GILLIOM SCORES SHUMAKER AGAIN Rap at Dry Leader Seen in Enforcement Letter. Another "rap” at Edward S. Shumaker and the Anti-Saloon League was seen In a letter sent to all prosecuting attorneys in the State by Attorney General Arthur L. Gilliom. The letter urged enforcement of the prohibition laws, but pointed out that “This statute must be enforced in accordance with law and facts and not in accordance with the desires of self-imposed meddlers and supervisors, whether they be professedly friendly or unfriendly to this statue.” The letter emphasized that citizens are entitled to protection from unlawful searches and seizures, and that it was up to the prosecutors to see that officers keep within the law Shumaker, Indiana superintendent of the League, has long been nt swords points with Gilliom, who charged him with contempt because of a verbal attack on Supreme Court Judge Julius C. Travis and others on the Supreme Court bench. Commenting upon a recent speech in which Gilliom decried increased force in problhltion enforcement and urged an educatonal program for temperance, Shumaker termed it a "betrayal of his sacred office.” Shumaker will try and get a bill through the present session of the Legislature permitting evidence to be used in liquor cases, regardless of how procured, it is understood.
