Through ESTHER LANE. stenographer in the office. Sonia also learns that Dr. Wallace is somewhat of a flirt, and attracts many of his women patients. Dr. Stillwater takes Sonia to a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco for dinner. Later she soliloquizes on the fact he was engaged to another before their marriage. Sonia fears the Wallaces may have heard about her affair with Franklin Crane before she was married. Sonia thinks Don is ill, because he. is not looking well, and calls on Dr. Wallace for advice. She receives no satisfaction from Wallace, who tries to flirt with her. She runs across Stillwater and Elaine Wallace in a Chinese restaurant and later is filled with conflicting emotions. She meets Jinny of Jed Thomas' office. On the night of their wedding anniversary. Elaine phones, calling Don away as they are about to go out and celebrate. When he returns the evening is spoiled. He brings something from the auto. It proves to be a present picked out by Elaine. Later at the Wallaces. Elaine accuses Sonia of calling her husband by phone and then denying it. Sonia receives a letter from Franklin Crane, an old sweetheart, saying he's coming to San Francisco. NOW GO ON WITH THE STORY By Vida Hurst CHAPTER XI Next morning Sonia decided to call Jinny. She asked her to come for lunch at a quiet little tea room. “So we can talk,” explained Sonia. Jinny’s warm acceptance gladdened her heart. It was nice to have somebody In a suddenly cold world appreciate her invitation. She dressed carefully, conscious that the other girl would miss no detail of her appearance. She added more rouge. "I mustn’t look unhappy.” It made her remember those days a year ago when she had applied all her knowledge to inake-up to conceal the ravages of her despair. The remembrance sickened her. Trivial details tightened into chains forcing her back into the past. from breath-taking memories. Inanimate objects stared at her and whispered, “Do you remember the day you first wore me?” Yet there was no Joy In those reflections. Only paJn and a realization of her own perfidy. Jinny was demurely provocative in a red hat. "This was a great idea, old thing. I am feeling low today. Need the stimulation of your presence.” ”1 didn't suppose you ever got that way,” smiled Sonia, leading the way to a secluded table. “No? Listen, lady, there's few that don’t. Some of us are better at concealing it than others. That’s all.” “I believe you're right.” “Also you,” continued Jinny, waving her hand. “Wife of a charming doctor, petted, protected, loved. . . . What the devil you’d have to be blue about one cannot Imagine.” "Even doctors’ wives have their troubles, you know.” ”1 don’t doubt it. The dress that was promised sure this afternoon Is not sent out. Or the laundry is short a couple of collars jund a* pillowslip. . . Sonia gave her order and smiled. "You know a lot about it, don’t you?” “I do. More perhaps that you realize.” Funny, Jinny trying as always to rouse suspicion as to her hectic past. But Sonia refused to bite. “What’s doing at the real estate office? Any scandal? You girls seemed soaked in mystery the other day.” "We were. Mystery of whether or not the new salesman is married. He is 23 —a sweet, young thing. So impervious to Violet's stalking that we decided he’s either a bridegroom or about to acquire the sacred title." “That's good. Who is he?” “Name of Sessenger. Steve for short. By the way, Sonia, who was the gorgeous lady with you that day?” Sonia told her, adding, “rretty, isn’t she?" j “Is she?” countered Jinny. "Not to my taste. Too hard. Little, beady, black eyes like a serpent’s.” Suddenly Sonia knew that this was true. Queer that she had not noticed it before. There was something “snaky” about Elaine. Something which repelled yet fascinated. “Funny you should see'that,” she said, with anew respect for the other’s opinion. “I knew the type.” snorted Jinny. “Sorry if she’s a friend of yours.” “As to that,’ admitted Sonia, ruefully. ‘l’m not at all sure. She and Dr. Wallace are old friends of my husband’s. But I don’t think Elaine cherishes me.” “Her hard luck, dearie. Here’s our food. Let’s eat. I can only take an hour.” , Sonia thought ten minutes would have sufficed for the chocolate milk shake which was the extent of Jinny's order. “How do you live? On milk shakes and love?” "Just about and precious little of the latter.” Jinny’s face was sad, her brown eyes shadowed with fatigue. In spite of her familiarity with Jinny’s methods, Sonia felt the old curiosity. “You do look tired,” she sympathized. “Tired doesn't describe it. I’m dead.” “Why not take a night off?” "Oh, it isn’t my social engagements. Asa matter of fact I’ve been sticking too close. I have an apartment of my own now.” “How can you afford it?” asked Sonia, frankly. "I can’t although it’s only two rooms. I’d prefer sharing it but the girls at the office are such clinging vines. They'd drive me crazy.” Again Sonia agreed. She was surprised to find how many opinions they seemed to have in common. “I've only had it for a month,” confided Jinny, Her eyes clouded with tears. Sonia was amazed to see her put her handkerchief to them. “Don’t mind me, old thing. I'm on the ragged edge.” “If you're that nervous you really ought to see a doctor.” "See a doctor indeed!” blurted Jinny. “Listen, you’ve been around. And you’re as silent as the grave. I'm going to tell you something.” If the Sphinx itself had offered to “come across” Sonia could not have been more dumfounded. "Don’t tell anything you’ll be sorry for,” she warned. “Oh, I must talk. I’ve stood It as long as I can. Sonia, for the fl*-st time in my life I am In love.” Sonia patted the little, brown hand which lay upon the table. It looked so competent yet it was so incapable of warding off disaster. The tragedy of her own life was In her voice as she replied. "I’m sorry. If you mean that it is making you unhappy—” “Unhappy?” repeated Jinny, dramatically. “I’m about to pass out." In spite of her sympathy, Sonia smiled. “Do you want to tell me about It? Maybe I can help.” “Nobody can do that, I’m afraid. But it will be a relief to talk if you don’t mind. You see, Sonia, he’s married. , . “Oh, of course/’ thought Sonia. She might have known that. “I know,” continued the other, “that you will think me an awful fool.” "Don't worry about what I think. I do not pretend to Judge anybody.” “But I remember your disapproval of Maxine’s affair with Mac.” “Yes, I did,” Sonia admitted. “A girl is getting into endless difficul ties when she permits herself to care for another woman’s husband.” "But Sonia* they do it every day. Hundreds of men aren't faithful, because they’ro bored, tired, or not in love ” “I know. But men are perverse creatures, Jinny. They crave free dom, but they love their homes. A few succeed in hanging on to both. But the majority, after a few wild dashes after adventure, return' to the good old fireplace. Being a husband is a more comfortable role to play than that gs lover. No man ilkes to have cold chills eternally chasing up and down his back>one. . . . They aren't like we ire. They want to settle down.’’ “That’s a cheerful little thought,
and a lot of comfort in my present condition.” "I'm talking straight from the shoulder, old thing. I know the hell Moxino endured. Not from a moral standpoint, but Just being sensible. . . .’’ “People in love aren’t,” Jinny objected, Irritably. “Oh, I know. Don’t you think I’ve been through that? And I am not offering advice. If you are already Into it. Only for your own sake, I hope you aren’t in too deep.” "I can hear you, but your words don’t mean anything.” The bitterness in her voice touched Sonia. She had forgotten her own troubles in listening to Jinny's. Perhaps she might be able to help her. She could at least stand by. She knew what companionship or the lack of it could mean. "At any rate I’m for you,” she said. “You are one person I’ve always sworn would not lose her head.” “Don't be too sure of that. Although to tell the truth, Sonia, things haven’t gone very far.” “I'm glad.” “But never in my life have I been so crazy over anyone. He's so different from the other men I have ■known. , . “The old story,” thought Sonia. “So handsome. His mouth, his eyes. . . Sonia had feeling vision of Franklin Crane. “Darling, I know. When he kisses you nothing else in the world matters. . . “Nothing,” declared Jinny, vehemently. “I met him at a party with some other people. 1 knew he was married. He made no attempt to deceive me. I flirted with him, deliberately, with my eyes open. I’ve played that game so many times. I thought I was so smart. . . . Oh. well,” she wailed, "it proves that everybody meets his Waterloo some time.” “Do you see him? Do you go out together? “Never go anywhere. I go to his office and lately since I have the apartments he stops sometimes." I "But what is the Idea? Is he in love with you?” “I can’t tell. Sometimes I think Asthma. Made His Life a Burden Found Way to Conquer Trouble Has Been Well Ever Since Sufferers from asthma and stubborn bronchial coughs will find unusual interest in a letter written by Mr. Jos.
