Cor. 10:12, 13. Hy William E. Gilroy, U. D„ Editor The Congregationalist Concerning the speculative details of this lesson we need waste no time. I'hose who are interested in matters of obscurity and controversy no doubt will question just how Jesus was led into the wilderness to be empted, and the part the temptation played in the plans and purposes of God. People of this type have spent a great deal of time questioning and discussing the passage in the Lord's prayer, "Lead us not into temptation.” But people of plain practical mind, for whom we are writing, whose deep interest in the study of Scripture is not in speculation, but in the discovery and appreciation of truth that will help them to strengthen their characters and live better lives, will be unduly concerned about the Speculative aspects of temptation either as it applies to ourselves or as it was experienced by Jesus. Temptation is real enough for us all; it assails us in the most unexpected times, places and ways, and it is a profound comfort and satisfaction to know that temptation in itself is not a mark of sin, that saints and prophets have known its meaning and its fierceness, and that the Son of God himself in his human life was tempted like as we are. Danger in High Calling Perhaps it may help us realize that the temptation of Jesus was incidental to His mission. Every high and holy calling has its inherent difficulties and dangers. The consciousness that made Jesus a world savior made possible in Him the lure of worldly ambition, the temptation to become a master of the kingdoms of the world rather than the Lord of the kingdom of spiritual life. Moreover, the temptations that assailed Jesus are the temptations that come to strong and able men, the temptations to substitute personal will for God’s will, and to make one’s own ambitions, plans and purposes the goal of life instead of the kingdom of God and His righteousness. The tragedies of life are not found entirely among the weak, incompetent and inexperienced; it would be found rather that the worst tragedies of life have been in the downfall of great men and in the misdirection of their lives and energies. . Saul, called to a kingdom under conditions of opportunity, wastes his power in ignoble jealousy and vain ambition. Napoleon, with the mastery of empire in his blood, yields to the things that Jesus renounced only to find himself not given the kingdoms of the world but a broken exile on a narrow island prison. Triumph of Jesus The way to overcome temptation is clearly revealed to us in the triumph of Jesus. One may dwell upon the details of that conquest, the faith of Jesus in the Scriptures, the wisdom of his religious outlook, the power of seeing clearly the nature of the temporary allurement of selfishness. But the fact is that all these are lost in consideration of the one great power that enables Jesus to conquer in the midst of temptation. There is no power that can guarantee our victory over temptation but that power of self-mastery through self-surrender to God —the self-surrender that makes it possible for God to reveal his power in our weakness. It is a happy and wise thought that links Paul's words concerning temptation with the account of the temptation of Jesus. With Paul's clear warning against having a false confidence in one’s strength, he indicates the sure way in which the soul may find entrenchment. If we had to fight in our own power there would be much excuse for our failure, but we should ever remember that God is the friend of fefhe tempted and tried. His power Rxists to save us from sin and upbuild our lives in righteousness and truth. PASS EMPLOYMENT BILL House Bill 68, providing for the licensing and regulation of the em•iloyment agencies of the State, which was introduced by Representative H. W. De Havens of Marion 'ounty, was passed Friday in the In(liana House of Representatives. It received the support of the State industrial board. The measure also prohibits agencies receiving money i'rom clients before employment is secured.

While they were looking o'er the hut, they heard squeals from a nearby rut. It sounded like someone coming so they turned about to see. And then a voice rang loud and clear, “Hello there, Tinies. Have no fear. None is going to hurt you, for you see ’tis only me.” The Tinies strained their eyes and then they found ’twas their old friend again. The furry looking Eskimo had trailed along behind. Said lie, “That house that you have found lias stood upon this lonely ground for many years. I’ve often thought it was a funny kind.” And then he told the Tinymites that many days add many nights ago a man had built the shack and then had gone away. Said he, “I’d use it if I could, but i's all cracked and shy of wood. The wind gets in and thus it is too cold a place to stay.” “Oh, can we have it?” Carpy said. “ ’Cause if we can, we’ll go ahead

and build a dandy little boat to sail down yonder stream. You see, although we’re brave and bold, we’d like to leave ’cause it’s too cold. I think that you’ll agree with me that that’s a dandy scheme.” The Eskimo just laughed real loud and then he turned to all the crowd and shouted, “Go ahead and build the boat you have in mind. But, when you tear this old hut down, and toss the boards upon the ground, be sure that you are wise, and keep whatever nails you find.” The Tinies worked to beat the band and everybody lent a hand. Then Carpy got his hammer out and yanked a lot of nails. They all worked hard and none played. At last the dandy boat was made. Then Scouty eyed it proudly and he said, "I hope it sails.” (Copyright, 1927, NEA Service, Inc.) (The Tinymites sail away in the next story.)

Bu Vnitcd Prc*n WASHINGTON, Jan. 29.—Railroads and steamship companies are not required to cooperate in making joint rates on wool from Pacific coast points to Boston, the Interstate Commerce Commission ruled Friday. Establishment of two routes and joint rates is not shown to be necessary to the public interest, as held by the Boston Wool Trade Association and western shippers, and failure of carriers to establish these rates and routes is not unjust, unreasonable or unlawful, the corhmittee decided.
