WITCH DEFENSE WINS ACQUITTAL IN MURDER CASE Man Charged With Slaying Woman Employer Blames Hobgoblin. Bu United Press ST. POELTEN, Austria, Jan. 21. —A court has acquitted Johann Lanegger of the murder of his employer, Maria Muehlberger,* upholding his contentloq that a “witch” might have committed the crime. On the night of the murder Lanegger, his body a bruised and bloody mass, staggered into the home of a neighbor and screamed hysterically that a “witch” had beaten him and murdered his mistress. The police, however, gathered evidence to prove that Lanegger knew more about the crime than he cared to tell and they arrested him. At the trial Lanegger admitted that he had an altercation with Frau Muehlberger and that several of his Wounds had been inflicted by the murdered woman and not the ywitch.” He stuck to his story, however, that the “hobgoblin” had entered the house during the quarrel and knocked him unconscious. When ,be awoke, he said, his mistress was dead. ; The court acquitted him, because, •the judge explained, the evidence Indicated that “something or some <©ne” had entered the house unobserved by either of the two combatants and committed the crime. if Silk furnishes the longest continuous fiber known. ’cause he had met the Eskimo and stayed with him all night. "I haven’t had much fun of late,” their-new friend said. “And this is great to meet a bunch of little folks all set to run and play. I'll show you sights you’ll say are real. Perhaps we’ll find a bear or seal, if you will just be patient, ’cause they often come this way.” Some other Eskimos- came out to find out what ’twas all about. They’d heard the high pitched voices of the little Tinymites. Theyall were friendly as could be, and Coppy said,

“It seems to me that we# had best get started, if w’e're going to see the sights.” So, down a long ice path they went. The Eskimo seemed quite intent on soaring forth a polar bear to please his little friends, who gladly joined him on the hunt. Just then they heard a . nearby grunt, and someone loudly shouted, “This is where our journey ends.” In just about a minute more the bear came forth amid a roar. The Eskimo tun up Jo him and stroked his fuzzy head. The Tinies’ eyes were open wide. Such wondrous stunts they’d never tried.* Then, “Who would like to ride this bear?” the fur boy loudly said. “Oh, I would,” came the quick reply. The Tinies all were glad to try, so Mister Polar Bear stood still while one crawled on his back. And then the bear jumped quickly out amid the very happy shout. The
DR. W. B. CALDWELL AT THE ACE Os 0
To Dr. W. B. Caldwell, of Monticello. 111., a practicing physician for 47 years, it seemed cruel that so many constipated men, women, children and particularly old folks, had to be kept constantly "stirred up” and half sick by taking cathartic pills, tablets, salts, calomel and nasty oils. While he knew that constipation was the cause of nearly all headaches, biliousness, indigestion and stomach misery, lie did not believe that a sickening “purge” or “physic” was necessary. In Dr. Caldwell’s Syrup Pepsin lie discovered a laxattive which helps to establish natural bowel ‘ regularity” even for those chronically constipated. Dr. Caldwell's Syrup, Pepsin not only causes a gentle, easy bowel

buried spoils of tho pirate Jean 'Lafitte. The buccaneer is said to have cached vast stores of doubloons and pieces of eight alohg the' great coastal stretch southwest of New Orleans. Reported discovery of a buried treasure near Vermillion Bay a year ago caused considerable excitement. One party of treasure seekers went so far as to pull up a post set by government surveyors, evidently believing that the stake was one of the markings made by Lafitte. It is said that two members of Lafitte’s band once lived in the vicinity of the city of Lake Charles.
