Death, Birth Rates Lower in 1926 The annual report of the city board of health for 1926 shows 5,308 deaths and 7,100 births. This is a death rate of 13.7 per thousand population and a birth rate of 18.2 per thousand. “The most pleasing announcement in this report,” commented Dr. Herman G. Morgan, head of the board of health, the one pertaining to the death rate among babies under one year of age. Ten years ago the death rate was 139 per thousand. In 1926 that has been reduced to fiftyone per thousand.” According to report, the principal causes of death, due to disease, were diseases of the heart, arteries and tuberculosis. Cows Fail to Diet , Farmer Files Suit Bu Timex Special VINCENNES, Ind., Jan, 7. —Eight cows, owned by Ray Smith, farmer, apparently did not know that the fashion of today is to diet. So when they found a portion of the partition fence between the Smith and Daniel Kaufman farms down, they stepped into the Kaufman cornfield and for seven hours ate green corn. Three of them died and the other five became so ill their value was greatly reduced. Smith, in a damage suit here, asks $450 damages from Kaufman on the grounds he neglected to repair the fence.

The Tinles took their skates in hand and shouted, “Gee, but this Is grand. We surely do appreciate your loaning them to us.” The old man smiled, and then replied, “Just wait until those skates are tried.” And then tne Tinles left him for the pond, ’mid quite a fuss. They climbed up several hills of snow. They’d reach the top, then down they’d go. Whenever they could find a chance, they’d slide Instead of run. Then Scouty shouted, "There's the pond. See that big tree? It’s Just beyond. Come on, let’s hurry, all of us, we’re In for lots of fun.” It wasn’t long ’till they were there. The crispness of the witr.er air made everything seem right In trim for skating on the ice. Wee Carpy was the first to try his luck, and soon he shouted, ”1 have never seen a finer rink. This sure Is mighty nice.” Course Clowny soon began to brag how he could skate. "Say, let’s play tag,” said Scouty, as he slapped someone and shouted, "You are It!” The chase was on and off they went, a-playing tag, and pleasure bent. Across the Ice like Wafts of wind the little band would flit. When of their tag game they grew tired, another hunch was soon lnspised, as Carpy skated backwards, doing tricks and other things. "Oh, say,” they all heard someone call, “Let’s see who is the best of all at skating in a figure eight or making fancy rings.” Then Clowny shouted, ‘‘Just watch me a moment, and you all will see tha neatest little skater who has ever come to town.” He then went whirling ’round the ice, but found his plan was not so nice. The next thing that he knew, he slipped, and soon was sitting down. (The Tinymltes build a bonfire to keep warm in the next story.) (Copyright, 1926, NEA Service, Inc.)
