"We were on onr marks Thursday to tell you the name of the 1927 State high school champion-to-be when we met with an unexpected delay. We had it all fig ired out in a compresensive manner when a telegraph boy arrived with a message from A. L. Trester inviting us to meet him at the Claypool hotel, 11 a. m., at which time lie doled out some very valuable in-
formation. After we attended the session and received from Trester the bulletin In which the new arrangement of sixteen rcgionals was laid out, scanned closely the assignment of teams and the rocky road our choice would have to travel to got the laurels we know they will win, it struck us that we had better take another week to figure tlio tiling out. Next Friday will be the day. The Times poiited out several weeks ago that the State high school Board of Control seriously was considering changing the regional plan of eight tourneys to one of sixteen with a winner emerging from each. The Times was correct and the Board of Control has reached its decision and made it sixteen. That ellminlnatea. the weak title contender from the State final tourney and puts the strongest teams from the sixteen different corners of the State right Into the tourney. One thing was missing in that bulletin. Admission fees to the sectional and regional tournaments were announced, but it was stated the price for the final tourney will be announced as soon as complete information Is secured about tourney expenditures. The seats were owned and stored away by the association which removes that unknown Item of expense. The expense of bringing the teams to the meet will be approximately the same as last year and although the association gives the assurance that the prices will be about the same as 1926 there are those who believe the board Is working out anew system of admission. Anyway we will predict at this time that at least part of seats at the tournament will be reserved. The Franklin-Notre Dame game at Franklin tonight is attracting no little attention from local fans. The distance Is not so great that It will take a long time to get there and we understand a number of Indianapolis folk will be down there to witness the battle. We hope you won’t be

surprised If we tell you wo select Franklin to win. Butler will meet Michigan State at the Armory tonight. It Is just about time for the Bulldogs to snap out of that slump and show some real basketball. Butler nosed out Marquette last Monday after Marquette had dropped an overtime struggle to Michigan State at East Lansing. Michigan Stale formerly was known as the Michigan Aggies. “Ben from Shiloh,” a gentleman with a very unusual sense of humor, came dashing under the casket today to score a dozen “fool” goals. He hails from way up there In northern “Indlany.” At any rate, ''his suggestion in regard to the press box Is mighty fine. We agree one and all. Our visitor’s letter: Dear Off the Backboard; I notice you have been too busy to draw up a “platform” for your column this year, and knowing that no column ever can be a success without a ‘‘platform.” I have tie cided to lend a helping hand. Here's how: 1. Do away with the national tournament at Chicago and transfer the title to the winner at the cow ham fiesta. Or. diaregttrd the Chicago meet anil concede the national championship to the Indiana champ. Or. enter all 720 Indiana teams in the national meet. Or. just try to get permission for even one to enter. 2 Hire the Boston Symphony. Sousa's Band. Paul Whiteman's aggregation and a saxophone sextet to provide entertainment during the State finals, so the Hoosiers won't go to sleep in the last half with the score tied and thirty seconds to go. 8. Allow no games before or after the tournaments in March. This will give all teams an even chance to cop the title and save money for the poor downtrodden parents who have to buy tickets so the kids and grandpa can see all the home games. 4 Provide mahogany desks, overstulfed chairs stenographers and steam heat for the press box workers. Any scrivener can work with greater zest if there is nothing to do. And that is approximately that. , PJ ~l “ ® Wf 9 r - have you noticed our has ketball teami' You haven't been giving us any publicity. Os course, we haven't won any of our fourteen games yet, but we expect to improve, and you if find us at the cow barn when the title is awarded. Until then— BEN FROM SHILOH. Michigan and lowa, both undefeated aspirants for the Big Ten basketball championship, dedicate lowa's new field house tonight in a contest that is expected to have all the thrills of a championship contest. The winner of the game will rank with Indiana as favorite for the Conference laurels. lowa Is our choice.
