Hie sequel to sonia
BEGIN HERE TODAY SONIA, the young wife of DR. DON STILLWATER, became jealous of her husband when she inadvertently learns that he formerly was engaged to— ELAINE WALLACE, stylish wife of Stillwater's partner. DR. ROBERT WALLACE. Through ESTHER LANE, stenographer in the office, SONIA also learns that Dr. Wallace is somewhat of a flirt, and attracts many or his women patients. dr. Stillwater takes Sonia to a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco for dinner. Later she soliloquizes on the fact he was engaged to another before their marriage. Sonia fears the Wallaces may have head about her illegitimate affair with Franklin Crane, before she was married. Sonia thinks Don is ill, because he is not looking well, and calls on Dr. Wallace for advice. She receives no satisfaction from Wallace, who trios to flirt with her. She runs across Stillwater and Elaine Wallace in a Chinese restaurant and later is filled with conflicting emotions. She meets Jinny of Jed Thomas' office. On the night of their wedding anniversary .Elaine phones, calling Don away as they are about to go out and celebrate. When he returns the evening is spoiled. He brings something from the auto. It proves to be a, present nicked out by Elaine. Later at the Wallaces' Elaine accuses Soma of calling her husband by phone and then deny- , ing it. Sonia fears Don’s love is waning. She visits Uncle Jed in his office. Elaine Wallace calls on Sonia seeking information. Sonia is furious when Don escorts her to her car. She questions Don about the change in hi* attitude. Sonia decides to leave home. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY By Vida Hurst CHAPTER VII Moving as if in a dream, Sonia finished her packing and ciosed her trunk. “I'll send for this later,” she ysaid to Don’s mother, who watched with sorrowful, dlsappoving eyes. “Where are you going, Sonia?” “I'm not sure. Probably to stay with one of the girls from the office.” “Have you plenty of money?” “Plenty,” Sonia replied coldly. “I suppose you realize that you

can’t go on like this forsver. When people are married they can’t leave home just because they're provoked about something.” “I know.” “I think I really ought to call Don. He won’t understand letting you go like this. . . “He will know you couldn't prevent it,” the girl said, unconscious ly arrogant. “Don will be surprised but not any happier than he has been.” She wanted to say more. To fling her arms about his bewildered mother and beg her to forgive her. But she dared not release one tiny lever of her control. Without a glance at the surroundings, which had witnessed all her happiness, she walked out, closing the door quietly. Saying, "Don’t think about anything. Button your glove. There’s a car coming.” * Seated, staring out at the sunny street. ‘Careful, old thing! You’re just going downtown. That’s all.” Going downtown as she had a hundred times before. Same streets, same houses. But changed with sudden, bitter alchemy into the mirage of a dream. She called Jinny from a hotel. “I must see you at noon.” “All right. Anything important?" “Rather,” Sonia answered. Her hands were shaking. “Meet me at Huyler's.” As she hung up she glanced down the row of glass telephone booths. A woman in each. Smiling, anxious, demure or strained! What secrets were flying over the telephone wires? The girl next to her was young and beautiful. Her lips were

puckered in distress! She waited for her number, impatiently. As Sonia opened the door, she heard her cry, eagerly, “Oh, mama, how s the baby? Did you give him his orange juice?” In spite of her sad heart, Sonia smiled. No doubt more than half the calls were of just that variety. It comforted her to think that even if her own house offlfe had crushed about her, other women were planning meals, cooking breakfast food, darning socks. . . . Unromantic but safe in their sane little worlds! Busy with duties for the men and children who gave meaning to the most ordinary lives. She sat in the crowded waiting room, deliberately passing the time until lunch. Thinking, “Well, they played the game better than I. Without thrills, perhaps, but wiser.” For the first time she realized why 'all this blah about conventions.” Giz’ls must be able to go openly to the telephone and ask, “Mama, how's the baby?” Must be able to bear the symbol of their love proudly, not in furtive, secret shame. . . . At that moment, barred from her own paradise, motherhood seemed the only worth while profession in the world. She met Jinny at 1 o’clock. Sonia managed to smile. “It's nothing that matters to anybody but me. I’ve left home and am going to work again.” Jinny’s brown eyes were blank with astonishment. ‘Are you crazy? My dear, only last night you took tne to the Palace. I thought you were wild about each other.”

The old reticence veiled Sonia’t reply. “Please don’t question my reasons for leaving, Jinny. I want to discuss it any more than is absolutely necessary.” “All right, old thing. Only I can’t believe it.” “I know it’s a shock to you. But it is not a sudden decision. The point is may I come and live with you?” “Darling, will you? It will be very different.” Sonia answered bitterly. “The more different it is the better I’ll like it. Besides, I have only a little money. I shall have to live as cheaply as I can. Jinny.” “Do you mean that your husband has let you come away with no money?” “He hadn’t anything to do with It. 1 don’t want Don's money. Wouldn't touch a penny of it.” She left her lunch untasted, and walked with her friend to the real estate office. “I'm going in to see Uncle Jed,” she explained. “He may know of something I can do.” Jinny patted her arm. “Take my key and go out to the apartment whenever you're ready.” Sonia was forced to wait for Mr. Thomas. The half hour seemed endless. When she was admitted to his office she went straight to the point. “Uncle Jed, I have made up my mind to go to work.” ‘‘Now. Sonia, was all that good advice wasted on you?” “No.” she answered, composedly. "But I am not in a-positlon to take it. Don ahd I have separated and I must go to work.” Her voice was so toneless, so emotionlessly final that his expostulalations died on his lips. But she could see that he was tremendously moved. It was some time before he said, cautiously, “I suppose you prefer not to go into details?” “I can’t just now. Perhaps Don will talk to you about it. But I must

go to work as soon as possible. Can you offer any suggestions?” “Do you have any money at all, Sonia?” “I have enough to live on for a while." He was observing his pointed, shining finger nails, matching her In control. “It is too sudden for me to offer any definite suggestion. You*know I will help you if I can.” His tone was lacking in the warm approval to whieh she was accustomed, but she knew she had exhibited all the signs of the type of woman he most disliked. ’’l’ll have to think it over,” he continued. ‘‘Come back about three tomorrow.” “Thank you.” “And, by the way, Sonia,” he added, brusquely, “I’ll consider it a favor if you don't inquire about a position until after you’ve seen me again.”

She went to Jinny’s apartment. It was dark and gloomy. The radiator was cold. There were three chairs, a golden oak table and desk. A curtained alcove contained a few kitchen supplies and a gas plate. In the smaller room were a bed and dresses, hooks along the wall and one window. Sonia made the bed and hung up the clothes, thrown across the chair. She washed the pile of dirty dishes. Evidently Jinny did not share her passion for domesticity. She was only too glad to have something to occupy her hands. By the time Jinny came home the place was tidy but as cheerless as Sonia's heart. They dined out. Returning to a radiator which had begun to fizz. ‘‘That’s the one home-like, num- | her about this place." Jinny confided. “I love to hear the little thing | sputter even if it doesn't mean anything. So cheerful, Sonia! Such a l cute noise!”

Sonia realized that Jinny was doing her best to create an atmosphere of welcome. She shuddered to think what it would mean to face those walls alone. They had purchased magazines, but Sonia had never been much of a reader. She skimmed the pages, looking at the pictures, and ‘ads.” Real life always seemed more interesting to her than fiction. But she could not help thinking what a comfort books would be now to Don. He would use them as he used anes thetics for his patients. To deaden his pain! She pictured him, seated before the cheerful fire, absorbed and interested. He would not even miss her little services while his mother was there. Later if he kept the flat, Tom would look after him. She was interrupted by a sudden, determined knock. Jinny opened the door. (To be Continued).
