WRITERS LACK INTELLIGENCE, STATES AUTHOR Bubbling Over of Enthusiasm and Knowledge Creates Story. By Times Special KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 28. “Writers are not in the least intelligent,’’ in the opinion of Joseph Hergesheimer, one of the most outstanding writers of America. Hergesheimer made this observation in talking with a group of newspapermen here recently while stopping over on his way to California. "Writing,” he continued, "is not the product of deep and serious thought. Writing a story is the bubbling over of the writer’s enthusiasm and knowledge of his subject. Intelligence? Huh, I have a $50 a week secretary who has more real intelligence than I ever had.” 3,000 Words a Day Hergesheimer may lack intelligence in the ordinary sense of the word, but in his powers of observation and knowledge of life and people he reveals a deep understanding. Much of his success in producing 28 novels and more than 500 short stores in eleven years, Hergeshimer believes, is due to his pot having the "disadvantage of an education”. The rest of his success he attributes his long continued habit of writing 3,000 words a day. "No, I don’t throw any of those 3,000 words into the wastebasket,” he replied when asked if he destroyed what he wrote. “I used to throw most of it away, but now I can get rid of it through the editors, who also seem to accredit me with a remarkable degree of intelligence. Broadway for Bums "Don’t go to New York,” said the author in his advice to young writers. "New York is fatal” for the young writer. America lacks provincialism in its literature, and

This popular member of the InWianapolis fire department has a good word for PERUNA. Forced to fight flames in all kinds of weather, Captain Cronley, veteran of 19 years in service, finds PERUNA valuable in fortifying the system against attacks of colds, grippe and catarrh. He writes: “Having heard so much about PERUNA lately. I felt like writing to your firm telling you of the great good PERUNA has done for me. Twelve years ago, I was terribly afflicted with Catarrh of the Head and Nose and also of the Stomach. I was losing weight and realized that something had to be done. Tried several medicines and no relief. Finally a member of the Fire Department .advised me to take PERUNA. Took four bottles and it made anew man of me, It seemed. ILcir blood becomes thin and the nervous system deranged. Food seems to do them no good and there is a con* •iuous increasing weakness—but t only does catarrh of the stomach sc?t up a weakening drain, but it interferes with, sometimes nearly prevents the digestion of food. CROSS RUSSIA IN BOAT Boys Travel by River and Canals, Living in Vessel By United Press MOSCOW, Jan. 28.—Crossing Russia in a boat has just been the unusual adventure of two young Dutch boys one of them the son of a former Cabinet Minister of Holland. Leaving Copenhagen in a small flat-bottomed Dutch boat, the two youths sailed across the Baltic into the Gulf of Finland and reached Leningrad. There they entered Russia’s Intricate system of inlaid waterways and by river and canal traversed the heart of Russia. They have just emerged at Kiev, in the extreme southern part of Russia. The boys lived in their small boat throughout the journey.

In short, producing a condition popularly known as dyspepsia. All over this country are thousands of people suffering from catarrh of the stomach, who are wasting precious time and enduring needless suffering, because of treatment for dyspepsia with pepsin, soda or nervines. PERUNA Restores Strength, Promotes Appetite In catarrh of the stomach, as well as catarrh of any other part of the body, PERUNA is the remedy. Catarrh is catarrh wherever located and the medicine that will help anywhere will help everywhere. People who have been victims of dyspepsia for five, ten and even twenty years, find prompt relief and benefit greatly after a thorough course of treatment. PERUNA has been offered to the public for more than 50 years. It is Dr. Hartman’s own prescription, and is obtainable at all drug stores. Insist on genuine PERUNA and do not accept substitute “tonics.” AT ALL Goldsmith’s DRUG STORES and DEPENDABLE DRUG STORES
