ASKS AID FROM GOVERNMENT IN FOREIGN TRAD? Texan’s Plea for Fund Has Special Reference to Other Americas. Times Wash inn ton Bureau, 1X22 New York Avenue WASHINGTON, Jan. 10.—Representative Clay Stone Briggs, member of the House Merchant Martne Committee, today led a-‘Tnovement designed to expand the foreign commerce of the United States, apd especially of the South, by establishing better contacts with South and Central America. Accompanied by several other Texas congressmen, Briggs appeared before the House Appropriations Committee to urge an additional $20,000 for services of traveling trade commissioners. Offer Large Market "Surveys made by the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce disclose that South and Central America offer the greatest promise for the further development of our foreign commerce," Briggs said. "Only (wo of these countries now purchase more products from the United States than they send to this country. The total value of our exports to Latin-American countries in 1925 was $882,300,000, while the aggregate amount of shipments those countries was $1,040,500,000, a balance of trade against the United States of approximately $160,000,000.” Os all these Important LatinAmerican nations, Argentina and Mexico are the only two which buy more goods from the United States than they They are Mexico, where in 1925 the balance of trade was $34,000,000 in favor of the United States, and Argentina, where the balance was $121,000,000 In our favor. Brazil's Advantage Brazil imported but $87,000,000 worth of products in 1925, while at the same time exporting commodities valued at $221,000,000. Exports to the West Indies and Bermuda amounted to $262,200,000, while imports from those nations aggregated $300,300,000. "It is apparent that these South American and other Latin countries offer fertile fields for trade expansion, but if the United States is to obtain its share of these markets it must be increasingly vigilant and assist In every way to bring together American sellers and foreign buyers," Briggs said. Briggs proposes that trade commissioners shall moke frequent trips to South American countries and acquaint American merchants of trade opportunities before European competitors learn of them.
