HEFLIN OUTBURST JPROVES REED’S CHANCESFORI92B Alabaman’s Flaunting of Religious Issue Held Blow to Al Smith. Times Washington Bureau. IMS Mew York 4 eenuc WASHINGTON, Jan. 19.—National political influence is one thing which the mountainous Tom Heflin of Alabama never was supposed to have, until yesterday. Generally the Alabama Senator is considered here more of a showman than a statesman. But yesterday enthusiastically stalking his stage, he beyond doubt vitally affected the 1928 presidential situation. Probable results of his serial attempt to prove that Knights of Columbus are "leading us to war” are: Candidacy of Governor Al Smith of New York for the Democratic nomination has been set back months, if not forever. Hope of Democratic leaders that religious controversy in the national convention might be alleviated has gone glimmering. Senator Jim Reed of Missouri has stepped out as a compromise candidate. Heflin’s assault will echo down South from cottton field to factory. •\nd“ Heflin will make the most of Lis peculiar prominence. 1 “You have rolled and rumbled,” asserted Senator Reed, "until the

"I can remember nearly 26 years ago when I started to have stomach trouble, and of Course I couldn't begin to tell you all the different things I have taken for relief, but 1 will eay that Konjola finally seemed to completely end all the miseries I had. "I had suffered with cramps and terrible bloating spells. Every bite of food I ate would hurt me. It would sour and ferment, causing the gas to circulate around my heart and make it beat so fast I often thought the end had come. I would get so short of breath, and have terrible dizzy spells, and feel light headed. Spots would seem to jump in front of my eyes. The most agonizing thing about my trouble was the headaches I would suffer. These came over me every day. and my head would feel like it was going to burst. My kidneys were affected also, and I was subject to rising several times a night, and nearly always had rains in m.v back. ”1 was suffering dreadfully with . all these miseries at the time I degelded to try Konjola. In less than a week X felt a big difference, and tto I said. I took four bottles last spring and here it is winter, but I have never been troubled since I took the now medicine. My digestion is good, and all the cramps, dizzy spells and cither miseries are gone. I am free of headaches entirely, which I want to tell you is the greatest blessing I received from Konjola. My kidneys are not bothering me any more, and I am relieved of the pains in my back. My whole system is benefited, and the past 7 or 8 months is the first time In over ten years that I don’t h to take laxatives for constipation. I tell you, Konjola helped me in so many ways that I could almost write a book about it. I have recommended this medicine to a great many people, and they all think it is wonderful too.” The Konjola man is at Hook’s Drug Store, Pennsylvania and Market Sts., Indianapolis, where he is daily meeting the local public and Introducing and explaining the merits of this remedy. versy relating to religion;” that no one ought to appeal to prejudice against Catholics: that Catholics and Protestants, Jews and Gentiles died together on every American battlefield. The speech was labored and far from Reed's best, but it placed him dramatically in the position of the wet-Protestant Democrat who might catch Al Smith’s presidential hopes should they fall. Reed’s political strength has been growing constantly during the past year. He has held the headlines more than any other man in Congress. Heflin jibed Reed pointedly: "Why am I attacked herd? Is it because I of presidential ambitions?” It was impossible for Democratic leaders to stop the surging Senator. Longer and longer grew their I faces as he proceeded. The debate, j bitterest of its kind ever staged in I the memory of present members, ! ended only when the Senate went | into executive session to consider | the Lausanne treaty, j As usual, the Republicans sat tight J while the Democrats broke bones and pummeled heads, a time-hon-ored strategy. The melee was not without its lighter aspects, as when Heflin, in x sweeping oratorical gesture, landed a heavy fist against the left eye of Senator Mayfield of Texas, an earnest listener, and at the same knocked over a stack of books. One attitude Governor Smith may adopt toward the prejudices reI wakened by Heflin's speech was indicated indirectly by -Senator David j Walsh of Massachusetts. l Replying to Heflin, Walsh def clared: ”1 am a Roman Catholic and t am against intervention in Mexico, r do not turn to the leaders of my church to find out where I should stand upon the question.” Smith in the past has been able to show a record of complete freedom i from the Catholic church politically. I However, the view in Washington, j since yesterday afternoon’s bitter I debate, is that many Democratic I leaders, personally favorable to 1 Smith, will now withhold support of : his candidacy.
