PERFUME EXPERT KNOWS BY NOSE Sweet Smells Are Both Art and Religion to Arab Real Sheiks and Shebas His Patrons.

/!(/ XEA Brrrirtr NEW YORK, Jan. 14.—Structural ly, the American nose Is adequate. Between the too ambitious beak and the too passive retrousse, a goodly number of our citizens achieve comely probosces. But. according to Haouanl HadOha, we are content to let our nose contribute only to the glory of our profile and relieve It of its honest obligation—smelling. Haddad, himself, a most likable Arab, who could easily be mistaken for a visiting Shrlnner in his red fez and magenta coat aa he mingles with the Occidents at the Astor Hotel, has trained his nose to be more than a mere feature of facial architecture. He has a nose that works. He is as sensitive to nuances of scent as r radio Is to wave lengths. He knows all the majors, minors, accidentals and diminished sevenths of any given odor. Big Fish at Home Back in Tunis, his home town on the African side of the Mediterranean, Haddad is an Important man Indeed. He It is who creates those subtle, languishing, Ineffable perfumes of Araby with which the she-

baa of the orient reduce their sheiks to pliability. A woman may go forth In Tunis veiled to her eyebrows, but let Haddad get one sniff of perfume from her flowing robes, and he knows in an instant to what harem she belongs. Mimosa Anthrosia? —then she Is from the harem of the Bey of Tunis himself. Haddad has a nose that doesn’t forget. Once he has brewed and distilled an odor he remembers it forecer. And he has catalogued In his nose the specially blended perfume of every harem In Tunis and Tripoli. Art and Religion But the manufacture of perfume Is not a mere commercial enterprise with him. It is a part of his religion as well as his art. “The Afaba are the oldest users of perfume," he told me. “They have made It a part of thlr prayer ritual to anoint the palms with fragrant oils before turning their faces eastward. Perfume Is not a luxury In the orient. It Is vital, like food. “The Arab host provides perfume for his guest chamber just as he does a bed to lie on. \ "After a meal with the coffee and sweets comes rose or Jasmine water

for the hands. For a headache, a medicinal perfume will be as helpful as an aspirin tablet. A thumping heart can be calified down with another medicinal perfume." Haddad's creations, however, cannot be redistilled and used as a base for cocktails, for they are pure oil without alcohol. It Is contrary to the Mohammedan’s religion to use alcohol for commercial purposes. This limits the perfumes' use, to be sqre. His distinguished and discriminating clientele In Tunis Is very exacting for, being orientals, they have trained noses as well as he. One of the leading citizens, who orders large quantities of perfume for his abundant harem, orders a blend which Is thq composite bouquet of a thousand flowers. And If one obscure desert flower were omitted, his sensitive nose would register the omission. Hikes Amber, Rosea For his own use, Haddad likes a combination of musk, amber, Jasmine and roses. “A woman," he maintains, "needs perfume as much as she needs beauty. She should always suggest some fragrance which Is individually hers. But she oan rarely be trusted to choose tills for herself. The man who adores her is the one who should translate her fiersonallty Into flowers.” But when there Is no adorer handy? In that case, she consults Haddad. SHUN ‘AMERICANISMS’ I Bobbed IlaJr and Short Skirts Rare With Filipino Girls Bu United Prttt MANILA. Jan. 14.—Filipino women refuse to become “Americanized.” Unlike their male contemporaries who are rapidly absorbing the modes the younger generation of Filipino and habits of American residents, girds Is conservative as the mothers. With few exceptions they hav<t spurned bobbed hair and knee-length dresses. At all dances, parties and receptions given by students and young people’s societies there are almost as many mothers as dancers.
